    Thermal performance of a naturally ventilated building using a combined algorithm of probabilistic occupant behaviour and deterministic heat and mass balance models

    This study explores the role of occupant behaviour in relation to natural ventilation and its effects on summer thermal performance of naturally ventillated buildings. We develop a behavioural algorithm (the Yun algorithm) representing probablistic occupant behaviour and implement this within a dynamic energy simulation tool. A core of this algorithm is the use of Markov chain and Monte Carlo methods in order to integrate probablistic window use models into dynamic energy simulation procedures. The comparison between predicted and monitored window use patterns shows good agreement. Performance of the Yn algorithm is demonstrated for active, medium and passive window users and a range of office constructions. Results indicate, for example, that in some cases, the temperature of an office occupied by the active window user in summer is up to 2.6ºC lower than that for the passive window user. A comparison is made with results from an alernative bahavioural algorithm developed by Humphreys [H.B. Rijal, P. Tuohy, M.A. Humphreys, J.F. Nicol, A. Samual, J. Clarke, Using results from field surveys to predict the effect of open windows on thermal comfort and energy use in buildings, Energy and Buildings 39(7)(2007) 823-836.]. In general, the two algorithms lead to similar predictions, but the results suggest that the Yun algorithm better reflects the observed time of day effects on window use (i.e. the increased probability of action on arrival)

    Deep Convolutional Neural Network to Detect J-UNIWARD

    This paper presents an empirical study on applying convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detecting J-UNIWARD, one of the most secure JPEG steganographic method. Experiments guiding the architectural design of the CNNs have been conducted on the JPEG compressed BOSSBase containing 10,000 covers of size 512x512. Results have verified that both the pooling method and the depth of the CNNs are critical for performance. Results have also proved that a 20-layer CNN, in general, outperforms the most sophisticated feature-based methods, but its advantage gradually diminishes on hard-to-detect cases. To show that the performance generalizes to large-scale databases and to different cover sizes, one experiment has been conducted on the CLS-LOC dataset of ImageNet containing more than one million covers cropped to unified size of 256x256. The proposed 20-layer CNN has cut the error achieved by a CNN recently proposed for large-scale JPEG steganalysis by 35%.     Spin Dynamics for the t-J Model

    The spin dynamics at the finite temperature for the t-J model in the underdoped and optimal doped regimes is studied within the fermion-spin theory. It is shown that the dynamical spin structure factor spectrum at the antiferromagnetic wave vector Q=(π,π)Q=(\pi,\pi) are separated as low- and high-frequency parts, respectively, but the high-frequency part is suppressed in the dynamical susceptibility spectrum χ(Q,ω)\chi^{''}(Q,\omega), while the low-frequency part is the temperature dependent, which are in qualitative agreement with the experiments and numerical simulations.Comment: 3 pages, three figures are adde

    A new perspective on the submillimetre galaxy MM 18423+5938 at redshift 3.9296 from radio continuum imaging

    The bright submillimetre (sub-mm) galaxy MM 18423+5938 at redshift 3.9296 has been predicted from mid-infrared and millimetre photometry to have an exceptionally large total infrared (IR) luminosity. We present new radio imaging at 1.4 GHz with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope that is used to determine a radio-derived total IR luminosity for MM 18423+5938 via the well established radio-far-infrared correlation. The flux density is found to be S_1.4 GHz = 217 +/- 37 \mu Jy, which corresponds to a rest-frame luminosity density of L_1.4 GHz = 2.32 +/- 0.40 x 10^25 / u W / Hz, where u is the magnification from a probable gravitational lens. The radio-derived total IR luminosity and star-formation rate are L_8-1000 \mu m = 5.6^+4.1_-2.4 x 10^13 / u L_sol and SFR = 9.4^+7.4_-4.9 x 10^3 / u M_sol / yr, respectively, which are ~9 times smaller than those previously reported. These differences are attributed to the IR spectral energy distribution of MM 18423+5938 being poorly constrained by the limited number of reliable photometric data that are currently available, and from a previous misidentification of the object at 70 \mu m. Using the radio derived total IR luminosity as a constraint, the temperature of the cold dust component is found to be T ~ 24^+7_-5 K for a dust emissivity of \beta = 1.5 +/- 0.5. The radio-derived properties of this galaxy are still large given the low excitation temperature implied by the CO emission lines and the temperature of the cold dust. Therefore, we conclude that MM 18423+5938 is probably gravitationally lensed.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
