    Difference in the color stability of direct and indirect resin composites

    Indirect resin composites are generally regarded to have better color stability than direct resin composites since they possess higher conversion degree. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed at comparing the changes in color (ΔE) and color coordinates (ΔL, Δa and Δb) of one direct (Estelite Sigma: 16 shades) and 2 indirect resin composites (BelleGlass NG: 16 shades; Sinfony: 26 shades) after thermocycling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Resins were packed into a mold and light cured; post-curing was performed on indirect resins. Changes in color and color coordinates of 1-mm-thick specimens were determined after 5,000 cycles of thermocycling on a spectrophotometer.     Bond strength of experimental cyanoacrylate-modified dental glass ionomer cements

    Abstract Glass ionomer cement (GIC) has been successfully used in dental field for more than 40 years. Despite numerous advantages of GIC, low bond strength and slow setting rate limited conventional GICs for use only at low stress-bearing areas. To improve bond strength to tooth, two kinds of cyanoacrylates such as ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (EC) and allyl 2-cyanoacrylate (AC) were added in a commercial GIC. Changes in setting time of cyanoacrylate-modified GICs (CMGICs) according to the concentration of cyanoacrylates and/or p-toluene sulfonic acid (TSA) was investigated using a rheometer. Shear bond strength to human dentin was measured. Biocompatibility was determined by the viability of fibroblasts. Optimal concentrations for EC and TSA were 5-10% of the GIC powder and 30% of the GIC liquid, respectively. EC-based CMGIC showed twofold increase of initial bond strength compared with conventional GIC. Also, AC-based CMGIC showed three times higher bond strength and similar biocompatibility compared with the GIC. Therefore, CMGIC materials can be widely applied in dental adhesive restoration field because they showed improved bond strength and proper setting time

    Conference at the Korean Space Science Society, April 24-26 2013, Jeju island, KoreaNear-Earth asteroid (NEA) 162173 (1999 JU3) (hereafter 1999 JU3) is the primary target of JAXA's Hayabusa 2 mission and also a backup target of NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, not only because of its accessibility but also because it would be the first C-type asteroid for exploration missions. Knowing the information about spin status, such as rotational period, the ecliptic longitude and latitude of the pole is essential for the design of mission sequence such as the remote sensing observation. In order to get the physical properties of 1999 JU3, a total of 75 days ground-based observations at various geometries were carried out during 2007 - 2012 apparitions. Observations in the thermal infrared were also conducted with the Subaru, Akari, and Spitzer telescopes. We have analyzed the optical lightcurve of 1999 JU3, and derived a sidereal rotational period of 7.631 ± 0.001 hour. Using the lightcurve inversion method in conjunction with the thermal physical modeling, we determined a nearly spherical shape with a diameter of 823 ± 38 m, a geometric albedo of 0.058 ± 0.003, and a thermal inertia of 231 ± 76 J m-2 s-0.5 K-1. Although the pole orientation of 1999 JU3 is not strongly constrained, the best solution we derived is within 30 degree of (103,-20) in the ecliptic reference frame

    Association of uncoordinated sucking pattern with developmental outcome in premature infants: a retrospective analysis

    Background Stress signals during sucking activity such as nasal flaring, head turning, and extraneous movements of the body have been attributed to incoordination of sucking, swallowing, and respiration (SSR) in premature infants. However, the association of uncoordinated sucking pattern with developmental outcomes has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate whether uncoordinated sucking pattern during bottle-feeding in premature infants is associated with the developmental outcomes at 8–12 and 18–24 months of age (corrected for prematurity). Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and video recordings for the Neonatal Oral-Motor Assessment Scale (NOMAS) of premature infants and divided them into two groups based on the presence or absence of incoordination. The Bayley-III cognition composite scores of the incoordination-positive and incoordination-negative group were compared at 8–12 and 18–24 months of age. Results Seventy premature infants exhibited a disorganized sucking pattern according to the NOMAS. The average Bayley-III cognition composite scores at 8–12 months of age were 92.5 ± 15.6 and 103.0 ± 11.3 for the incoordination-positive (n = 22) and incoordination-negative groups (n = 48), respectively (p = 0.002). The average Bayley-III cognition composite scores at 18–24 months were 90.0 ± 17.9 and 100.7 ± 11.5 for the incoordination-positive (n = 21) and incoordination-negative groups (n = 46), respectively (p = 0.005). A multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the presence of uncoordinated sucking pattern, grade 3 or 4 germinal matrix hemorrhage–intraventricular hemorrhage, and moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia were independently associated with cognitive development at 18–24 months of age. Conclusions Uncoordinated sucking pattern in premature infants was independently associated with a higher risk of abnormal developmental outcome in the cognitive domain of the Bayley-III at both 8–12 and 18–24 months. There may be a need for periodic follow-up and early intervention for developmental delay when incoordination of SSR that results in stress signals on the NOMAS is observed before 40 weeks postmenstrual age

    Sequencing and characterization of Varicella-Zoster virus vaccine strain SuduVax

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox in children and shingles in older people. Currently, live attenuated vaccines based on the Oka strain are available worldwide. In Korea, an attenuated VZV vaccine has been developed from a Korean isolate and has been commercially available since 1994. Despite this long history of use, the mechanism for the attenuation of the vaccine strain is still elusive. We attempted to understand the molecular basis of attenuation mechanism by full genome sequencing and comparative genomic analyses of the Korean vaccine strain SuduVax.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>SuduVax was found to contain a genome that was 124,759 bp and possessed 74 open reading frames (ORFs). SuduVax was genetically most close to Oka strains and these Korean-Japanese strains formed a strong clade in phylogenetic trees. SuduVax, similar to the Oka vaccine strains, underwent T- > C substitution at the stop codon of ORF0, resulting in a read-through mutation to code for an extended form of ORF0 protein. SuduVax also shared certain deletion and insertion mutations in ORFs 17, 29, 56 and 60 with Oka vaccine strains and some clinical strains.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The Korean VZV vaccine strain SuduVax is genetically similar to the Oka vaccine strains. Further comparative genomic and bioinformatics analyses will help to elucidate the molecular basis of the attenuation of the VZV vaccine strains.</p
