    Graduation Hat Microphone for Waterproof Top Port Microphones

    Small form factor consumer electronic (CE) devices such Echo Buds and Echo Loop with microphone functions are often required to be waterproof. Integrating waterproof feature at the microphone component level enables consistent audio performance and simplified product design. However, integrating the membrane on the small footprint of the microphone while maintaining the desired audio and water resistance performance has been a big challenge. This paper describes a “Graduation Hat” microphone lid technology to integrate a reactive waterproof acoustic membrane with less than 4dB additional acoustic attenuation compared to the same microphone without the membrane while providing 5atm waterproofing. Thereby enabling a more sleek design, consistent audio performance and simplified device level microphone integration

    Multi-LexSum: Real-World Summaries of Civil Rights Lawsuits at Multiple Granularities

    With the advent of large language models, methods for abstractive summarization have made great strides, creating potential for use in applications to aid knowledge workers processing unwieldy document collections. One such setting is the Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse (CRLC) (https://clearinghouse.net),which posts information about large-scale civil rights lawsuits, serving lawyers, scholars, and the general public. Today, summarization in the CRLC requires extensive training of lawyers and law students who spend hours per case understanding multiple relevant documents in order to produce high-quality summaries of key events and outcomes. Motivated by this ongoing real-world summarization effort, we introduce Multi-LexSum, a collection of 9,280 expert-authored summaries drawn from ongoing CRLC writing. Multi-LexSum presents a challenging multi-document summarization task given the length of the source documents, often exceeding two hundred pages per case. Furthermore, Multi-LexSum is distinct from other datasets in its multiple target summaries, each at a different granularity (ranging from one-sentence "extreme" summaries to multi-paragraph narrations of over five hundred words). We present extensive analysis demonstrating that despite the high-quality summaries in the training data (adhering to strict content and style guidelines), state-of-the-art summarization models perform poorly on this task.     Synergism between Inositol Polyphosphates and TOR Kinase Signaling in Nutrient Sensing, Growth Control, and Lipid Metabolism in Chlamydomonas

    The networks that govern carbon metabolism and control intracellular carbon partitioning in photosynthetic cells are poorly understood. Target of Rapamycin (TOR) kinase is a conserved growth regulator that integrates nutrient signals and modulates cell growth in eukaryotes, though the TOR signaling pathway in plants and algae has yet to be completely elucidated. We screened the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using insertional mutagenesis to find mutants that conferred hypersensitivity to the TOR inhibitor rapamycin. We characterized one mutant, vip1-1, that is predicted to encode a conserved inositol hexakisphosphate kinase from the VIP family that pyrophosphorylates phytic acid (InsP6) to produce the low abundance signaling molecules InsP7 and InsP8. Unexpectedly, the rapamycin hypersensitive growth arrest of vip1-1 cells was dependent on the presence of external acetate, which normally has a growth-stimulatory effect on Chlamydomonas. vip1-1 mutants also constitutively overaccumulated triacylglycerols (TAGs) in a manner that was synergistic with other TAG inducing stimuli such as starvation. vip1-1 cells had reduced InsP7 and InsP8, both of which are dynamically modulated in wild-type cells by TOR kinase activity and the presence of acetate.     Chemical abundances and ages of the bulge stars in APOGEE high-velocity peaks

    A cold high-velocity (HV, \sim 200 km/s) peak was first reported in several Galactic bulge fields based on the APOGEE commissioning observations. Both the existence and the nature of the high-velocity peak are still under debate. Here we revisit this feature with the latest APOGEE DR13 data. We find that most of the low latitude bulge fields display a skewed Gaussian distribution with a HV shoulder. However, only 3 out of 53 fields show distinct high-velocity peaks around 200 km/s. The velocity distribution can be well described by Gauss-Hermite polynomials, except the three fields showing clear HV peaks. We find that the correlation between the skewness parameter (h3h_{3}) and the mean velocity (vˉ\bar{v}), instead of a distinctive HV peak, is a strong indicator of the bar. It was recently suggested that the HV peak is composed of preferentially young stars. We choose three fields showing clear HV peaks to test this hypothesis using the metallicity, [α\alpha/M] and [C/N] as age proxies. We find that both young and old stars show HV features. The similarity between the chemical abundances of stars in the HV peaks and the main component indicates that they are not systematically different in terms of chemical abundance or age. In contrast, there are clear differences in chemical space between stars in the Sagittarius dwarf and the bulge stars.     On the Stratospheric Chemistry of Midlatitude Wildfire Smoke

    Massive Australian wildfires lofted smoke directly into the stratosphere in the austral summer of 2019/20. The smoke led to increases in optical extinction throughout the midlatitudes of the southern hemisphere that rivalled substantial volcanic perturbations. Previous studies have assumed that the smoke became coated with sulfuric acid and water and would deplete the ozone layer through heterogeneous chemistry on those surfaces, as is routinely observed following volcanic enhancements of the stratospheric sulfate layer. Here, observations of extinction and reactive nitrogen species from multiple independent satellites that sampled the smoke region are compared to one another and to model calculations. The data display a strong decrease in reactive nitrogen concentrations with increased aerosol extinction in the stratosphere, which is a known fingerprint for key heterogeneous chemistry on sulfate/H2O particles (specifically the hydrolysis of N2O5 to form HNO3). This chemical shift affects not only reactive nitrogen but also chlorine and reactive hydrogen species and is expected to cause midlatitude ozone layer depletion. Comparison of the model ozone to observations suggests that N2O5 hydrolysis contributed to reduced ozone, but additional chemical and/or dynamical processes are also important. These findings suggest that if wildfire smoke injection into the stratosphere increases sufficiently in frequency and magnitude as the world warms due to climate change, ozone recovery under the Montreal Protocol could be impeded, at least sporadically. Modeled austral midlatitude total ozone loss was about 1% in March 2020, which is significant compared to expected ozone recovery of about 1% per decade

    Mid-infrared (mid-IR) variability in young stellar objects (YSOs) is driven by several physical mechanisms, which produce a variety of amplitudes and light curve shapes. One of these mechanisms, variable disk accretion is predicted by models of episodic accretion to drive secular variability, including in the mid-IR. Because the largest accretion bursts are rare, adding new objects to the YSO eruptive variable class aids our understanding of the episodic accretion phenomenon and its possible impact on stellar and planetary formation. A previous analysis of 6.5 yr of NeoWISE light curves (3-5 μ\mum) of ~7000 nearby YSOs found an increase in the fraction of variability and variability amplitude for objects at younger stages of evolution. To help interpret these light curves, we have obtained low- and high-resolution near-IR spectra of 78 objects from this sample of YSOs. In this work, we present the analysis of nine nearby YSOs (d<<1 kpc) that show the characteristics of known classes of eruptive variable YSOs. We find one FUor-like source, one EX Lupi-type object, and six YSOs with mixed characteristics, or V1647 Ori-like objects. The varied characteristics observed in our sample are consistent with recent discoveries of eruptive YSOs. We discuss how a wide range in YSO outburst parameters (central mass, maximum accretion rate during outburst, evolutionary stage and/or instability leading to the outburst) may play a significant role in the observed spectro-photometric properties of YSO outbursts.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS on 14 March 202

    What guidance are researchers given on how to present network meta-analyses to end-users such as policymakers and clinicians? A systematic review

Consideration should be given to identifying optimal approaches to presenting NMAs that help clarify analyses. It is unclear what guidance researchers currently have on how to present and tailor NMAs to different end-users. Methods: A systematic review of NMA guidelines was conducted to identify guidance on how to present NMAs. Electronic databases and supplementary sources were searched for NMA guidelines. Presentation format details related to sample formats, target audiences, data sources, analysis methods and results were extracted and frequencies tabulated. Guideline quality was assessed following criteria developed for clinical practice guidelines. Results: Seven guidelines were included. Current guidelines focus on how to conduct NMAs but provide limited guidance to researchers on how to best present analyses to different end-users. None of the guidelines provided reporting templates. Few guidelines provided advice on tailoring presentations to different end-users, such as policymakers. Available guidance on presentation formats focused on evidence networks, characteristics of individual trials, comparisons between direct and indirect estimates and assumptions of heterogeneity and/or inconsistency. Some guidelines also provided examples of figures and tables that could be used to present information. Conclusions: Limited guidance exists for researchers on how best to present NMAs in an accessible format, especially for non-technical end-users such as policymakers and clinicians. NMA guidelines may require further integration with end-users' needs, when NMAs are used to support healthcare policy and practice decisions.     Just as the body survives by ingesting negative entropy, so the mind survives by ingesting information. In a very general sense, all higher organisms are informavores. The study of active information search is in the midst of a renaissance. Psychological research from diverse areas ranging from developmental psychology This symposium aims to bring together leading experts in this area to discuss how active information foraging can be understood from a diverse set of perspectives within cognitive science. Key themes include how prior knowledge influences search (Markant &amp; Gureckis), how information and reward interact to determine choice (Meder &amp; Nelson), developmental patterns in information seeking behavior (Nelson et al.), information foraging in complex sensemaking tasks (Pirolli), and the allocation of attention during statistical word learning (Yu). While each represents a distinct area of research, all discussants in the symposium share a core approach of applying computational models to understand information search in humans. The symposium should appeal to a broad set of attendees including educators, developmental psychologists, cognitive modelers, and computer scientists. The influence of priors on sequential search decisions - Doug Markant and Todd Gureckis Normative models of information acquisition predict that people&apos;s search decisions should be strongly influenced by their prior beliefs, which capture the set of alternative hypotheses they are considering. In the present experiments we tested whether people adjusted their information search behavior in response to sequential changes in the prior. Participants played a search game in which they had to identify the shape and location of multiple hidden targets in a display (similar to the board game Battleship). During the task they were told that the set of possible shapes had changed, and the key question was whether they would adjust their search decisions according to the predictions of a normative model. Manipulations of the prior included changes in the frequency of certain classes of targets as well as the introduction of higherorder constraints (e.g., that all targets would have the same shape). The results showed that an individual&apos;s prior could be recovered from their sequences of search decisions, but that there were notable differences in their ability to adjust to certain changes in the hypothesis space, an effect that is not predicted by the normative model. We discuss the implications of these findings for how people generate and represent hypotheses during the course of information foraging.
