Search for heavy neutral lepton production in K+ decays to positrons

    Get PDF
A search for heavy neutral lepton (N) production in K+→e+N decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element |Ue4|^2 are established at the level of 10^−9 over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144-462 MeV/c^2, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The |Ue4|^2 range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/c^2

An investigation of the very rare K+ → π+ vv¯ decay

The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the K+→π+ν ̄ν mode from a sample of K+ decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389±0.024)×10−10, corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4±1.0)×10−11. Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78×10−10 for the K+→π+ν ̄ν branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of (0.48+0.72−0.48)×10−10, are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements

Development of a new CEDAR for kaon identification at the NA62 experiment at CERN

    Get PDF
The NA62 experiment at CERN utilises a differential Cherenkov counter with achromatic ring focus (CEDAR) for tagging kaons within an unseparated monochromatic beam of charged hadrons. The CEDAR-H detector was developed to minimise the amount of material in the path of the beam by using hydrogen gas as the radiator medium. The detector was shown to satisfy the kaon tagging requirements in a test-beam before installation and commissioning at the experiment. The CEDAR-H performance was measured using NA62 data collected in 2023

New measurement of the radiative decay Ke3g at the NA62 experiment at CERN

    Get PDF
The NA62 experiment at CERN reports new results from the study of the radiative kaon decay K+→π0e+νγ (Ke3γ ), using a data sample recorded in 2017 and 2018. Preliminary results with the most precise measurement of the Ke3γ branching ratio, and a T-asymmetry measurement in the Ke3γ decay, are presented

Search for lepton number and flavour violation in K+ and pi0 decays

    Get PDF
The NA62 experiment at CERN collected a large sample of charged kaon decays into final states with multiple charged particles in 2016-2018. This sample provides sensitivities to rare decays with branching ratios as low as 10 −11 . Searches for the lepton number violating K + → π − µ + e+ decay and the lepton flavour violating K + → π + µ − e + and π 0 → µ − e + decays are reported. No evidence for these decays is found and upper limits of the branching ratios are obtained at 90% confidence level. These results improve by one order of magnitude over previous results for these decay modes

Search for K+ decays to a muon and invisible particles

    Get PDF
The NA62 experiment at CERN reports searches for K+ → μ+N and K+ → μ+νX decays, where N and X are massive invisible particles, using the 2016–2018 data set. The N particle is assumed to be a heavy neutral lepton, and the results are expressed as upper limits of O(10−8) of the neutrino mixing parameter |Uμ4|2 for N masses in the range 200–384 MeV/c2 and lifetime exceeding 50 ns. The X particle is considered a scalar or vector hidden sector mediator decaying to an invisible final state, and upper limits of the decay branching fraction for X masses in the range 10–370 MeV/c2 are reported for the first time, ranging from O(10−5) to O(10−7). An improved upper limit of 1.0×10−6 is established at 90% CL on the K+ → μ+ννν¯ branching fraction

Change in aggregate structure of various soil types during the succession of abandoned lands

A comparative analysis of the changes in the aggregate structure in various types of soils (Sod-podzolic, Gray forest, and Chernozems) during their postagrogenic evolution was carried out. The study plots included: sod-podzolic soils -plowland, laylands abandoned 8, 13, 35 years ago and a secondary forest (~100 years); gray forest soils -plowland, laylands abandoned 6,15 and 30 years ago and a secondary forest of 60 years; сhernozems-plowland and layland abandoned 10, 15, 26 and 81 years ago. The geobotanical studies have shown that the withdrawal of soils from agricultural use causes changes in species composition, increase of biodiversity, and a gradual recovery of climax communities, which are attributed for specific natural climatic zones. Along with vegetation succession, we observed the increase in the total carbon content in the upper part of the former arable layer (0-10 cm) in all studied soils. However, the trend becomes weaker from northern to southern climatic zones in the following sequence: Sod-podzolic soil > Gray forest soil >Chernozems ordinary. It was found that the content of macroaggregates increases authentically in the surface layers of all of the investigated soils from cropland to abandoned and forest soils during the self-restoration of Gray forest soils and Chernozems while the number of micro-aggregates, on the contrary, decreases. In all studied chronosequences, we observed the increase of the weighed mean diameter of the aggregates and the structure coefficients. The most pronounced changes in the aggregate structure were observed in the chronosequence, formed on Gray forest soils, while the weakest alterations were typical for the Sod-podzolic soils of the southern taiga

Removal of VOCs by Ozone: n-Alkane Oxidation under Mild Conditions

    No full text
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have a negative effect on both humans and the environment; therefore, it is crucial to minimize their emission. The conventional solution is the catalytic oxidation of VOCs by air; however, in some cases this method requires relatively high temperatures. Thus, the oxidation of short-chain alkanes, which demonstrate the lowest reactivity among VOCs, starts at 250–350 °C. This research deals with the ozone catalytic oxidation (OZCO) of alkanes at temperatures as low as 25–200 °C using an alumina-supported manganese oxide catalyst. Our data demonstrate that oxidation can be significantly accelerated in the presence of a small amount of O3. In particular, it was found that n-C4H10 can be readily oxidized by an air/O3 mixture over the Mn/Al2O3 catalyst at temperatures as low as 25 °C. According to the characterization data (SEM-EDX, XRD, H2-TPR, and XPS) the superior catalytic performance of the Mn/Al2O3 catalyst in OZCO stems from a high concentration of Mn2O3 species and oxygen vacancies
