    Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation: A novel treatment of facial venous malformation

    We performed radiofrequency ablation to treat a symptomatic facial venous malformation of a 24-year-old woman under ultrasound scan-guidance. The 20.25-cm sized original facial venous malformation in her right cheek markedly reduced without any scar formation and was grossly not visible after 1 month of the procedure. In the 3-month follow-up magnetic resonance imaging, original venous malformation reduced in volume to 5.40 cm. Radiofrequency ablation may provide an alternative treatment for facial venous malformations

    Korean Studies on Blood Stasis: An Overview

    Blood stasis is one of the important pathological concepts in Korean medicine. We analyzed the Korean studies concerning blood stasis. We searched for articles in eight electronic databases from their inception to September, 2014. We included reviews, clinical studies, and preclinical studies that had studied blood stasis and excluded articles in which blood stasis was not mentioned or in which the original authors had not explained blood stasis. Of 211 total included studies, 19 were reviews, 52 were clinical studies, and 140 were preclinical articles. โ€œStagnant blood within the bodyโ€ was the most frequently mentioned phrase of the traditional concept of blood stasis. Traumatic injury was the most frequently studied disease/condition in the clinical studies. In the preclinical studies, coagulopathy was studied most frequently, followed by hyperviscosity, hyperlipidemia, inflammation, neoplasm, ischemic brain injury, and atherosclerosis. Hyeolbuchukeo-tang and Angelicae Gigantis Radix were the most frequent formula and single herb, respectively, used in the blood stasis researches. The results showed that blood stasis was mainly recognized as disorder of circulation and many studies showed the effectiveness of activating blood circulating herbs for diseases and pathologies such as traumatic injury or coagulopathy. Further studies are needed in the pathologic mechanisms and various diseases of blood stasis

    Stronger association of perceived health with socio-economic inequality during COVID-19 pandemic than pre-pandemic era

    Abstract Objective The COVID-19 pandemic has changed peoples routine of daily living and posed major risks to global health and economy. Few studies have examined differential impacts of economic factors on health during pandemic compared to pre-pandemic. We aimed to compare the strength of associations between perceived health and socioeconomic position (household income, educational attainment, and employment) estimated before and during the pandemic. Methods Two waves of nationwide survey [on 2018(T1;n=โ€‰1200) and 2021(T2;n=โ€‰1000)] were done for 2200 community adults. A balanced distribution of confounders (demographics and socioeconomic position) were achieved across the T2 and T1 by use of the inverse probability of treatment weighting. Distributions of perceived health [= (excellent or very good)/(bad, fair, or good)] for physical-mental-social-spiritual subdomains were compared between T1 and T2. Odds of bad/fair/good health for demographics and socioeconomic position were obtained by univariate logistic regression. Adjusted odds (aOR) of bad/fair/good health in lower household income(<โ€‰3000โ€‰U.S. dollars/month) were retrieved using the multiple hierarchical logistic regression models of T1 and T2. Results Perceived health of excellent/very good at T2 was higher than T1 for physical(T1โ€‰=โ€‰36.05%, T2โ€‰=โ€‰39.13%; P=โ€‰0.04), but were lower for mental(T1โ€‰=โ€‰38.71%, T2โ€‰=โ€‰35.17%; P=โ€‰0.01) and social(T1โ€‰=โ€‰42.48%, T2โ€‰=โ€‰35.17%; Pโ€‰0.05). AORs of bad/fair/good health in lower household income were stronger in T2 than T1, for mental [aOR (95% CI)โ€‰=โ€‰2.15(1.68โ€“2.77) in T2, 1.33(1.06โ€“1.68) in T1; aOR differenceโ€‰=โ€‰0.82(P<โ€‰0.001)], physical [aOR (95% CI)โ€‰=โ€‰2.64(2.05โ€“3.41) in T2, 1.50(1.18โ€“1.90) in T1; aOR differenceโ€‰=โ€‰1.14(P<โ€‰0.001)] and social [aOR (95% CI)โ€‰=โ€‰2.15(1.68โ€“2.77) in T2, 1.33(1.06โ€“1.68) in T1; aOR differenceโ€‰=โ€‰0.35(P=โ€‰0.049)] subdomains. Conclusions Risks of perceived health worsening for mental and social subdomains in people with lower monthly household income or lower educational attainment became stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic era. In consideration of the prolonged pandemic as of mid-2022, policies aiming not only to sustain the monthly household income and compulsory education but also to actively enhance the perceived mental-social health status have to be executed and maintained

    Case Report and Review of Literature: Autosomal Recessive Hypophosphatemic Rickets Type 2 Caused by a Pathogenic Variant in ENPP1 Gene

    Autosomal recessive hypophosphatemic rickets type 2 (ARHR2) is a rare form of hereditary rickets, which is characterized by defective bone mineralization and renal phosphate wasting due to a loss-of-function variant in the ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1) gene. Although pathogenic variant of ENPP1 has been known to manifest other phenotypes including arterial calcification, hearing loss, ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament, or pseudoxanthoma elasticum, there have been few reports including systematic examination in individuals diagnosed with ARHR2 to date. Herein, we report a case of ARHR2 with a bi-allelic pathogenic variant of ENPP1, in which the patient presented with gait abnormalities with severe genu varum at 26 months of age. Targeted gene panel sequencing was performed to investigate the genetic cause of rickets, and a homozygous nonsense variant in ENPP1, c.783C&gt;G (p.Tyr261*), was identified. The patient was treated with oral phosphate and active vitamin D supplements and underwent corrective osteotomy for varus deformity. His phenotype was limited to rickets. A periodic systematic evaluation is needed to identify any comorbidities in ARHR2 patients since ENPP1 variants may present phenotypes other than rickets and symptoms may evolve or change over time

    Effect of Incivility, Resilience, and Social Support Experienced by Nursing Students on Burnout in Clinical Practice

    PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine effect of incivility, resilience, and social support experienced by nursing students on burnout in clinical practice. METHODS: Subjects were 140 nursing students who agreed to participate in this study. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson&apos;s correlation and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS WIN 23.0 program. RESULTS: Burnout showed significantly positive correlation with incivility but significantly negative correlations with resilience and social support. Factors affecting burnout were satisfaction with major-dissatisfaction, satisfaction with major-average, social support, grade, and relationship with peers. Satisfaction with major (dissatisfaction) had the greatest effect on burnout, explaining 41% of the total variance. CONCLUSION: According to this study, dissatisfaction with major was identified as the most significant factor influencing burnout of nursing students in clinical practice. Therefore, it is important to develop and implement programs that can reduce dissatisfaction with major and increase social support and relationship with peers in order to lower burnout of nursing students. In addition, a systemic management of fourth-grade students with a high level of clinical practice is necessary to reduce the level of clinical practice. The authors declared no conflict of interest

    C-terminally mutated tubby protein accumulates in aggresomes

    The tubby protein (Tub), a putative transcription factor, plays important roles in the maintenance and function of neuronal cells. A splicing defect-causing mutation in the 3&apos;-end of the tubby gene, which is predicted to disrupt the carboxy-terminal region of the Tub protein, causes maturity-onset obesity, blindness, and deafness in mice. Although this pathological Tub mutation leads to a loss of function, the precise mechanism has not yet been investigated. Here, we found that the mutant Tub proteins were mostly localized to puncta found in the perinuclear region and that the C-terminus was important for its solubility. Immunocytochemical analysis revealed that puncta of mutant Tub co-localized with the aggresome. Moreover, whereas wild-type Tub was translocated to the nucleus by extracellular signaling, the mutant forms failed to undergo such translocation. Taken together, our results suggest that the malfunctions of the Tub mutant are caused by its misfolding and subsequent localization to aggresomes.ope

    A Simplified Technique of Percutaneous Hepatic Artery Port-Catheter Insertion for the Treatment of Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Portal Vein Invasion

    OBJECTIVE: We assessed the outcomes of a simplified technique for the percutaneous placement of a hepatic artery port-catheter system for chemotherapy infusion in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein invasion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2003 to February 2008, percutaneous hepatic artery port-catheter insertion was performed in 122 patients who had hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein invasion. The arterial access route was the common femoral artery. The tip of the catheter was wedged into the right gastroepiploic artery without an additional fixation device. A side hole was positioned at the distal common hepatic artery to allow the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents into the hepatic arteries. Coil embolization was performed only to redistribute to the hepatic arteries or to prevent the inadvertent delivery of chemotherapeutic agents into extrahepatic arteries. The port chamber was created at either the supra-inguinal or infra-inguinal region. RESULTS: Technical success was achieved in all patients. Proper positioning of the side hole was checked before each scheduled chemotherapy session by port angiography. Catheter-related complications occurred in 19 patients (16%). Revision was achieved in 15 of 18 patients (83%). CONCLUSION: This simplified method demonstrates excellent technical feasibility, an acceptable range of complications, and is hence recommended for the management of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein thrombosis.ope

    Skin wound healing rate in fish depends on species and microbiota

    The skin is a barrier between the body and the environment that protects the integrity of the body and houses a vast microbiota. By interacting with the host immune system, the microbiota improves wound healing in mammals. However, in fish, the evidence of the role of microbiota and the type of species on wound healing is scarce. We aimed to examine the wound healing rate in various fish species and evaluate the effect of antibiotics on the wound healing process. The wound healing rate was much faster in two of the seven fish species selected based on habitat and skin types. We also demonstrated that the composition of the microbiome plays a role in the wound healing rate. After antibiotic treatment, the wound healing rate improved in one species. Through 16S rRNA sequencing, we identified microbiome correlates of varying responses on wound healing after antibiotic treatment. These findings indicate that not only the species difference but also the microbiota play a significant role in wound healing in fish.1
