Evaluation of Hungarian Wines for Resveratrol by Overpressured Layer Chromatography
A method, including solid phase extraction sample preparation, overpressured layer chromatographic separation and subsequent densitometric evaluation, was developed for measurement of total resveratrol (cis- and trans-isomers) content of wine. The amount of resveratrol was determined in wine samples from different winemaking regions of Hungary. The total resveratrol was high in Hungarian red wines (3.6â11 mg/L), and much lower in white ones (0.04â1.5 mg/L)
Geometric phase outside a Schwarzschild black hole and the Hawking effect
We study the Hawking effect in terms of the geometric phase acquired by a
two-level atom as a result of coupling to vacuum fluctuations outside a
Schwarzschild black hole in a gedanken experiment. We treat the atom in
interaction with a bath of fluctuating quantized massless scalar fields as an
open quantum system, whose dynamics is governed by a master equation obtained
by tracing over the field degrees of freedom. The nonunitary effects of this
system are examined by analyzing the geometric phase for the Boulware, Unruh
and Hartle-Hawking vacua respectively. We find, for all the three cases, that
the geometric phase of the atom turns out to be affected by the space-time
curvature which backscatters the vacuum field modes. In both the Unruh and
Hartle-Hawking vacua, the geometric phase exhibits similar behaviors as if
there were thermal radiation at the Hawking temperature from the black hole.
So, a measurement of the change of the geometric phase as opposed to that in a
flat space-time can in principle reveal the existence of the Hawking radiation.Comment: 14 pages, no figures, a typo in the References corrected, version to

Total Absorption Spectroscopy Study of Rb Decay: A Major Contributor to Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum Shape
The antineutrino spectra measured in recent experiments at reactors are
inconsistent with calculations based on the conversion of integral beta spectra
recorded at the ILL reactor. Rb makes the dominant contribution to the
reactor spectrum in the 5-8 MeV range but its decay properties are in question.
We have studied Rb decay with total absorption spectroscopy. Previously
unobserved beta feeding was seen in the 4.5-5.5 region and the GS to GS feeding
was found to be 87.5(25)%. The impact on the reactor antineutrino spectra
calculated with the summation method is shown and discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Real-time monitoring of cellular dynamics using a microfluidic cell culture system with integrated electrode array and potentiostat
A versatile microfluidic, multichamber cell culture and analysis system with an integrated electrode array and potentiostat suitable for electrochemical detection and microscopic imaging is presented in this paper. The system, which allows on-line electrode cleaning and modification, was developed for real-time monitoring of cellular dynamics, exemplified in this work by monitoring of redox metabolism inside living yeast cells and dopamine release from PC12 cell
Cytogerontology since 1881: A reappraisal of August Weismann and a review of modern progress
Cytogerontology, the science of cellular ageing, originated in 1881 with the prediction by August Weismann that the somatic cells of higher animals have limited division potential. Weismann's prediction was derived by considering the role of natural selection in regulating the duration of an organism's life. For various reasons, Weismann's ideas on ageing fell into neglect following his death in 1914, and cytogerontology has only reappeared as a major research area following the demonstration by Hayflick and Moorhead in the early 1960s that diploid human fibroblasts are restricted to a finite number of divisions in vitro.
In this review we give a detailed account of Weismann's theory, and we reveal that his ideas were both more extensive in their scope and more pertinent to current research than is generally recognised. We also appraise the progress which has been made over the past hundred years in investigating the causes of ageing, with particular emphasis being given to (i) the evolution of ageing, and (ii) ageing at the cellular level. We critically assess the current state of knowledge in these areas and recommend a series of points as primary targets for future research
Development of SimCells as a novel chassis for functional biosensors
This work serves as a proof-of-concept for bacterially derived SimCells (Simple Cells), which contain the cell machinery from bacteria and designed DNA (or potentially a simplified genome) to instruct the cell to carry out novel, specific tasks. SimCells represent a reprogrammable chassis without a native chromosome, which can host designed DNA to perform defined functions. In this paper, the use of Escherichia coli MC1000 âminD minicells as a non-reproducing chassis for SimCells was explored, as demonstrated by their ability to act as sensitive biosensors for small molecules. Highly purified minicells derived from E. coli strains containing gene circuits for biosensing were able to transduce the input signals from several small molecules (glucarate, acrylate and arabinose) into the production of green fluorescent protein (GFP). A mathematical model was developed to fit the experimental data for induction of gene expression in SimCells. The intracellular ATP level was shown to be important for SimCell function. A purification and storage protocol was developed to prepare SimCells which could retain their functions for an extended period of time. This study demonstrates that SimCells are able to perform as 'smart bioparticles' controlled by designed gene circuits
Total absorption spectroscopy study of the beta decay of Br-86 and Rb-91
The beta decays of Br-86 and Rb-91 have been studied using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. The radioactive nuclei were produced at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyvaskyla and further purified using the JYFLTRAP. Br-86 and Rb-91 are considered to be major contributors to the decay heat in reactors. In addition, Rb-91 was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam et al. assuming that this decaywas well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results show that both decays were suffering from the Pandemonium effect and that the results of Rudstam et al. should be renormalized. The relative impact of the studied decays in the prediction of the decay heat and antineutrino spectrum from reactors has been evaluated.Peer reviewe
Pharmacogenetic Associations of MMP9 and MMP12 Variants with Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Hypertension
MMP-9 and -12 function in tissue remodeling and may play roles in cardiovascular disease (CVD). We assessed associations of four MMP polymorphisms and three antihypertensive drugs with cardiovascular outcomes.Hypertensives (nâ=â42,418) from a double-blind, randomized, clinical trial were randomized to chlorthalidone, amlodipine, lisinopril, or doxazosin treatment (mean follow up, 4.9 years). The primary outcome was coronary heart disease (CHD). Secondary outcomes included combined CHD, all CVD outcomes combined, stroke, heart failure (HF), and mortality. Genotype-treatment interactions were tested.â=â0.015). for CHD and composite CVD. The data suggest that these genes may provide useful clinical information with respect to treatment decisions
Gain and Loss of Phototrophic Genes Revealed by Comparison of Two Citromicrobium Bacterial Genomes
Proteobacteria are thought to have diverged from a phototrophic ancestor, according to the scattered distribution of phototrophy throughout the proteobacterial clade, and so the occurrence of numerous closely related phototrophic and chemotrophic microorganisms may be the result of the loss of genes for phototrophy. A widespread form of bacterial phototrophy is based on the photochemical reaction center, encoded by puf and puh operons that typically are in a âphotosynthesis gene clusterâ (abbreviated as the PGC) with pigment biosynthesis genes. Comparison of two closely related Citromicrobial genomes (98.1% sequence identity of complete 16S rRNA genes), Citromicrobium sp. JL354, which contains two copies of reaction center genes, and Citromicrobium strain JLT1363, which is chemotrophic, revealed evidence for the loss of phototrophic genes. However, evidence of horizontal gene transfer was found in these two bacterial genomes. An incomplete PGC (pufLMC-puhCBA) in strain JL354 was located within an integrating conjugative element, which indicates a potential mechanism for the horizontal transfer of genes for phototrophy
