This paper aims to interpret Vygotsky \u27s abstract theory in a concrete mathematical context. Based on cultural-historical perspective Vygotsky stresses the importance of psychological tools in the development of human behavior. Through the interviewing and observing fraction lessons the researcher draws two conclusions: Both of the learning material and the fraction symbols function as psychological tools but they have dlfference in some levels; Kanako, a third grader, developed concepts ofequivalent fractions mediated by fraction signs in a class, but it is not a real concept.the 30th Annual Meeting of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, PME30, in Prague from 16 – 21 July, 200

Catalytic performance and QXAFS analysis of Ni catalysts modified with Pd for oxidative steam reforming of methane

Pd–Ni bimetallic catalysts prepared by co-impregnation and sequential impregnation methods were compared in the catalytic performance in oxidative steam reforming of methane. The sequential impregnation was more effective to the suppression of hot spot formation. According to the structural analysis by in situ quick-scanning X-ray absorption fine structure (QXAFS) during the temperature programmed reduction, the sequential impregnation method gave the bimetallic particles with higher Pd surface composition because of the low possibility of the Pd–Ni bond formation. Higher surface composition of Pd with higher reducibility than Ni is connected to the enhancement of the catalyst reducibility and the suppression of the hot spot formation

Art as Peace Education at Dark Museums and Sites in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Southeast Asia

    Get PDF
Art increasingly appears at dark museums and related formal sites to balance the traditional exhibits of war. This article explores how art might contribute a peace education perceptive in differing countries and a globalizing context. Case studies from the United Kingdom, Europe (West and East), and Southeast Asia (Cambodia and Vietnam) are analyzed. The former deploys new technologies and supports wellknown artists who appeal to art markets. Asian curation relies more on creativity, including childrens and victims art. Both deploy artistic devices to symbolize the scale of atrocities and create aesthetic depth—juxtaposition, prominence, perspective, repetition, patterning, and soundscapes. The analysis provides tools and checklists to assist curation and inform artists, and concludes that critical educational processes are as important as the art

Retinoblastoma Found In A New-born Baby

Retinoblastoma is the most common ocular malignancy in children and is usually found at the age at 1 2 years. Diagnosis earlier than the first month of life is rare. Here we report a new born female patient with bilateral retinoblastoma. Her intraocular tumor was already group V of the Reese Ellsworth classification at the age at 2 weeks

Steering the Climate System: Using Inertia to Lower the Cost of Policy

    Get PDF
Conventional wisdom holds that the efficient way to limit warming to a chosen level is to price carbon emissions at a rate that increases exponentially. We show that this “Hotelling” tax on carbon emissions is actually inefficient. The least-cost policy path takes advantage of the climate system’s inertia by growing more slowly than exponentially. Carbon dioxide temporarily overshoots the steady-state level consistent with the temperature limit, and the efficient carbon tax follows an inverse-U-shaped path. Economic models that assume exponentially increasing carbon taxes are overestimating the minimum cost of limiting warming, overestimating the efficient near-term carbon tax, and overvaluing technologies that mature sooner
