Superprotonic phase transition of CsHSO4: A molecular dynamics simulation study
The superprotonic phase transition (phase II --> phase I; 414 K) of cesium hydrogen sulfate, CsHSO4, was simulated using molecular dynamics with the "first principles" MSXX force field (FF). The structure, binding energy, and vibrational frequencies of the CsHSO4 monomer, the binding energy of the (H2SO4)2 dimer, and the torsion barrier of the HSO4- ion were determined from quantum mechanical calculations, and the parameters of the Dreiding FF for Cs, S, O, and H adjusted to reproduce these quantities. Each hydrogen atom was treated as bonded exclusively to a single oxygen atom (proton donor), but allowed to form hydrogen bonds to various second nearest oxygen atoms (proton acceptors). Fixed temperature-pressure (NPT) dynamics were employed to study the structure as a function of temperature from 298 to 723 K. In addition, the influence of several force field parameters, including the hydrogen torsional barrier height, hydrogen bond strength, and oxygen charge distribution, on the structural behavior of CsHSO4 was probed. Although the FF does not allow proton migration (i.e., proton jumps) between oxygen atoms, a clear phase transition occurred as demonstrated by a discrete change of unit cell symmetry (monoclinic to tetragonal), cell volume, and molar enthalpy. The dynamics of the HSO4- group reorientational motion also changed dramatically at the transition. The observation of a transition to the expected tetragonal phase using a FF in which protons cannot migrate indicates that proton diffusion does not drive the transition to the superprotonic phase. Rather, high conductivity is a consequence of the rapid reorientations that occur in the high temperature phase. Furthermore, because no input from the superprotonic phase was employed in these simulations, it may be possible to employ MD to hypothesize superprotonic materials
Schwinger-Boson Mean-Field Theory of Mixed-Spin Antiferromagnet
The Schwinger-boson mean-field theory is used to study the three-dimensional
antiferromagnetic ordering and excitations in compounds , a large
family of quasi-one-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnet. To investigate
magnetic properties of these compounds, we introduce a three-dimensional
mixed-spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model based on experimental results for
the crystal structure of . This model can explain the experimental
discovery of coexistence of Haldane gap and antiferromagnetic long-range order
below N\'{e}el temperature. Properties such as the low-lying excitations,
magnetizations of and rare-earth ions, N\'{e}el temperatures of different
compounds, and the behavior of Haldane gap below the N\'{e}el temperature are
investigated within this model, and the results are in good agreement with
neutron scattering experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Seyfert's Sextet: A Slowly Dissolving Stephan's Quintet?
We present a multiwavelength study of the highly evolved compact galaxy group
known as Seyfert's Sextet (HCG79: SS). We interpret SS as a 2-3 Gyr more
evolved analog of Stephan's Quintet (HCG92: SQ). We postulate that SS formed by
sequential acquisition of 4-5 primarily late-type field galaxies. Four of the
five galaxies show an early-type morphology which is likely the result of
secular evolution driven by gas stripping. Stellar stripping has produced a
massive/luminous halo and embedded galaxies that are overluminous for their
size. These are interpreted as remnant bulges of the accreted spirals. H79d
could be interpreted as the most recent intruder being the only galaxy with an
intact ISM and uncertain evidence for tidal perturbation. In addition to
stripping activity we find evidence for past accretion events. H79b (NGC6027)
shows a strong counter-rotating emission line component interpreted as an
accreted dwarf spiral. H79a shows evidence for an infalling component of gas
representing feedback or possible cross fueling by H79d. The biggest challenge
to this scenario involves the low gas fraction in the group. If SS formed from
normal field spirals then much of the gas is missing. Finally, despite its
advanced stage of evolution, we find no evidence for major mergers and infer
that SS (and SQ) are telling us that such groups coalesce via slow dissolution.Comment: 70 pages, 19 figures, 15 tables - accepted for publication in the

Radio Supernova SN 1998bw and Its Relation to GRB 980425
SN 1998bw is an unusual Type Ic supernova that may be associated with the
-ray burst GRB 980425. We use a synchrotron self-absorption model for
its radio emission to deduce that the synchrotron-emitting gas is expanding
into a circumstellar medium of approximately density profile, at a
speed comparable to the speed of light. We assume that the efficiencies of
production of relativistic electrons and magnetic field are constant through
the evolution. The circumstellar density is consistent with that expected
around the massive star core thought to be the progenitor of SN 1998bw. The
explosion energy in material moving with velocity is ergs, with some preference for the high values. The rise in
the radio light curves observed at days 20-40 is inferred to be the result of a
rise in the energy of the blast wave by a factor . Interaction with a
jump in the ambient density is not consistent with the observed evolution. We
infer that the boost in energy is from a shell of matter from the explosion
that catches up with the decelerating shock front. Both the high explosion
energy and the nature of the energy input to the blast wave are difficult to
reconcile with energy input from the shock-accelerated high velocity ejecta
from a supernova. The implication is that there is irregular energy input from
a central engine, which is the type of model invoked for normal -ray
bursts. The link between SN 1998bw and GRB 980425 is thus strengthened.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, revised version to appear in Ap
Angle-dependence of the Hall effect in HgBa2CaCu2O6 thin films
Superconducting compounds of the family Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O have been the subject
of intense study since the current record-holder for the highest critical
temperature of a superconductor belongs to this class of materials. Thin films
of the compound with two adjacent copper-oxide layers and a critical
temperature of about 120 K were prepared by a two-step process that consists of
the pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and the subsequent annealing in
mercury-vapor atmosphere. Like some other high-temperature superconductors,
Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O exhibits a specific anomaly of the Hall effect, a double-sign
change of the Hall coefficient close to the superconducting transition. We have
investigated this phenomenon by measurements of the Hall effect at different
angles between the magnetic field direction and the crystallographic c-axis.
The results concerning the upper part of the transition, where the first sign
change occurs, are discussed in terms of the renormalized fluctuation model for
the Hall conductivity, adapted through the field rescaling procedure in order
to take into account the arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.

Inversion formula and Parsval theorem for complex continuous wavelet transforms studied by entangled state representation
In a preceding Letter (Opt. Lett. 32, 554 (2007)) we have proposed complex
continuous wavelet transforms (CCWTs) and found Laguerre--Gaussian mother
wavelets family. In this work we present the inversion formula and Parsval
theorem for CCWT by virtue of the entangled state representation, which makes
the CCWT theory complete. A new orthogonal property of mother wavelet in

Early Science with the Large Millimetre Telescope: Molecules in the Extreme Outflow of a proto-Planetary Nebula
Extremely high velocity emission likely related to jets is known to occur in
some proto-Planetary Nebulae. However, the molecular complexity of this
kinematic component is largely unknown. We observed the known extreme outflow
from the proto-Planetary Nebula IRAS 16342-3814, a prototype water fountain, in
the full frequency range from 73 to 111 GHz with the RSR receiver on the Large
Millimetre Telescope. We detected the molecules SiO, HCN, SO, and CO.
All molecular transitions, with the exception of the latter are detected for
the first time in this source, and all present emission with velocities up to a
few hundred km s. IRAS 16342-3814 is therefore the only source of this
kind presenting extreme outflow activity simultaneously in all these molecules,
with SO and SiO emission showing the highest velocities found of these species
in proto-Planetary Nebulae. To be confirmed is a tentative weak SO component
with a FWHM 700 km s. The extreme outflow gas consists of dense
gas (n 10--10 cm), with a mass larger than
0.02--0.15 M. The relatively high abundances of SiO and SO may
be an indication of an oxygen-rich extreme high velocity gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical

Early Science with the Large Millimeter Telescope: an energy-driven wind revealed by massive molecular and fast X-ray outflows in the Seyfert Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544
We report on the coexistence of powerful gas outflows observed in millimeter
and X-ray data of the Radio-Loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544.
Thanks to the large collecting power of the Large Millimeter Telescope, a
prominent line arising from the 12CO(1-0) transition was revealed in recent
observations of this source. The complex profile is composed by a narrow
double-peak line and a broad wing. While the double-peak structure may be
arising in a disk of molecular material, the broad wing is interpreted as the
signature of a massive outflow of molecular gas with an approximate bulk
velocity of -660 km/s. This molecular wind is likely associated to a
multi-component X-ray Ultra-Fast Outflow with velocities reaching up to ~0.1c
and column densities in the range 10^{21-23.9} cm^-2 that was reported in the
source prior to the LMT observations. The momentum load estimated in the two
gas phases indicates that within the observational uncertainties the outflow is
consistent with being propagating through the galaxy and sweeping up the gas
while conserving its energy. This scenario, which has been often postulated as
a viable mechanism of how AGN feedback takes place, has so far been observed
only in ULIRGs sources. IRAS 17020+4544 with bolometric and infrared luminosity
respectively of 5X10^{44} erg/s and 1.05X10^{11} L_sun appears to be an example
of AGN feedback in a NLSy1 Galaxy (a low power AGN). New proprietary
multi-wavelength data recently obtained on this source will allow us to
