Intelligent Omni-Surfaces Aided Wireless Communications: Does the Reciprocity Hold?

Intelligent omni-surfaces (IOS) have attracted great attention recently due to its potential to achieve full-dimensional communications by simultaneously reflecting and refracting signals toward both sides of the surface. However, it still remains an open question whether the reciprocity holds between the uplink and downlink channels in the IOS-aided wireless communications. In this work, we first present a physics-compliant IOS related channel model, based on which the channel reciprocity is investigated. We then demonstrate the angle-dependent electromagnetic response of the IOS element in terms of both incident and departure angles. This serves as the key feature of IOS that drives our analytical results on beam non-reciprocity. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to verify our theoretical analyses.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Colistin is considered to be an antimicrobial of last-resort for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. The recent global dissemination of mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes is an urgent public health threat. An accurate estimate of the global prevalence of mcr genes, their reservoirs and the potential pathways for human transmission are required to implement control and prevention strategies, yet such data are lacking. Publications from four English (PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Web of Science) and two Chinese (CNKI and WANFANG) databases published between 18 November 2015 and 30 December 2018 were identified. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the prevalence of mcr genes in bacteria isolated from humans, animals, the environment and food products were investigated. A total of 974 publications were identified. 202 observational studies were included in the systematic review and 71 in the meta-analysis. mcr genes were reported from 47 countries across six continents and the overall average prevalence was 4.7% (0.1-9.3%). China reported the highest number of mcr-positive strains. Pathogenic Escherichia coli (54%), isolated from animals (52%) and harboring an IncI2 plasmid (34%) were the bacteria with highest prevalence of mcr genes. The estimated prevalence of mcr-1 pathogenic E. coli was higher in food-animals than in humans and food products, which suggests a role for foodborne transmission. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of prevalence of the mcr gene by source, organism, genotype and type of plasmid

Dynamic response of continuous beams with discrete viscoelastic supports under sinusoidal loading

    Get PDF
Analysis of vibrations of continuous beams with discrete viscoelastic supports has been established through theoretical modeling and a finite element analysis. The theoretical model is based on the Euler-Bernoulli theory, and the Ritz approach was employed to obtain numerical results from which the attenuation of the beam's vibration was obtained. In parallel, a finite element analysis was carried out in ABAQUS using 3D beam elements. It is shown that the results of theoretical calculation agree well with those of the finite element analysis. Both models were applied to explore geometric and design variations, and then to a full model of a bridge expansion unit as an application example. The vibration of the beams in the design, the influence of the stiffness and the viscous damping coefficient of the supports were discussed, demonstrating the models' usefulness in helping with design optimization. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd

Background: Environmental and occupational exposure to arsenic is a major public health concern. Although it has been identified as a human carcinogen, the molecular mechanism underlying the arsenic-induced carcinogenesis is not well understood. Objectives: We aimed to determine the role and mechanisms of miRNAs in arsenic-induced tumor angiogenesis and tumor growth. Methods: We utilized an in vitro model in which human lung epithelial BEAS-2B cells were transformed through long-term exposure to arsenic. A human xenograft tumor model was established to assess tumor angiogenesis and tumor growth in vivo. Tube formation assay and chorioallantoic membranes assay were used to assess tumor angiogenesis. Results: We found that miR-199a-5p expression levels were more than 100-fold lower in arsenic-transformed cells than parental cells. Re-expression of miR-199a-5p impaired arsenic-induced angiogenesis and tumor growth through its direct targets HIF-1α and COX-2. We further showed that arsenic induced COX-2 expression through HIF-1 regulation at the transcriptional level. In addition, we demonstrated that reactive oxygen species are an upstream event of miR-199a-5p/ HIF-1α/COX-2 pathway in arsenic-induced carcinogenesis. Conclusion: The findings establish critical roles of miR-199a-5p and its downstream targets HIF-1/COX-2 in arsenic-induced tumor growth and angiogenesis.Citation: He J, Wang M, Jiang Y, Chen Q, Xu S, Xu Q, Jiang BH, Liu LZ. 2014. Virtualization provides a powerful way to run multiple virtual networks on a shared substrate network, which needs accurate and efficient mathematical models. Virtual network embedding is a challenge in network virtualization. In this paper, considering the degree of convergence when mapping a virtual network onto substrate network, we propose a new embedding algorithm based on topology mapping convergence-degree. Convergence-degree means the adjacent degree of virtual network's nodes when they are mapped onto a substrate network. The contributions of our method are as below. Firstly, we map virtual nodes onto the substrate nodes with the maximum convergence-degree. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm largely enhances the network utilization efficiency and decreases the complexity of the embedding problem. Secondly, we define the load balance rate to reflect the load balance of substrate links. The simulation results show our proposed algorithm achieves better load balance. Finally, based on the feature of star topology, we further improve our embedding algorithm and make it suitable for application in the star topology. The test result shows it gets better performance than previous works

A Coordinated Battery Swapping Service Management Scheme Based on Battery Heterogeneity

The service management based on battery heterogeneity has become an increasingly important research problem in battery swapping technology. In this paper, with the method of bipartite matching, we first theoretically analyse the offline optimization problem of battery swapping service under battery heterogeneity. Nevertheless, the information of global view used in offline optimization solution cannot be known in advance during real-time operation. To address the disadvantage, an online framework comprising several sub-procedures is proposed for heterogeneous battery implementation. Firstly, by incorporating battery swapping station (BSS) local status such as charging and waiting queue of heterogeneous batteries, a charging slot allocation mechanism is designed. Utilizing the proposed allocation method, the charging priority is determined by the proportion of heterogeneous batteries demand, so as to guarantee charging fairness. Secondly, with the help of reservation information, the proposed allocation method can further be improved by predicting the future arrival distribution of heterogeneous types of electric vehicles. Thirdly, according to the service demand prediction based on long short-term memory neural network, joint optimization of BSS-selection and charging cost can be achieved by charging power adjustment. Simulation results indicate the desirable performance of proposed scheme in balancing the demands of multi-party participators

Asynchronous federated and reinforcement learning for mobility-aware edge caching in IoVs

Edge caching is a promising technology to reduce backhaul strain and content access delay in Internet-of-Vehicles (IoVs). It pre-caches frequently-used contents close to vehicles through intermediate roadside units. Previous edge caching works often assume that content popularity is known in advance or obeys simplified models. However, such assumptions are unrealistic, as content popularity varies with uncertain spatial-temporal traffic demands in IoVs. Federated learning (FL) enables vehicles to predict popular content with distributed training. It preserves the training data remain local, thereby addressing privacy concerns and communication resource shortages. This paper investigates a mobility-aware edge caching strategy by exploiting asynchronous FL and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). We first implement a novel asynchronous FL framework for local updates and global aggregation of Stacked AutoEncoder (SAE) models. Then, utilizing the latent features extracted by the trained SAE model, we adopt a hybrid filtering model for predicting and recommending popular content. Furthermore, we explore intelligent caching decisions after content prediction. Based on the formulated Markov Decision Process (MDP) problem, we propose a DRL-based solution, and adopt neural network-based parameter approximations for the curse of dimensionality in RL. Extensive simulations are conducted based on real-world data trajectory. Especially, our proposed method outperforms FedAvg, LRU, and NoDRL, and the edge hit rate is improved by roughly 6%, 21%, and 15%, respectively, when the cache capacity reaches 350 MB

OBJECTIVE: To examine cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality burden attributable to ambient temperature; to estimate effect modification of this burden by gender, age and education level. METHODS: We obtained daily data on temperature and CVD mortality from 15 Chinese megacities during 2007-2013, including 1,936,116 CVD deaths. A quasi-Poisson regression combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to estimate the temperature-mortality association for each city. Then, a multivariate meta-analysis was used to derive the overall effect estimates of temperature at the national level. Attributable fraction of deaths were calculated for cold and heat (ie, temperature below and above minimum-mortality temperatures, MMTs), respectively. The MMT was defined as the specific temperature associated to the lowest mortality risk. RESULTS: The MMT varied from the 70th percentile to the 99th percentile of temperature in 15 cities, centring at 78 at the national level. In total, 17.1% (95% empirical CI 14.4% to 19.1%) of CVD mortality (330,352 deaths) was attributable to ambient temperature, with substantial differences among cities, from 10.1% in Shanghai to 23.7% in Guangzhou. Most of the attributable deaths were due to cold, with a fraction of 15.8% (13.1% to 17.9%) corresponding to 305,902 deaths, compared with 1.3% (1.0% to 1.6%) and 24,450 deaths for heat. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasises how cold weather is responsible for most part of the temperature-related CVD death burden. Our results may have important implications for the development of policies to reduce CVD mortality from extreme temperatures

    RIS-based IMT-2030 Testbed for MmWave Multi-stream Ultra-massive MIMO Communications

As one enabling technique of the future sixth generation (6G) network, ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) can support high-speed data transmissions and cell coverage extension. However, it is hard to realize the ultra-massive MIMO via traditional phased arrays due to unacceptable power consumption. To address this issue, reconfigurable intelligent surface-based (RIS-based) antennas are an energy-efficient enabler of the ultra-massive MIMO, since they are free of energy-hungry phase shifters. In this article, we report the performances of the RIS-enabled ultra-massive MIMO via a project called Verification of MmWave Multi-stream Transmissions Enabled by RIS-based Ultra-massive MIMO for 6G (V4M), which was proposed to promote the evolution towards IMT-2030. In the V4M project, we manufacture RIS-based antennas with 1024 one-bit elements working at 26 GHz, based on which an mmWave dual-stream ultra-massive MIMO prototype is implemented for the first time. To approach practical settings, the Tx and Rx of the prototype are implemented by one commercial new radio base station and one off-the-shelf user equipment, respectively. The measured data rate of the dual-stream prototype approaches the theoretical peak rate. Our contributions to the V4M project are also discussed by presenting technological challenges and corresponding solutions.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to be published in IEEE Wireless Communication
