    Restoring Fine Motor Skills through Neural Interface Technology.

    Loss of motor function in the upper-limb, whether through paralysis or through loss of the limb itself, is a profound disability which affects a large population worldwide. Lifelike, fully-articulated prosthetic hands exist and are commercially available; however, there is currently no satisfactory method of controlling all of the available degrees of freedom. In order to generate better control signals for this technology, and help restore normal movement, it is necessary to interface directly with the nervous system. This thesis is intended to address several of the limitations of current neural interfaces and enable the long-term extraction of control signals for fine movements of the hand and fingers. The first study addresses the problems of low signal amplitudes and short implant lifetimes in peripheral nerve interfaces. In two rhesus macaques, we demonstrate the successful implantation of regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNI), which allowed us to record high amplitude, functionally-selective signals from peripheral nerves up to 20 months post-implantation. These signals could be accurately decoded into intended movement, and used to enable monkeys to control a virtual hand prosthesis. The second study presents a novel experimental paradigm for intracortical neural interfaces, which enables detailed investigation of fine motor information contained in primary motor cortex. We used this paradigm to demonstrate accurate decoding of continuous fingertip position and enable a monkey to control a virtual hand in closed-loop. This is the first demonstration of volitional control of fine motor skill enabled by a cortical neural interface. The final study presents the design and testing of a wireless implantable neural recording system. By extracting signal power in a single, configurable frequency band onboard the device, this system achieves low power consumption while maintaining decode performance, and is applicable to cortical, peripheral, and myoelectric signals.     As part of the LU Memory Makers for PSY 33000:Learning & Memory, we helped set up, participate, and clean up a special event for patients with dementia. This service-learning experience consisted of connecting with a community partner and engaging with older individuals who suffered with dementia and also their caregivers. Not only did we observe the process of building gingerbread houses with people with dementia, but also how they interacted with us as strangers and with their peers who also have dementia. We had a real world experience of material covered in our learning and memory class

    Introduction. This study explored the prevalence of and the relationshipbetween job satisfaction and burnout among obstetrics andgynecology residency program coordinators.Methods.xThis cross-sectional study involved members of theAmerican Program Managers of Obstetrics and Gynecology. TheCopenhagen Burnout Inventory and Spector’s Job SatisfactionSurvey were used to measure the participants’ burnout and job satisfactionrates respectively. Data were collected between August 2017and December 2017. The authors used Fisher’s exact tests, Spearman’sr correlations, and multiple linear regression to analyze thedata.Results. There was an 83% (171/207) response rate. Thirteenpercent of the coordinators reported high, 70% moderate, and 17%low job satisfaction scores. Thirty-nine percent of the coordinatorsreported high, 25% moderate, and 36% slight work-related burnoutrates. Correlation coefficient showed a significantly negative relationshipbetween job satisfaction and work-rated burnout, (rs[169] =-0.402, p < 0.01). Regression analysis showed co-workers (β = -0.47)and supervision (β = -0.16) domains of the job satisfaction scale weresignificant predictors of work-related burnout (R = 0.55; F[5, 195] =11.05; p < .001).Conclusions. The findings highlight the importance of job satisfactionfactors, such as support from coworkers and supervisors, indealing with work-related burnout among residency coordinators.Kans J Med 2019;12(1):11-16

    The Megasecond Chandra X-Ray Visionary Project Observation of NGC 3115 (III): luminosity functions of LMXBs and dependence on stellar environments

    We have studied the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3115, using the Megasecond Chandra X-Ray Visionary Project Observation. With a total exposure time of ~1.1 Ms, we constructed the XLF down to a limiting luminosity of ~10^36 erg/s, much deeper than typically reached for other early-type galaxies. We found significant flattening of the overall LMXB XLF from dN/dL \propto L^{-2.2\pm0.4} above 5.5x10^37 erg/s to dN/dL \propto L^{-1.0\pm0.1} below it, though we could not rule out a fit with a higher break at ~1.6x10^38 erg/s. We also found evidence that the XLF of LMXBs in globular clusters (GCs) is overall flatter than that of field LMXBs. Thus our results for this galaxy do not support the idea that all LMXBs are formed in GCs. The XLF of field LMXBs seems to show spatial variation, with the XLF in the inner region of the galaxy being flatter than that in the outer region, probably due to contamination of LMXBs from undetected and/or disrupted GCs in the inner region. The XLF in the outer region is probably the XLF of primordial field LMXBs, exhibiting dN/dL \propto L^{-1.2\pm0.1} up to a break close to the Eddington limit of neutron star LMXBs (~1.7x10^38 erg/s). The break of the GC LMXB XLF is lower, at ~1.1x10^37 erg/s. We also confirm previous findings that the metal-rich/red GCs are more likely to host LMXBs than the metal-poor/blue GCs, which is more significant for more luminous LMXBs, and that more massive GCs are more likely to host LMXBs.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    The Megasecond Chandra X-Ray Visionary Project Observation of NGC 3115 (II): properties of point sources

    We have carried out an in-depth study of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) detected in the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3115, using the Megasecond Chandra X-Ray Visionary Project observation (total exposure time 1.1 Ms). In total we found 136 candidate LMXBs in the field and 49 in globular clusters (GCs) above 2\sigma\ detection, with 0.3--8 keV luminosity L_X ~10^36-10^39 erg/s. Other than 13 transient candidates, the sources overall have less long-term variability at higher luminosity, at least at L_X > 2x10^37 erg/s. In order to identify the nature and spectral state of our sources, we compared their collective spectral properties based on single-component models (a simple power law or a multicolor disk) with the spectral evolution seen in representative Galactic LMXBs. We found that in the L_X versus photon index \Gamma_PL and L_X versus disk temperature kT_MCD plots, most of our sources fall on a narrow track in which the spectral shape hardens with increasing luminosity below L_X~7x10^37 erg/s but is relatively constant (\Gamma_PL~1.5 or kT_MCD~1.5 keV) above this luminosity, similar to the spectral evolution of Galactic neutron star (NS) LMXBs in the soft state in the Chandra bandpass. Therefore we identified the track as the NS LMXB soft-state track and suggested sources with L_X7x10^37 erg/s as Z sources. Ten other sources (five are transients) displayed significantly softer spectra and are probably black hole X-ray binaries in the thermal state.     NLTT 41135: a field M-dwarf + brown dwarf eclipsing binary in a triple system, discovered by the MEarth observatory

    We report the discovery of an eclipsing companion to NLTT 41135, a nearby M5 dwarf that was already known to have a wider, slightly more massive common proper motion companion, NLTT 41136, at 2.4 arcsec separation. Analysis of combined-light and radial velocity curves of the system indicates that NLTT 41135B is a 31-34 +/- 3 MJup brown dwarf (where the range depends on the unknown metallicity of the host star) on a circular orbit. The visual M-dwarf pair appears to be physically bound, so the system forms a hierarchical triple, with masses approximately in the ratio 8:6:1. The eclipses are grazing, preventing an unambiguous measurement of the secondary radius, but follow-up observations of the secondary eclipse (e.g. with the James Webb Space Telescope) could permit measurements of the surface brightness ratio between the two objects, and thus place constraints on models of brown dwarfs.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 10 tables, emulateapj format.     Post-Starburst Properties of Post-Merger Galaxies

    Post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) are transition galaxies showing evidence of recent rapid star formation quenching. To understand the role of galaxy mergers in triggering quenching, we investigate the incidence of PSBs and resolved PSB properties in post-merger galaxies using both SDSS single-fiber spectra and MaNGA resolved IFU spectra. We find post-mergers have a PSB excess of 10 - 20 times that relative to their control galaxies using single-fiber PSB diagnostics. A similar excess of ~ 19 times is also found in the fraction of central (C)PSBs and ring-like (R)PSBs in post-mergers using the resolved PSB diagnostic. However, 60% of the CPSBs + RPSBs in both post-mergers and control galaxies are missed by the single-fiber data. By visually inspecting the resolved PSB distribution, we find that the fraction of outside-in quenching is 7 times higher than inside-out quenching in PSBs in post-mergers while PSBs in control galaxies do not show large differences in these quenching directions. In addition, we find a marginal deficit of HI gas in PSBs relative to non-PSBs in post-mergers using the MaNGA-HI data. The excesses of PSBs in post-mergers suggest that mergers play an important role in triggering quenching. Resolved IFU spectra are important to recover the PSBs missed by single-fiber spectra. The excess of outside-in quenching relative to inside-out quenching in post-mergers suggests that AGN are not the dominant quenching mechanism in these galaxies, but that processes from the disk (gas inflows/consumption and stellar feedback) play a more important role.Comment: Accepted in MNRAS on May 12 2023, 19 pages, 15 figures, 4 table
