    A holistic model to infer mathematics performance: the interrelated impact of student, family and school context variables

    The present study aims at exploring predictors influencing mathematics performance. In particular, the study focuses on internal students' characteristics (gender, age, metacognitive experience, mathematics self-efficacy) and external contextual factors (GDP of school location, parents' educational level, teachers' educational level, and teacher beliefs). A sample of 1749 students and 91 teachers from Chinese primary schools were involved in the study. Path analysis was used to test the direct and indirect relations between the predictors and mathematics performance. Results reveal that a large proportion of mathematics performance can be directly predicted from students' metacognitive experiences. In addition, other student characteristics and contextual variables influence mathematics performance in direct or indirect ways

    Topological Superfluid Transition Induced by Periodically Driven Optical Lattice

    We propose a scenario to create topological superfluid in a periodically driven two-dimensional square optical lattice. We study the phase diagram of a spin-orbit coupled s-wave pairing superfluid in a periodically driven two-dimensional square optical lattice. We find that a phase transition from a trivial superfluid to a topological superfluid occurs when the potentials of the optical lattices are periodically changed. The topological phase is called Floquet topological superfluid and can host Majorana fermions.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

    Quantiled conditional variance, skewness, and kurtosis by Cornish-Fisher expansion

    The conditional variance, skewness, and kurtosis play a central role in time series analysis. These three conditional moments (CMs) are often studied by some parametric models but with two big issues: the risk of model mis-specification and the instability of model estimation. To avoid the above two issues, this paper proposes a novel method to estimate these three CMs by the so-called quantiled CMs (QCMs). The QCM method first adopts the idea of Cornish-Fisher expansion to construct a linear regression model, based on nn different estimated conditional quantiles. Next, it computes the QCMs simply and simultaneously by using the ordinary least squares estimator of this regression model, without any prior estimation of the conditional mean. Under certain conditions that allow estimated conditional quantiles to be biased, the QCMs are shown to be consistent with the convergence rate n−1/2n^{-1/2}. Simulation studies indicate that the QCMs perform well under different scenarios of estimated conditional quantiles. In the application, the study of QCMs for eight major stock indexes demonstrates the effectiveness of financial rescue plans during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, and unveils a new ``non-zero kink'' phenomenon in the ``news impact curve'' function for the conditional kurtosis

    Flood Routing Based on Diffusion Wave Equation Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

    AbstractOne-dimensional diffusion wave equation is a simplified form of the full Saint Venant equations by neglecting the inertia terms. In this study, the Lattice Boltzmann method for the linear diffusion wave equation was developed. In order to verify the calculation accuracy of it, the analytical solution and Muskingum method were also introduced. Excellent agreement was obtained between observed data and numerical prediction. The results show that the Lattice Boltzmann method is a very competitive method for solving diffusion wave equation in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy

By constructing an appropriate auxiliary function, we derive the sufficient conditions such that there are no coexisting steady-state solutions to the model.     Optimization of sub-grid scale model for abrasive flow machining curved tube based on large eddy simulation

    Abrasive flow machining technology is a new type of precision machining technology. Due to its unique rheological properties, it can process any complex structure and size parts to meet the requirements that conventional machining cannot meet. Combined with the turbulent flow characteristics of the abrasive flow, the large eddy simulation numerical method is used to simulate the machining process of the abrasive flow. The influence of different sub-grid scale models on the simulation results is discussed. Taking curved tube as the research object, the static pressure, dynamic pressure and velocity of different sub-grid models are analyzed to find the best sub-grid scale model. Large eddy simulation method is used to simulate the complex flow channel parts, and the best sub-grid scale model suitable for complex flow channels is determined, which reveals the grinding and polishing rule of abrasive flow and provides academic support for future research. Therefore, it has frontier and important research value

    Quality of life in rectal cancer patients with permanent colostomy in Xi’an

    Purposes: The aim of this study was to observe the quality of life (QOL) in rectal cancer patients with permanent colostomy in different periods after operation. Methods: A 1-,3-,6-month prospective study of QOL in 51 rectal cancer patients with permanent colostomy and 50 ones without permanent colostomy was assessed by using European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QOL-30 and CR38 questionnaires. Results: The variation of QOL in different periods was “v” type. In the 1st postoperative month, these patients had the lowest quality of life scores, accompanied significantly varied functions and severe symptoms. Almost of all indexes of these patients had improved consistently in postoperative periods. The scores of global QOL even better than pre-operative level at 6th months post-operation, but the social function, body image, chemotherapy side effects and financial difficulties had not restored to the baseline level. Patients without permanent colostomy had a better score in most of categories of QOL-30 and CR38. Conclusions: The 1st postoperative month was crucial for patients’ recovery, in which we should pay great attention to these problems which relate to the recovery of rectal cancer patients with permanent colostomy.Keywords: Quality of life, Rectal cancer, Permanent colostomy, EORTC QOL-30 and CR38 questionnairesAfrican Health sciences Vol 14 No. 1 March 201

    Measurement and correlation of liquid - Liquid equilibria of three imidazolium ionic liquids with acetone and cyclohexane

    Ionic liquids (ILs) can be recycled as extractants for their low vapor pressure and volatility. More and more applications are applied to the separation of industrial organic matter. The industrial production of ILs has gradually been realized, which also widens the way for the application of ILs. In this work, the liquid-liquid extraction of cyclohexane-acetone azeotropic mixture with different ILs {1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluormethylsulfonyl), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethansulfonate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide} is studied. The extraction mechanism is discussed based on the molecular scale. The relationship between hydrogen bond donor and acceptor between ILs and acetone is analyzed by COSMO-SAC. The interaction between molecules is optimized and calculated by Materials Studio 7.0. The extraction ability of ILs is analyzed by radial distribution function, and the experimental results are verified. The liquid-liquid equilibrium test is carried out at 298.15 K. Distribution and selectivity are indices used to judge the extraction efficiency of ILs. The NRTL model and UNIQUAC model are adopted to correlate the liquid-liquid equilibrium data.     High CD8+tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes indicate severe exhaustion and poor prognosis in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma

    BackgroundExhaustion of CD8+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), characterized by the overexpression of immune checkpoints (IC), is a major impediment to anti-tumor immunity. However, the exhaustion status of CD8+TILs in angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the exhaustion status of CD8+TILs in AITL and its influence on prognosis.MethodsThe correlation between CD8+TILs and IC expression in AITL was analyzed using single-cell RNA sequencing (n = 2), flow cytometry (n = 20), and RNA sequencing (n = 20). Biological changes related to CD8+TILs exhaustion at different cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) levels (mean expression levels of CD8A, CD8B, GZMA, GZMB, and PRF1) in AITL were evaluated using RNA sequencing (n = 20) and further validated using the GEO dataset (n = 51). The impact of CD8 protein expression and CTL levels on patient prognosis was analyzed using flow cytometry and RNA sequencing, respectively.ResultsOur findings demonstrated that the higher the infiltration of CD8+TILs, the higher was the proportion of exhausted CD8+TILs characterized by the overexpression of multiple IC. This was accompanied by extensive exhaustion-related biological changes, which suggested severe exhaustion in CD8+TILs and may be one of the main reasons for the poor prognosis of patients with high CD8+TILs and CTL.ConclusionOur study comprehensively reveals the exhaustion status of CD8+TILs and their potential negative impact on AITL prognosis, which facilitates further mechanistic studies and is valuable for guiding immunotherapy strategies
