Non supersymmetric strong coupling background from the large N quantum mechanics of two matrices coupled via a Yang-Mills interaction
We derive the planar large N non-supersymmetric background of the quantum
mechanical hamiltonian of two hermitean matrices coupled via a Yang-Mills
interaction, in terms of the density of eigenvalues of one of the matrices.
This background satisfies an implicit non linear integral equation, with a
perturbative small coupling expansion and a solvable large coupling solution,
which is obtained. The energy of system and the expectation value of several
correlators are obtained in this strong coupling limit. They are free of

AGC 226067: A possible interacting low-mass system
We present Arecibo, GBT, VLA and WIYN/pODI observations of the ALFALFA source
AGC 226067. Originally identified as an ultra-compact high velocity cloud and
candidate Local Group galaxy, AGC 226067 is spatially and kinematically
coincident with the Virgo cluster, and the identification by multiple groups of
an optical counterpart with no resolved stars supports the interpretation that
this systems lies at the Virgo distance (D=17 Mpc). The combined observations
reveal that the system consists of multiple components: a central HI source
associated with the optical counterpart (AGC 226067), a smaller HI-only
component (AGC 229490), a second optical component (AGC 229491), and extended
low surface brightness HI. Only ~1/4 of the single-dish HI emission is
associated with AGC 226067; as a result, we find M_HI/L_g ~ 6 Msun/Lsun, which
is lower than previous work. At D=17 Mpc, AGC 226067 has an HI mass of 1.5 x
10^7 Msun and L_g = 2.4 x 10^6 Lsun, AGC 229490 (the HI-only component) has
M_HI = 3.6 x 10^6 Msun, and AGC 229491 (the second optical component) has L_g =
3.6 x 10^5 Lsun. The nature of this system of three sources is uncertain: AGC
226067 and AGC 229490 may be connected by an HI bridge, and AGC 229490 and AGC
229491 are separated by only 0.5'. The current data do not resolve the HI in
AGC 229490 and its origin is unclear. We discuss possible scenarios for this
system of objects: an interacting system of dwarf galaxies, accretion of
material onto AGC 226067, or stripping of material from AGC 226067.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 6 pages, 4 figure
Cancer Patterns in Karachi Division (1998-1999)
Objective: A minimal cancer incidence data for Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, is being presented here, for the years 1998-1999. The city has a population of 9,802,134; males 5,261,712 (52.6%) and females 4,540,422 (47.4%); census 19981.
Methodology: A predominantly mixed (passive and active) registration system has evolved in Karachi, the data sources being the hospitals within the Karachi Division. The reported/retrieved cancer data sets at the Karachi Cancer Registry are checked, coded, computerised in an analytical format and analysed.
Results: The incident cancer cases registered in Karachi, during the 2-year period, 1st January 1998 to 31st December 1999 were analysed. The age-standardised incidence rate (ASR) of cancer, all sites was 132.4/100,000 for the males. Cancer of the lung 10.8%; ASR 17.3 was the most frequently recorded malignancy, followed by oral cavity 10.5%; ASR 13.2 and larynx 5.0%; ASR 7.4. The age-standardised incidence rate (ASR) of cancer, all sites was 133.0/100,000 in the females. Cancer of the breast, 32.0%; ASR 40.7 was the most frequently recorded malignancy, followed by oral cavity 8.1%; ASR 11.7 and gall bladder 3.6%; ASR 5.5.
Conclusion: The present data has been calculated with an estimated 15-20% probable under ascertainment. Tobacco-associated cancers in Karachi were responsible for 38.3% of the tumours diagnosed amongst the males. Two principal cancers, breast and oral cavity were responsible for 40.1% of the cancers in females. A rare finding was the high incidence of gall bladder cancer in the females. At present it is difficult to determine whether this indicates a genuine high risk or a selection bias. A continuous process of cancer registration to study the trends in the incidence and an adequate cancer control program are possible and essential for Pakistan and can be based on the pattern being practiced in Karachi
The VLT/NaCo Large program to probe the occurrence of exoplanets and brown dwarfs in wide orbits: I- Sample definition and characterization
Young, nearby stars are ideal targets to search for planets using the direct
imaging technique. The determination of stellar parameters is crucial for the
interpretation of imaging survey results particularly since the luminosity of
substellar objects has a strong dependence on system age. We have conducted a
large program with NaCo at the VLT in order to search for planets and brown
dwarfs in wide orbits around 86 stars. A large fraction of the targets observed
with NaCo were poorly investigated in the literature. We performed a study to
characterize the fundamental properties (age, distance, mass) of the stars in
our sample. To improve target age determinations, we compiled and analyzed a
complete set of age diagnostics. We measured spectroscopic parameters and age
diagnostics using dedicated observations acquired with FEROS and CORALIE
spectrographs at La Silla Observatory. We also made extensive use of archival
spectroscopic data and results available in the literature. Additionally, we
exploited photometric time-series, available in ASAS and Super-WASP archives,
to derive rotation period for a large fraction of our program stars. We
provided updated characterization of all the targets observed in the VLT NaCo
Large program, a survey designed to probe the occurrence of exoplanets and
brown dwarfs in wide orbits. The median distance and age of our program stars
are 64 pc and 100 Myr, respectively. Nearly all the stars have masses between
0.70 and 1.50sun, with a median value of 1.01 Msun. The typical metallicity is
close to solar, with a dispersion that is smaller than that of samples usually
observed in radial velocity surveys. Several stars are confirmed or proposed
here to be members of nearby young moving groups. Eight spectroscopic binaries

Radionuclides (40K, 232Th and 238U) and Heavy Metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As and Pb) Distribution Assessment at Renggam Landfill, Simpang Renggam, Johor, Malaysia
The assessment of radioactivity levels and the distribution of heavy metals in soil
samples at CEP Farm landfill, Renggam in Johor State was to determine the activity
concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides and heavy metal concentrations of this
landfill. The background radiation was monitored to estimate the exposure level. The activity
concentrations of radionuclides in soil samples were determined using HPGe gamma ray
spectroscopy whereas the heavy metal concentration was measured using X-RF analysis. The
mean exposure rate at the landfill site was 36.2±2.4 μR hr-1 and the annual effective dose rate
at the landfill site was 3.19 ± 0.22 mSv yr-1. However, residential area has lower mean
exposure dose rate of about 16.33±0.72 μR hr-1 and has an annual effective dose rate of
1.43±0.06 mSv yr-1 compared to landfill sites. The mean activity concentration of 40K, 238U
and 232Th at landfill site were 239.95±15.89 Bq kg-1, 20.90±2.49 Bq kg-1 and 40.61±4.59 Bq
kg-1, respectively. For heavy metal compositions, Cr, Ni and Cu have mean concentration of
232±10 ppm, 23±2 ppm, and 46±19 ppm, respectively. Whereas, Zn has concentration of 64±9
ppm and concentration of 12±1 ppm and 71±2 ppm was estimated for As and Pb respectively.
The higher activity concentration of 40K down the slope through leaching process whereas the
higher activity level of 238U content at the landfill site may be attributed to the soil disruption
to local equilibriu
Thinking about Later Life: Insights from the Capability Approach
A major criticism of mainstream gerontological frameworks is the inability of such frameworks to appreciate and incorporate issues of diversity and difference in engaging with experiences of aging. Given the prevailing socially structured nature of inequalities, such differences matter greatly in shaping experiences, as well as social constructions, of aging. I argue that Amartya Sen’s capability approach (2009) potentially offers gerontological scholars a broad conceptual framework that places at its core consideration of human beings (their values) and centrality of human diversity. As well as identifying these key features of the capability approach, I discuss and demonstrate their relevance to thinking about old age and aging. I maintain that in the context of complex and emerging identities in later life that shape and are shaped by shifting people-place and people-people relationships, Sen’s capability approach offers significant possibilities for gerontological research

Impact of buffer charge on the reliability of carbon doped AlGaN/GaN-on-Si HEMTs
Charge trapping and transport in the carbon doped GaN buffer of an AlGaN/GaN-on-Si HEMT have been investigated. Back-gating and dynamic RON experiments show how the onset of leakage in the strain relief layer at a lower field than that through the upper part of the structure can result in serious long-term trapping leading to current collapse under standard device operating conditions. Controlling current-collapse requires control of not only the layer structures and its doping, but also the precise balance of leakage in each layer
Epidemiological analysis of typhoid fever in Kelantan from a retrieved registry
Aim: Despite the endemicity of typhoid in Kelantan, epidemiological data showing typhoid association to age, sex,ethnicity and district of patients is limited. This retrospective study investigated the statistical association of thesevariables from a retrieved registry.Methodology and results: Cross-tabulation using SPSS was used to analyze 1394 cases of confirmed typhoid patientsadmitted to various hospitals in Kelantan state over a six-year period. Fourteen age groups with a five-year rangeinterval were generated. There was a significant association between typhoid infection and sex of subjects, wherebyfemales were generally more susceptible than males. Ethnicity and district of typhoid patients did not show significantassociation.Conclusion, significance and impact of study: The observation of an increased number of typhoid cases with a malepredominance in the age group 5-14 and female predominance in the 20-60 age group calls for improved hygiene,continued public health education, together with better laboratory diagnostics to identify carriers, are some measures tocontrol this disease
