    Multiwavelength fiber laser based on bidirectional lyot filter in conjunction with intensity dependent loss mechanism

    We experimentally demonstrate a multiwavelength fiber laser (MWFL) based on bidirectional Lyot filter. A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is used as the gain medium, while its combination with polarization controllers (PCs) and polarization beam combiner (PBC) induces intensity dependent loss (IDL) mechanism. The IDL mechanism acts as an intensity equalizer to flatten the multiwavelength spectrum, which can be obtained at a certain polarization state. Using different ratio of optical splitter has affected to multiwavelength flatness degradation. Subsequently, when we removed a polarizer in the setup, the extinction ratio (ER) is decreased. Ultimately, with two segments of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF), two channel spacings can be achieved due to splicing shift of 0° and 90°

    Simulation of sub-drains performance using visual MODFLOW for slope water seepage Problem

    Numerical simulation technique was used for investigating water seepage problem at the Botanic Park Kuala Lumpur. A proposed sub-drains installation in problematic site location was simulated using Modular Three-Dimensional Finite Difference Groundwater Flow (MODFLOW) software. The results of simulation heads during transient condition showed that heads in between 43 m (water seepage occurred at level 2) until 45 m (water seepage occurred at level 4) which heads measurement are referred to mean sea level. However, elevations measurements for level 2 showed the values between 41 to 42 m from mean sea level and elevations for level 4 between 42 to 45 m from mean sea level. These results indicated an increase in heads for level 2 and level 4 between 1 to 2 m when compared to elevations slope at the level 2 and level 4. The head increases surpass the elevation level of the slope area that causing water seepage at level 2 and level 4. In order to overcome this problems, the heads level need to be decrease to 1 until 2 m by using two options of sub-drain dimension size. Sub-drain with the dimension of 0.0750 m (diameter), 0.10 m (length) and using 4.90 m spacing was the best method to use as it was able to decrease the heads to the required levels of 1 to 2 m

    Effects of timed artificial insemination following estrus synchronization in postpartum beef cattle.

    The objectives of this study were to evaluate estrus response and pregnancy rates resulting from timed artificial insemination (AI) following estrus synchronization using CIDR in postpartum beef cattle. A total of 100 cows were randomly divided into three groups. Groups 1, 2 and 3 were artificially inseminated at 48-50 h(n=30), 53-55 h(n=30) and 58-60 h (n=40) after CIDR removal, respectively. Estrussynchronization was carried out using a CIDR containing 1.38 mg progesterone. All cows were given 2 mg estradiol benzoate, intramuscularly on the day of CIDR insertion (D 0). The CIDR was removed after 8 days and 125 μg of prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α) was injected intramuscularly. One day after CIDR removal all cows were given 1 mg of estradiol benzoate intramuscularly (D 9). Cows were observed visually for estrus after removal of CIDR. Between 30 and 32 days after timed AI, pregnancy was determined using transrectal ultrasonography. The first estrus observation which is approximately 32 h after CIDR removal showed no significant difference (P>0.05) among the three groups. The onset response of estrus after 32 h removal of CIDR was less than 10% in all three group s 6.6% (G1), 6.8% (G2) and 7.3% (G3). Furthermore, percentages of estrus response (D 10) following CIDR removal were 76.6%, 75.0% and 77.5%. The difference between on D9 and D10 estrus response were statistically significant (P<0.05). The pregnancy rates were 23.3% (G1), 26.6% (G2) and 37.5% (G3), which were not significant (P>0.05)

    An Electronically Reconfigurable Patch Antenna Design for Polarization Diversity with Fixed Resonant Frequency

    In this paper, an electronically polarization reconfigurable circular patch antenna with fixed resonant frequency operating at Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) frequency band (2.4-2.48 GHz) is presented. The structure of the proposed design consists of a circular patch as a radiating element fed by coaxial probe, cooperated with four equal-length slits etched on the edge along x-axis and y-axis. A total of four switches was used and embedded across the slits at specific locations, thus controlled the length of the slits. By activating and deactivating the switches (ON and OFF) across the slits, the current on the patch is changed, thus modifying the electric field and polarization of the antenna. Consequently, the polarization excited by the proposed antenna can be switched into three types, either linear polarization, left-hand circular polarization or right-hand circular polarization. This paper proposes a simple approach that able to switch the polarizations and excited at the same operating frequency. Simulated and measured results of ideal case (using copper strip switches) and real case (using PIN diode switches) are compared and presented to demonstrate the performance of the antenna

    Dual level searching approach for solving multi-objective optimisation problems using hybrid particle swarm optimisation and bats echolocation-inspired algorithms

    A dual level searching approach for multi objective optimisation problems using particle swarm optimisation and modified adaptive bats sonar algorithm is presented. The concept of echolocation of a colony of bats to find prey in the modified adaptive bats sonar algorithm is integrated with the established particle swarm optimisation algorithm. The proposed algorithm incorporates advantages of both particle swarm optimisation and modified adaptive bats sonar algorithm approach to handle the complexity of multi objective optimisation problems. These include swarm flight attitude and swarm searching strategy. The performance of the algorithm is verified through several multi objective optimisation benchmark test functions and problem. The acquired results show that the proposed algorithm perform well to produce a reliable Pareto front. The proposed algorithm can thus be an effective method for solving of multi objective optimisation problems

    Effects of salinity, temperature, light intensity and light regimes on production, growth and reproductive parameters of Apocyclops dengizicus

    The effects of salinity, temperature, and light conditions on production and development, longevity, survival and sex ratios of the cyclopoid copepod, A. dengizicus were determined. Seven different salinity levels (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 psu), four temperatures (20, 25, 30, 35 °C), three different light intensities (33.3, 85.3, 162.1 μmol photons/ m^2/ s) and light regimes (24:0, 0:24, and 12:12 h light:dark regime) were employed. The highest production was achieved under 20 psu salinity. The optimum temperature required for the maximum reproduction and shortest development time was 35 °C. The production was highest (p<.05) and development rate of A. dengizicus was shortest (p<.05) under the lowest light intensity (33.3 μmol photons/ m^2/ s). Continuous light (24:0 h LD) showed positive effects on growth and production. Light regimes 24:0 h and 12:12 h LD yielded the highest total production and growth (p<.05), with highest (p<.05) survival percentage. This study demonstrated that A. dengizicus can tolerate wide range of environmental conditions and can be cultured for commercial live feed purposes as well as toxicity studies

A moral human being should posses the components categorised as concept, that is, the rules and principles which are deemed necessary to be used in actions and feelings or emotions which support the belief that a concept or action should be carried out. Apart from that, a moral human being should have the moral knowledge of the surroundings, know how to interact and act according to the decisions made. Character education will enable one to be a moral human being who should know the good, desire the good and do good

    Effects of resynchronization with progesterone and prostaglandin F2• on estrus response and pregnancy rate in beef cattle

    This experiment was designed to compare the estrus response and pregnancy rate of cows first synchronized using CIDR with cows that were resynchronized after failing to display estrus. Estrus response and pregnancy rate were also compared between cows resynchronized with either CIDR or prostaglandin F2• (PGF2•). Initially, 140 Brangus cows were synchronized with CIDR. About 30 days after Artificial Insemination (AI), cows were checked for pregnancy using ultrasound and those that remain open were divided into two groups and resynchronized with either CIDR or two injections of PGF2• at 11 days interval. All cows were observed visually for estrus response for a period of 2 h at 12 h interval, starting immediately after CIDR removal or after the second injection of PGF2•. Cows were in estrus when they mounted if at least 3 times during the period of observation. Following removal of CIDR and second injection of PGF2•, cows were inseminated 60 and 70 h later, respectively. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) in estrus response and pregnancy rate between cows initial synchronization and resynchronization with CIDR protocol. Although, statistically not significant there was relatively higher percentage of estrus response (81.6 vs. 70%) and pregnancy rate (30.6 vs. 28.0%) in cows resynchronized with CIDR than cows resynchronized with PGF2•
