Aim To compare the quality of the 2008 cancer mortality data of the Istanbul Directorate of Cemeteries (IDC) with the 2008 data of International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), and discuss the suitability of using this databank for estimations of cancer mortality in the future. Methods We used 2008 and 2010 death records of the IDC and compared it to TUIK and IARC data. Results According to the WHO statistics, in Turkey in 2008 there were 67 255 estimated cancer deaths. As the population of Turkey was 71 517 100, the cancer mortality rate was 9.4 per 10 000. According to the IDC statistics, the cancer mortality rate in Istanbul in 2008 was 5.97 per 10 000. Conclusion IDC estimates were higher than WHO probably because WHO bases its estimates on a sample group and because of the restrictions of IDC data collection method. Death certificates could be a reliable and accurate data source for mortality statistics if the problems of data collection are solved

The purpose of this study was to evaluate smoking prevalence and factors associated with smoking among students at the Physical Education and Sports School of Istanbul University. A cross-sectional study was performed on total of 373 students who have been continuing their education at the school from February to March 2011. A total of 166 responders were male (44.5%) and 207 responders were female (55.5%) out of 373 participants. Of the 373 students, 94 (25.2%) were current smokers and the average age for beginning smoking was 18.03 ± 2.6 (min: 12–max: 30). In this study, we found that the smoking prevalence associated with some variables such as age place of residence, mother’s education, father’s education, cigarette or tobacco use in the living place, knowledge status of students about their teacher’s smoking habits and alcohol consumption (p ≤ 0.05). These findings suggest that the students, who will train the sportspeople of the future, and should be considered a role model of healthy behavior in society. Consequently, we believe that sports school students should take an active role in providing health education programs to increase their awareness about the detrimental effects of smoking and to extensively quit smoking in public

Background: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies are becoming increasingly acceptable to the general public and are increasingly used around the world. The international rise in focus on CAM and the increased incorporation of CAM into medical curricula, make it important to gain insight into the knowledge and attitudes of medical students about CAM and its integration in the medical curriculum. Materials and Methods: In this present study, we attempt to investigate the Cerrahpasa medical faculty students’ knowledge, attitude and practices of the on CAM. The study used a primary cross-sectional data collection from students of Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty, Istanbul University, in 2012-2013 academic years. Results: Students knowledge of CAM between classes was also compared. There were also statistically significant differences about the knowledge of those methods (acupuncture, acupressure, yoga, reiki, prayer, meditation massage, dietary, spa). Prayer was the most known modality in all medical classes’ students (first year students: 254, sixth year students: 192). The students who participated in the study stated that 433 (%59.4) have some knowledge about the acupuncture (first year students: 229, sixth year students: 204). Acupressure was found to be at least known methods for CAM (first year students: 313, sixth year students: 282). Conclusion: Medical students in our faculty also had limited knowledge about CAM therapies. Medical students also have an understanding of the importance of CAM education in the medical curriculum, specifically how it will positively influence professional attitude and stimulate the doctor–patient relationship

Background/aim: The present study aimed to create a decision tree for the identification of clinical, laboratory and radiological data of individuals with COVID-19 diagnosis or suspicion of Covid-19 in the Intensive Care Units of a Training and Research Hospital of the Ministry of Health on the European side of the city of Istanbul. Materials and methods: The present study, which had a retrospective and sectional design, covered all the 97 patients treated with Covid-19 diagnosis or suspicion of COVID-19 in the intensive care unit between 12 March and 30 April 2020. In all cases who had symptoms admitted to the COVID-19 clinic, nasal swab samples were taken and thoracic CT was performed when considered necessary by the physician, radiological findings were interpreted, clinical and laboratory data were included to create the decision tree. Results: A total of 61 (21 women, 40 men) of the cases included in the study died, and 36 were discharged with a cure from the intensive care process. By using the decision tree algorithm created in this study, dead cases will be predicted at a rate of 95%, and those who survive will be predicted at a rate of 81%. The overall accuracy rate of the model was found at 90%. Conclusions: There were no differences in terms of gender between dead and live patients. Those who died were older, had lower MON, MPV, and had higher D-Dimer values than those who survived

Infrared focal plane arrays are critical components in many of the military and civilian applications for advanced imaging systems. HgCdTe is one of the most widely used infrared detector material. An important issue with this material for thermal imaging system is the operating temperature as it determines cryocooler crucial characteristics, namely power comsumption and device lifetime. Therefore, there is an effort towards to operate at higher temperatures, but performance characteristics need to be carefully designed. Increasing operating temperature causes to increase diode current due to thermal generation and also is associated with 1/f noise. Furthermore, number of defective diodes increases at high operating temperatures. High quality material is the first requirement to maintain the same diode characteristic at higher temperatures. This can be achieved by using Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) method that provides ultra-high vacuum condition and ultra-pure materials (Hg, CdTe, Te). Further way to improve diode characteristics at higher temperatures is applying design modifications. For instance, adjusting absorber layer parameters such as thickness, cadmium mole fraction and doping level or adding some extra layers to diode structure. Barrier detectors, auger suppression structures and photon trapping structures are the major high operating temperature (HOT) infrared detector configurations. Barrier detectors, auger suppression structures and photon trapping structures are the major high operating temperature (HOT) infrared detector configurations. Within the scope of this thesis, a new HgCdTe MWIR photodiode is designed by interpreting HOT structures which are mentioned above. With the designed structure, it was observed that the dark current improved at all temperatures between 100 K and 300 K. The quantum efficiency decreased by 3.1% at -0.1 V due to barrier layer in the designed structure. However, this reduction was reduced to 1.2% by photon trapping structure. This structure also provided an improvement of about 18.2% in the dark current. This improvement is consistent with volume reduction in the photodiode. The surface component of the dark current was not included in the simulations. Therefore, during the fabrication of the designed structure, passivation of the mesa walls need to be done well to prevent large surface leakage current.Thesis (M.S.) -- Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.
