    CompILE: Compositional Imitation Learning and Execution

    We introduce Compositional Imitation Learning and Execution (CompILE): a framework for learning reusable, variable-length segments of hierarchically-structured behavior from demonstration data. CompILE uses a novel unsupervised, fully-differentiable sequence segmentation module to learn latent encodings of sequential data that can be re-composed and executed to perform new tasks. Once trained, our model generalizes to sequences of longer length and from environment instances not seen during training. We evaluate CompILE in a challenging 2D multi-task environment and a continuous control task, and show that it can find correct task boundaries and event encodings in an unsupervised manner. Latent codes and associated behavior policies discovered by CompILE can be used by a hierarchical agent, where the high-level policy selects actions in the latent code space, and the low-level, task-specific policies are simply the learned decoders. We found that our CompILE-based agent could learn given only sparse rewards, where agents without task-specific policies struggle.Comment: ICML (2019

    Embodied Education al centro di un nuovo paradigma: un contributo da arte e teatro per un interfaccia multimodale

    The research - Embodied Education through art and theatre – tries to underline the relationship between the artistic and theatrical languages and the neurosciences, in particular starting from the discovery of the MNS Mirror Neuron System (Gallese, Rizzolatti.1996), to offer a contribution for an enactive learning. The Embodied Simulation tells us that at the basis of the understanding of the world there are the representation of the aim and the sensory-motor involvement, motor and intentional basis of learning, that art and theatre express through pre-linguistic instruments: images and actions. In the last years the educational sciences and the cognitive sciences (Fischer, Daniel, Immordino-Yang, Stern, Battro, Koizumi. 2007) have intensified their connections to the point of identifying a unique science MBE, Mind Brain Education science (Tokuhama-Espinoza,2010). This common field concerns the classical themes of learning, memory, attention and language, but also the themes of consciousness and body. The theoretical and empirical research, arisen at the end of the XXth Century, and now developing in cognitive sciences, is causing the change of the research interests from the mind study itself to the study of an ecological mind, of an interdependent mind between body and environment: the focus is the concatenation mind-body-environment, the extended mind.All’interno del paradigma comunemente definito embodied theory l’articolo muove da una ricerca che approfondisce l’apporto dei linguaggi artistico e teatrale dove incontrano le neuroscienze, a partire dalla scoperta dei neuroni mirror (Gallese, Rizzolatti, 1996), quando individuano nell’embodied simulation la base motoria e intenzionale dell’apprendimento.L’Embodied Simulation ci dice che alla base della comprensione del mondoci sono la rappresentazione dello scopo e il coinvolgimento senso-motorio, attivazione e base intenzionale dell’apprendimento, che arte e teatro esprimono attraverso strumenti pre-linguistici: immagini e azioni. Negli ultimi anni le scienze dell’educazione e le scienze cognitive stanno sempre più intensificando i loro rapporti (Fischer, Daniel, Immordino-Yang, Stern, Battro, Koizumi, 2007) fino a parlare di un’unica scienza MBE, Mind Brain Education science (Tokuhama -Espinoza, 2010). Il campo comune riguarda i classici temi dell’apprendimento – memoria, attenzione, linguaggio – ma anche i temi della coscienza e del corpo. A conveniência do acesso à qualquer momento, as simples interfaces e o acesso massivo à internet tornam estas aplicações elementos estratégicos para todos os setores da economia. Há diversos desafios de conhecimento, desenvolvimento, experiência e constante atualização, sendo assim, é hoje uma habilidade fortemente requisitada mundialmente. A educação, por exemplo, está passando por uma revolução nunca antes vista na história: iniciativas para aproximar alunos e seus pais, plataforma adaptativas e sistemas que facilitam o contato professor-aluno são inovações deste meio. O trabalho presente se dá neste exato contexto: melhorar o ensino de uma escola de programação por meio de uma aplicação customizável com tarefas, tutoriais, sistema de avaliação, acompanhamento de desempenho, obtenção de feedback individualizado e rápido, comparação de resultados, tudo feito de forma intuitiva, escalável e segura. Foram então realizados estudos de necessidades da empresa, requisitos do sistema e de tecnologias nos melhores sistemas pelo mundo. Finalmente, uma solução foi construída e será detalhada nos capítulos posteriores.Web applications have become increasingly more important in our lives. The 24/7 access convenience, simple interfaces and massive reach to the internet have been transforming these applications into strategic elements for all economic activities. There are several challenges regarding those systems: development, experience and frequent updates, therefore it has become a very much needed knowledge all over the world. The education sector, for example, has been drastically changed. New ways to increase the engagement between students and their parents, adaptative platforms and systems allowing to decrease the student-teacher communication gap are being developed. This thesis goes on the same direction as these initiatives: enhance a programming school education by developing a customizable web application which provides homework, tutorials and graded exercises following students results, comparing their development, obtaining precise and fast feedback. The platform has to be constructed in a scalable, intuitive and secure way. Hence, several studies were held: company necessities, system requirements and technologies compatibilities. Finally, the system has been built and the information regarding it will be detailed within the next chapters
