    Coupled Free Vibrations of Liquid in a Three-Dimensional Rectangular Container with an Elastic Cover

    The coupled free vibration of liquid and its elastic cover, such as a plate or a membrane, in a three-dimensional rectangular tank is investigated through an analytical scheme based on velocity potential theory for the flow and the linear elastic theory for the cover. For the fluid domain, the velocity potential is expanded into double cosine series along the longitudinal and transverse direction respectively, with the corresponding eigenvalues determined from the impermeable conditions on the side walls. The vertical modes of the potential are obtained from the Laplace equation. The deflection of rectangular cover is expanded into the same double cosine series to match the potential, together with additional terms for satisfying the edge conditions. The polynomials are used for these additional terms which are then expanded into cosine series. For the expansions of the higher-order derivatives of the deflection, the derivatives of these polynomial terms are expanded into cosine series directly, rather than being obtained through differentiating the cosine series of the deflection, to avoid the non-convergent series. Through imposing the boundary conditions on the fluid-plate interface and edge conditions, an infinite matrix equation for the unknown coefficients can be established. The natural frequencies can be obtained when the determinant of the matrix is zero. In practical computation, the infinite matrix equation is truncated into finite size. Results are first provided for natural frequencies. This is followed by the corresponding natural mode shapes and principal strains distribution on the cover.     A Phase Change Memory Chip Based on TiSbTe Alloy in 40-nm Standard CMOS Technology

    In this letter, a phase change random access memory (PCRAM) chip based on Ti0.4Sb2Te3 alloy material was fabricated in a 40-nm 4-metal level complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The phase change resistor was then integrated after CMOS logic fabrication. The PCRAM was successfully embedded without changing any logic device and process, in which 1.1 V negative-channel metal-oxide semiconductor device was used as the memory cell selector. The currents and the time of SET and RESET operations were found to be 0.2 and 0.5 mA, 100 and 10 ns, respectively. The high speed performance of this chip may highlight the design advantages in many embedded applications

    Investigation of Application of Suction Line Heat Exchanger in R290 Air Conditioner with Small Diameter Copper Tube

    R290 is a potential refrigerant replacing R22 because of its zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and virtually zero Global Warming Potential (GWP). However, R290 is flammable and requires excellent containment to avoid leakage and reduce the risk of fire. The use of small diameter copper tube (5 mm or even smaller) is an effective way to reduce refrigerant charge and thus reduce the risk of fire in the event of a refrigerant leak. However, employing small diameter copper tube will increase pressure drop and consequently reduce system performance. A suction line heat exchanger which employs the low temperature refrigerant in suction line to cool down the refrigerant before expansion value is a potential solution to improve system performance because R290 has low discharge temperature compared with HFC refrigerants (e.g. R22, R410A). This paper presents an investigation of application of a suction line heat exchanger in an R290 air conditioner with small diameter copper tube. A theoretical analysis is proposed at first to investigate the effect of the suction line heat exchanger on capacity and system energy efficiency under variable evaporating and cooling temperatures. A prototype R290 air conditioner with and without a suction line heat exchanger is tested in order to explore the effect of a suction line heat exchanger on system performance and refrigerant charge in real working conditions. Finally, a refrigerant circuit solution for heat pump air conditioners is proposed. The results of theoretical analysis indicate that the capacity and system energy efficiency increase linearly with the heat exchange of the suctionline heat exchanger, and the suction line heat exchanger can improves capacity by up to 12% and system energy efficiency by up to 4% under both cooling and heating modes. This is because the suction line heat exchanger increases the sub-cooling but has less impact on compressor power due to good thermal properties of R290. Further, the evaporating and condensation temperature have insignificant impact on the performance of suction line heat exchanger. The experimental results show that the suction line heat exchanger improves the cooling capacity and system efficiency by 5.3% and 4.5%, respectively. These results agree well with that of the system analysis. The sub-cooling temperature increases 10.2o C and the discharge temperature increases 25.4o C. Further, the suction line heat exchanger reduces the refrigerant charge by as much as 6%. This is because suction line heat exchanger increases the discharge temperature, and thus the superheat region of the condenser increases resulting in less refrigerant in the condenser. Overall, the use of a suction line heat exchanger in a system with small diameter copper tube improves the performance of R290 and more importantly reduces the refrigerant charge

    Wave interaction with multiple adjacent floating solar panels with arbitrary constraints

    The problem of wave interaction with multiple adjacent floating solar panels with arbitrary types and numbers of constraints is considered. All the solar panels are assumed to be homogeneous, with the same physical properties, as well as modeled by using the Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. The motion of the fluid is described by the linear velocity potential theory. The domain decomposition method is employed to obtain the solutions. In particular, the entire fluid domain is divided into two types, the one below the free surface, and the other below elastic plates. The velocity potential in the free surface domain is expressed into a series of eigenfunctions. By contrast, the boundary integral equation and the Green function are employed to construct the velocity potential of fluid beneath the entire elastic cover, with unknowns distributed along two interfaces and jumps of physical parameters of the plates. All these unknowns are solved from the system of linear equations, which is established from the matching conditions of velocity potentials and edge conditions. This approach is confirmed with much higher computational efficiency compared with the one only involving eigenfunction expansion for the fluid beneath each plate. Extensive results and discussions are provided for the reflection and transmission coefficients of water waves, maximum deflection, and principal strain of the elastic plates; especially, the influence of different types and numbers of edge constraints are investigated in detail

    Memory-enhancing effect of Rhodiola rosea L extract on aged mice

    Purpose: The memory-enhancing effects of Rhodiola rosea L. extract (RRLE) on normal aged mice were assessed.Methods: In the open-field test, the effect of RRLE (150 and 300 mg/kg) on mouse locomotive activities was evaluated by investigating the extract’s influence on CAT and AchE activities in the brain tissue of mice.Results: Compared with aged group, high dose of RRLE reduced the total distance (3212.4 ± 123.1 cm, p < 0.05) significantly, increased catalase (CAT) activity (101.4 ± 12.2 U/mg pro, p < 0.05), and inhibited acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) activity (0.94 ± 0.12 U/mg pro, p < 0.05) in the brain tissue of aged mice.Conclusion: The results show that RRLE improves the memory functions of aged mice probably by increasing CAT activity while decreasing AChE activity.Keywords: Rhodiola rosea, Memory function, Catalase, Acetyl cholinesterase, Open-field tes

    Involvement of Glutamate Transporter-1 in Neuroprotection against Global Brain Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Induced by Postconditioning in Rats

    Ischemic postconditioning refers to several transient reperfusion and ischemia cycles after an ischemic event and before a long duration of reperfusion. The procedure produces neuroprotective effects. The mechanisms underlying these neuroprotective effects are poorly understood. In this study, we found that most neurons in the CA1 region died after 10 minutes of ischemia and is followed by 72 hours of reperfusion. However, brain ischemic postconditioning (six cycles of 10 s/10 s reperfusion/re-occlusion) significantly reduced neuronal death. Significant up-regulation of Glutamate transporter-1 was found after 3, 6, 24, 72 hours of reperfusion. The present study showed that ischemic postconditioning decreases cell death and that upregulation of GLT-1 expression may play an important role on this effect

    GRIK3 rs490647 is a Common Genetic Variant between Personality and Subjective Well-being in Chinese Han Population

    Personality and subjective well-being (SWB) have been suggested to be strongly related in previous studies. This study was intended to confirm the relationship between personality and SWB and tried to seek out the genetic variants which underlie both personality and SWB. The subjects were 890 participants from Chinese Han population. We evaluated their personality using the Big Five Inventory (BFI) and used the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) to reflect their SWB. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected from the literature (rs1426371, rs2164273, rs322931, rs3756290, rs490647) and genotyped for genetic association study. We found negative correlations between neuroticism and SWB. On the contrary, extraversion and agreeableness were positively associated with SWB. Three SNPs (rs2164273, rs3756290, rs490647) out of the five were found to connect with personality (extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness and openness to experience) and rs490647 variants of GRIK3 was also associated with SWB. Individuals carrying G allele at this site were predisposed to have lower risk to be neuroticism and greater chance to be extraverted, open and satisfied with their life. In summary, our study revealed that rs490647 might be a good candidate genetic variant for personality and SWB in Chinese Han population
