The Effect of wake Turbulence Intensity on Transition in a Compressor Cascade

    Get PDF
Direct numerical simulations of separating flow along a section at midspan of a low-pressure V103 compressor cascade with periodically incoming wakes were performed. By varying the strength of the wake, its influence on both boundary layer separation and bypass transition were examined. Due to the presence of small-scale three-dimensional fluctuations in the wakes, the flow along the pressure surface undergoes bypass transition. Only in the weak-wake case, the boundary layer reaches a nearly-separated state between impinging wakes. In all simulations, the flow along the suction surface was found to separate. In the simulation with the strong wakes, separation is intermittently suppressed as the periodically passing wakes managed to trigger turbulent spots upstream of the location of separation. As these turbulent spots convect downstream, they locally suppress separation. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

High performance subgraph mining in molecular compounds

    Get PDF
Structured data represented in the form of graphs arises in several fields of the science and the growing amount of available data makes distributed graph mining techniques particularly relevant. In this paper, we present a distributed approach to the frequent subgraph mining problem to discover interesting patterns in molecular compounds. The problem is characterized by a highly irregular search tree, whereby no reliable workload prediction is available. We describe the three main aspects of the proposed distributed algorithm, namely a dynamic partitioning of the search space, a distribution process based on a peer-to-peer communication framework, and a novel receiver-initiated, load balancing algorithm. The effectiveness of the distributed method has been evaluated on the well-known National Cancer Institute’s HIV-screening dataset, where the approach attains close-to linear speedup in a network of workstations

The chemical effect of ultrasound on cyanide solutions

    Get PDF
An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the chemical effects of high intensity ultrasonic radiation on cyanide solutions. The effects of aeration, concentration of cyanide and temperatures on the reaction rate are investigated. The experiment was preformed in a 30 mm pyrex tube immersed at a fixed height in a constant volume water bath. Ultrasonic energy was applied through the use of a transducer epoxied at the bottom of the water bath. The power inputs to the transducer were 40W (27KHz) and 100W (21KHz). At a power of 40W, ultrasound had no chemical effect on cyanide solutions. At 100W, hydrogen peroxide formed during the process and reacted with the cyanide. The mechanism of reaction is assumed to include both oxidation and hydrolysis of the cyanide in solution. However, the catalytic effect of hydrogen peroxide under these (conditions increased leading to substantial hydrolysis of cyanide. As a result, the overall reaction yield increased by, 200 - 300% over the yield normally obtained from equal amounts of hydrogen per oxide in conventional cyanide - peroxide reactions

The purpose of this research is to examine the production behavior of Muslim restaurant towards the rise of basic commodities’ prices. The method used for the study is qualitative descriptive case study. The data used are primary data and secondary data. Primary data was obtained from the results of interviews, observations and documentation on the parties concerned, while in this study, the secondary data was obtained from printed media, electronic, and internet regarding Islamic production pattern, supporting data from various journals, and books relevant to research. The results of the research showed that the increase in the price of basic commodities had an impact on the behavior of the production of Muslim restaurants in Baureno. The increase in the prices of basic commodities made the restaurant industry doers in Baureno sub-district change the prices and quantity of the menus in their restaurants. Such price increases are apparently still within reasonable limits and in accordance with the principles of Islamic economic production, taking profits fairly and not harming customers. Muslim restaurant manufacturers as a whole have made production in Islamic way.     Keywords: Islamic production behaviour, price increasing in basic commoditie

Emotion Differentiation as a Protective Factor Against Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Borderline Personality Disorder

Evidence that nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) serves a maladaptive emotion regulation function in borderline personality disorder (BPD) has drawn attention to processes that may increase risk for NSSI by exacerbating negative emotion, such as rumination. However, more adaptive forms of emotion processing, including differentiating broad emotional experiences into nuanced emotion categories, might serve as a protective factoragainst NSSI. Using an experience-sampling diary, the present study tested whether differentiation of negative emotion was associated with lower frequency of NSSI acts and urges in 38 individuals with BPD who reported histories of NSSI. Participants completed a dispositional measure of rumination and a 21-day experience-sampling diary, which yielded an index of negative emotion differentiation and frequency of NSSI acts and urges. A significant rumination by negative emotion differentiation interaction revealed that rumination predicted higher rates of NSSI acts and urges in participants with difficulty differentiating their negative emotions. The results extend research on emotion differentiation into the clinical literature and provide empirical support for clinical theories that suggest emotion identification and labeling underlie strategies for adaptive self-regulation and decreased NSSI risk in BPD

Cuff-less continuous blood pressure monitoring system using pulse transit time techniques

    Get PDF
This paper describes the development of a continuous cuff-less blood pressure system based on the pulse transit time (PTT) technique. In this study, PTT is defined by two different approaches denoted as PTT1 and PTT2. PTT1 is the time difference between the R-wave peak of the Electrocardiogram (ECG) and the peak of the Photoplethysmogram (PPG). PTT2 is the time difference between two peak PPG signals on same cardiac cycle at different positions on the body. The ECG is acquired on the chest using 3 lead electrodes and a reflection mode optical sensor is deployed on brachial artery and fingertip to monitor the PPGs. These data were synchronized using a National Instruments data acquisition card along with Matlab software for subsequent analysis. A wrist-type cuff-based blood pressure device was used to measure blood pressure on the right hand. Brachial blood pressure was measured on the upper left arm using oscillometric blood pressure monitor. Experiments were conducted by elevating the right hand at different position to investigate variability of PTT under the effects of hydrostatic pressure. Next the variability of PTT due to blood pressure changes during a Valsalva maneuver was investigated. The result shows that the PTT1 is inversely proportional to blood pressure in both experiments. Meanwhile, there is weak correlation between PTT2 and blood pressure measurement which suggests that by excluding the pre-ejection period (PEP) time in PTT calculation may reduce the accuracy of PTT for blood pressure measurement. In conclusion, PTT measurement between ECG and PPG signals has potential to be a reliable technique for cuff-less blood pressure measurement

STR-817: THE DECK REPLACEMENT OF THE HONORE-MERCIER BRIDGE. AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION USING ACCELERATED BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES

    Get PDF
Today, the Honoré-Mercier Bridge crosses the St. Lawrence River and the seaway on the west side of the Island of Montreal. Named after the Honorable Honoré-Mercier, a former Premier of Quebec, this bridge became the fourth structure to connect the Island of Montreal to the South Shore. The entire steel structure was built by the Dominion Bridge Company Limited as part of work funded by the government to address the economic downturn. The Honoré-Mercier Bridge was inaugurated 10 months earlier than planned on June 22, 1934, and initially belonged to the Corporation du pont du Lac Saint-Louis. It\u27s administration was later transferred to the Government of Quebec in 1942. The bridge was later modified during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway project in 1959, where the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) worked to raise and extend the south section so that ships could pass underneath. To increase capacity, (from two to four lanes), in 1963, construction of the second bridge downstream from the first was completed and the entire bridge was once again managed by the Quebec provincial government. Finally, on October 1, 1998, the 3 approaches from the South Shore, the seaway, as well as, the spans over the Island of Maline, (now referrred to as the Federal section and on Mohawk Territory of Kahnawake), were transferred to the STR-817-2 Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI), while the balance is continued to be managed by the Government of Quebec. Today an estimated 30 million vehicles annually cross the Honoré-Mercier Bridge. In 2008, the JCCBI Corporation launched a major rehabilitation project for the Honoré-Mercier Bridge. A first in this country, this project was composed of a tri-party agreement between the governments of Canada, Quebec, and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake. It will be the largest bridge rehabilitation project ever undertaken in Canada. This project consists of the complete deck replacement of the 92.0 meter seaway span of the Honoré-Mercier Bridge to achieve required strength, safety and durability and to provide a further 50 years of useful service within the highway network system. The existing bridge deck of the seaway span has reached the end of its useful life, as evident by the steel structure showing significant signs of deterioration
