    Knowledge and attitudes of university students toward pandemic influenza: a cross-sectional study from Turkey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>During an influenza pandemic, higher education institutions with large populations of young adults can become serious outbreak centers. Since outbreak management is essential to disease control, we aimed to examine university students' knowledge of and attitudes toward the pandemic influenza A/H1N1 and vaccination and other preventive measures.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study was conducted among 402 first year university students at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey between 1<sup>st </sup>and 30<sup>th </sup>of November 2009. Data regarding socio-demographic characteristics of the students, perceptions, level of knowledge and attitudes toward influenza pandemic and prevention measures were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed by the students affiliated with SANITAS, a university club of students in health related sciences.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>25.1% (101/402) of the study group perceived their personal risk of influenza as "high", while 40.5% (163/402) perceived it as "moderate", 20.6% (107/402) viewed it as "low" and 7.7% (31/402) indicated that it was "unknown". The risk perception of males was significantly lower than that of females (p = 0.004) and the risk perception among the students of health sciences was significantly lower than that of students of other sciences (p = 0.037). Within the study group, 72.1% (290/402) indicated that their main information source regarding H1N1 was the mass media. Health sciences students tended to rely more on the internet as an information source than other students (p = 0.015). The vast majority (92.8%; 373/402) of those interviewed indicated that they would not be vaccinated. The major concerns regarding vaccination had to do with the safety and side effects of the vaccine. Most of the participants (343/402, 85.3%) were carrying out one of prevention measures and the vast majority believed that hand washing, face mask and quarantina were effective measures for prevention.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The participants had enough knowledge about H1N1 pandemic about the disease although there were still gaps and confusions in some areas. In the future, when planning management strategies regarding pandemics or outbreaks in higher education institutions, new strategies should be developed to promote positive health behaviour among university students compatible with the international guidelines. Main information source is mass media, so it seems that new policies must be developed to attract attention of students to use different and more scientific-based information sources.</p

    Determination of certain bacterial groups in gut microbiota and endotoxin levels in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

    Background/Aims: In recent years, the role of the gut microbiota has emerged in several diseases. Herein we aimed to determine the fecal microbiota, endotoxin levels, and inflammation markers in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and healthy controls. Materials and Methods: A total of 46 NASH patients and 38 healthy controls were included. NASH patients were diagnosed according to the steatosis, activity, and fibrosis score/fatty liver inhibition of progression algorithm. 16S rRNA gene-targeted specific primers were used for quantification of certain bacterial groups, and a plasmid library was constructed and sequenced in order to determine dominant Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium members in patients and controls. Results: Significantly decreased Akkermansia muciniphila and increased Enterobacteriaceae levels were determined in patients compared to healthy controls even after adjusting for the body mass index (BMI) and age. Patients with >= F2 fibrosis had significantly higher Enterobacteriaceae levels compared to F0-F1 fibrosis. Serum endotoxin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were significantly higher in patients group. According to the sequencing results, L. reuteri, which was one of the dominant Lactobacillus species in the patient group, could not be detected in healthy controls. Bifidobacterium infantis was found in the patients' feces but not in the controls. Conclusion: We demonstrated a BMI and age-independent association between the presence of NASH and levels of A. muciniphila and Enterobacteriaceae as well as increased endotoxin levels. L. reuteri was abundant in the patient group, suggesting that dominant Lactobacillus species should be considered before probiotic treatments

    A histological study of rabbit corneas after transepithelial corneal crosslinking using partial epithelial photoablation or ethanol treatment

    AIM: To evaluate the histological changes after transepithelial corneal crosslinking (CXL) using partial thickness excimer laser ablation or epithelial ethanol application in an experimental rabbit study.METHODS: Right eyes of twenty-four rabbits were studied. Four eyes received total epithelial debridement (group I). Four eyes received partial thickness epithelial ablation with excimer laser (group II). Twelve eyes were treated with different durations (30s and 60s) and concentrations (18% to 48%) of ethanol (group III). Riboflavin was applied for 30min intervals along with topical proparacaine drops with benzalkonium chloride, and 370 nm irradiation was performed for 30min, while riboflavin was instilled every 3min. Four eyes (group IV) received 48% ethanol for 30s without riboflavin and irradiation. Eyes were collected after 24h and examined histologically.RESULTS: All eyes in group I showed keratocyte loss in the superficial 300 µ of corneal storma. In group II, 1-4 layers of epithelium were preserved and no keratocyte loss occurred. In group III, CXL after treatment with ethanol up to 24% concentration and up to 60s revealed no keratocyte loss. CXL after treatment with 48% and higher ethanol concentrations yielded keratocyte loss in the superficial 200 µ to 300 µ of cornea.CONCLUSION: Incomplete excimer laser ablation of the epithelium or treatment with ethanol up to 24% concentration and up to 60s duration yielded no stromal keratocyte loss. To get the same histological appearance seen in epithelial debridement group, partial thickness excimer laser epithelial ablation or ethanol application is not adequate for transepithelial CXL

Besides classical adverse events of this drug class, hepatotoxicity has been described as a frequent side effect. the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of pazopanib on the liver in an experimental rat model. Sixteen Wistar albino rats were divided into 3 groups: experimental toxicity was induced with pazopanib (10 mg/kg) administered for 28 days (group 2) or 56 days (group 3) orally by gavage. Group 1 (control group) received only distilled water. Rats in groups 2 and 3 were sacrificed after the collection of blood and tissue samples on the 28th and 56th days, respectively. We found significant differences in bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehy- drogenase, glucose, triglyceride, very-low-density lipoprotein, and iron values (p 0.050). All rats in the control group had normal histological features; however, none of the rats in groups 2 and 3 showed normal histology. in group 2, we observed mild sinusoidal dilatation, congestion, enlarged Kupffer cells, accumulation of yellow-brown-black pigment in the Kupffer cells and the accumulation of hemosiderin with Prussian blue reaction in the hepatocytes. in group 3, the findings mentioned above were more prominent, and besides these findings focal acinar transformation and macrovesicular steatosis were also observed. in group 3, mild inflammation within the portal areas was observed consisting of lymphocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophils.     In the head and neck mucosa, neuroendocrine carcinomas of the oral cavity is rare. Herein, we present the first report of a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in a 54-year-old man on the right lateral posterior tongue. It is important to remember that although neuroendocrine small cell carcinomas (SCCs) are most commonly seen in the lung, they rarely may arise in the extrapulmonary sites, including salivary glands, as well. As there is not any standard therapeutic regimen already existing, it is important to be aware of and to know how to deal with such rare cases

    The presence of CD40 on carcinoma cells is an important factor for the generation of tumor-specific responses induced by CD40 ligation. In an N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced autochthonous mammary tumor model, we analyzed the immune features of primary tumor cells. Here, CD40 was frequently detected on the primary tumor cultures and selectively expressed on the malignant mammary tissue in vivo. On the other hand, every mammary tumor cell culture had a heterogeneous and reduced expression of proinflammatory TNF alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6 and CXCL1 cytokines compared to normal mammary epithelial cells. Low-efficiency transfection of CD40 ligand (CD40L) gene enhanced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the tumor cells, and strengthened allogeneic immune reactions and costimulatory activity which may help overwhelming suppressive features of the tumor.WoSScopu

    Dual actions of the antioxidant chlorophyllin, a glutathione transferase P1‐1 inhibitor, in tumorigenesis and tumor progression

    Glutathione (GSH) and enzymes related to this antioxidant molecule are often overexpressed in tumor cells and may contribute to drug resistance. Blockade of glutathione transferases (GSTs) has been proposed to potentiate the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs in cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorophyllin that has antioxidant properties, and also interferes with the activity of GST P1-1, on breast cancers in vitro and in vivo. The in vivo studies were conducted using an N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced chemical carcinogenesis model in laboratory rats. DNA damage, GST activity, and GSH levels were determined in liver and tumor tissues. Treatment with chlorophyllin increased the GSH levels in the liver and significantly decreased DNA damage in the blood, liver, and tumor tissues. Even though tumorigenesis was delayed in rats receiving chlorophyllin before MNU injections, once the tumors emerged, the progression of tumor appeared to be faster than in the animals that received the carcinogen only. Out of nine breast cell lines, GST P1-1 expression was detected in MCF-12A, MDA-MB-231, and HCC38. Concomitant incubation with chlorophyllin and docetaxel did not significantly affect cell proliferation and viability. Chlorophyllin displayed genoprotective effects that initially delayed tumorigenesis. However, once the tumors were established, it may act as a promoter that facilitates tumor growth, potentially by a mechanism independent of cell proliferation and viability. Our results underline the pros and cons of antioxidant treatment in cancer, even if it has a capacity to inhibit GST P1-1
