This open access book, written by world experts in aquaponics and related technologies, provides the authoritative and comprehensive overview of the key aquaculture and hydroponic and other integrated systems, socio-economic and environmental aspects. Aquaponic systems, which combine aquaculture and vegetable food production offer alternative technology solutions for a world that is increasingly under stress through population growth, urbanisation, water shortages, land and soil degradation, environmental pollution, world hunger and climate change.Hydroponics is a method to grow crops without soil, and as such, these systems are added to aquaculture components to create aquaponics systems. Thus, together with the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), hydroponic production forms a key part of the aqua-agricultural system of aquaponics. Many different existing hydroponic technologies can be applied when designing aquaponics systems. This depends on the environmental and financial circumstances, the type of crop that is cultivated and the available space. This chapter provides an overview of different hydroponic types, including substrates, nutrients and nutrient solutions, and disinfection methods of the recirculating nutrient solutions

Analysis of the Potential Revenue of Public Service Retribution for Increasing Regional Original Income (Study of Southern Fabric Folding Traditional Market Services, Kampar Kiri District) By ZEKKI PARMA NPM: 187110545 This research was carried out at the Department of Trade, Cooperatives and UMK Kampar Regency, and Objects of the Traditional Fold of the South Traditional Market, Kampar Kiri District, Kampar Regency. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the Potential of Public Service Retribution Revenue for Increasing Regional Original Income (Study of Traditional Folded Cloth Market Services in South Kampar Kiri District). Data collection techniques that the authors use in this study are observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Then the data analysis technique that the author uses in this study is descriptive qualitative. The key informants in this study consisted of the Head of the Trade and Market Division of Kampar Regency, the Head of the Fold Cloth Village Head, the Chairperson of the South Fold Traditional Market, cleaning staff, market traders, and rent collectors at the southern folding traditional market. Based on the results of research conducted by the author, it can be concluded that: Based on the potential for market acceptance in the Southern Fold Cloth Traditional Market, it shows a very large potential income, seen from the results of calculating market potential in a year. This shows that the potential for receiving market service fees affects the value of market service fees in Kampar Regency. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts by the local government in coordination with the Department of Trade, Cooperatives and UMK to increase receipts of fees which are used as a source of Regional Original Revenue for Kampar Regency

Analisa data menggunakan Preparing and Organizing the data, Reviewing and exploring thedata, Coding and catagories, Construction Description of People, Place, and Activities, Buliding Themes and Testing Hypotheses dan Reporting and Interpreting data.

An adverse role for matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-12 following spinal cord injury in mice

    No full text
We investigated the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in acute spinal cord injury (SCI). Transcripts encoding 22 of the 23 known mammalian MMPs were measured in the mouse spinal cord at various time points after injury. Although there were significant changes in the expression levels of multiple MMPs, MMP-12 was increased 189-fold over normal levels, the highest of all MMPs examined. To evaluate the role of MMP-12 in SCI, spinal cord compression was performed in wild-type (WT) and MMP-12 null mice. Behavioral analyses were conducted for 4 weeks using the Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor rating scale as well as the inclined plane test. The results show that MMP-12 null mice exhibited significantly improved functional recovery compared with WT controls. Twenty-eight days after injury, the BBB score in the MMP-12 group was 7, representing extensive movement of all three hindlimb joints, compared with 4 in the WT group, representing only slight movement of these joints. Furthermore, MMP-12 null mice showed recovery of hindlimb strength more rapidly than control mice, with significantly higher inclined plane scores on days 14 and 21 after SCI. Mechanistically, there was decreased permeability of the blood-spinal barrier and reduced microglial and macrophage density in MMP-12 null mice compared with WT controls. This is the first study to profile the expression patterns of a majority of the known MMPs after spinal cord compression. The data indicate that MMP-12 expression after spinal cord trauma is deleterious and contributes to the development of secondary injury in SCI.</jats:p

Altered innate immune response of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in multiple sclerosis

    No full text
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are of crucial importance in immune regulation and response to microbial factors. In multiple sclerosis (MS), pDCs from peripheral blood showed an immature phenotype, but its role in susceptibility to MS is not determined. Because infectious diseases are established triggers of exacerbations in MS, in this study we have characterized the expression of Toll-like receptors (TLR) and the maturation and functional properties of peripheral blood pDCs from clinically stable, untreated MS patients in response to signals of innate immunity. After stimulation of TLR-9, interferon (IFN)-α production by pDCs was significantly lower in MS (n = 12) compared to healthy controls (n = 9). In an allogenic two-step co-culture assay we found an impaired effect of TLR-9 stimulation on IFN-γ expression of autologous naive T cells in MS patients (n = 4). In peripheral blood mononuclear cells, TLR-9 stimulation with type A CpG ODN resulted in a higher expression of TLR-1, -2, -4, -5 and -8 in MS patients (n = 7) compared with healthy controls (n = 11). These findings suggest an altered innate immune response to microbial stimuli in MS patients and may help understanding of why common infectious agents trigger MS attacks
