    Mobile game for the elderly: Bundled Bingo Game

    The aim of this project is to develop a customized Bingo game based on the user interface guidelines that suit the elderly users. This project targeted to improve the cognitive ability of the elderly with the specifically designed gaming features. In this research, qualitative data will be used to analyze the confidence and acceptance level of the elderly on the mobile digital games, as well as to understand how the elderly interacts with current technologies (mobile devices) and the benefit they can gain from the mobile games. User testing, survey, and result analysis have been done with a group of elderly members from D’Happy club in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The results of this project contribute to the development of an elderly friendly mobile game to motivate the elderly’s engagement in mobile gaming, with the will that it could help to delay and decrease the risk of the elderly in developing the Alzheimer’s disease

    Planococcus versutus sp. nov., isolated from soil

    A taxonomic study was performed on a novel Gram-stain-positive, coccus-shaped, orange-pigmented motile bacterium, designated as strain L10.15T. The organism was isolated from a soil sample collected in Lagoon Island (close to Adelaide Island, western Antarctic Peninsula) using a quorum-quenching enrichment medium. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, pH 6–11 and at moderately high salinity (0–15 %, w/v, NaCl), with optimal growth at 26 °C, at pH 7–8 and with 6 % (w/v) NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain L10.15T belonged to the genus Planococcus and was closely related to Planococcus halocryophilus Or1T (99.3 % similarity), Planococcus donghaensis JH1T (99.0 %), Planococcus antarcticus DSM 14505T (98.3 %), Planococcus plakortidis AS/ASP6 (II)T (97.6 %), Planococcus maritimus TF-9T (97.5 %), Planococcus salinarum ISL-6T (97.5 %) and Planococcus kocurii NCIMB 629T (97.5 %). However, the average nucleotide identity-MUMmer analysis showed low genomic relatedness values of 71.1–81.7 % to the type strains of these closely related species of the genus Planococcus . The principal fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c and anteiso-C17 :  0, and the major menaquinones of strain L10.15T were MK-5 (48 %), MK-6 (6 %) and MK-7 (44 %). Polar lipid analysis revealed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and aminophospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.4 mol%. The phenotypic and genotypic data indicate that strain L10.15T represents a novel species of the genus Planococcus , for which the name Planococcus versutus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L10.15T (=DSM 101994T=KACC 18918T)

    The Associations Between Preoperative Anthropometry and Postoperative Outcomes in Infants Undergoing Congenital Heart Surgery

    Aim: We explored the association between preoperative anthropometry and biochemistry, and postoperative outcomes in infants with CHD after cardiac surgery, as infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) often have feeding difficulties and malnutrition. Methodology: This was a retrospective review of infants (≤ 1-year-old) who underwent congenital heart surgery. Preoperative anthropometryin terms of preoperative weight-for-age z-score (WAZ), length-for-age z-score (LAZ), as well as preoperative serum albumin and hemoglobin concentrations, were evaluated against 6-month mortality, and morbidity outcomes including postoperative complications, vasoactive inotrope score, duration of mechanical ventilation, length of stay in the pediatric intensive care unit and in hospital, using the logistic regression or median regression models accounting for infant-level clustering. Results: One hundred and ninety-nine operations were performed in 167 infants. Mean gestational age at birth was 38.0 (SD 2.2) weeks (range 26 to 41 weeks). Thirty (18.0%) infants were born preterm (<37 weeks). The commonest acyanotic and cyanotic lesions were ventricular septal defect (26.3%, 44/167), and tetralogy of Fallot (13.8%, 23/167), respectively. Mean age at cardiac surgery was 94 (SD 95) days. Feeding difficulties, including increased work of breathing during feeding, diaphoresis, choking or coughing during feeding, and inability to complete feeds, was present in 54.3% (108/199) of infants prior to surgery, of which 21.6% (43/199) required tube feeding. The mean preoperative WAZ was−1.31 (SD 1.79). Logistic regression models showed that low preoperative WAZ was associated with increased risk of postoperative complications (odds ratio 1.82; p = 0.02), and 6-month mortality (odds ratio 2.38; p = 0.008) following CHD surgery. There was no meaningful association between the other preoperative variables and other outcomes. Conclusion: More than 50% of infants with CHD undergoing cardiac surgery within the first year of life have feeding difficulties, of which 22% require to be tube-fed.     Psychological Responses and Coping Strategies among Medical Students during Lockdown for The COVID-19 Pandemic in Malaysia

    ntroduction:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was promulgated as a pandemic by the World Health Organi-zation (WHO). In Malaysia, the Movement Control Order (MCO) has been implemented since March coherent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation. This social distancing measure induced fears and caused significant disruptions to our everyday activities, including medical students. Objective(s): We aim to examine the psychological responses of medical students of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) during the MCO and their coping strategies. Methodology: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 245 medical students in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. A self-administered online-based questionnaire comprised of sociodemo-graphics, mental status, and coping strategy was used. The mental status and coping skills were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and Brief COPE questionnaire respectively. IBM SPSS version 22 was used for the data analysis. Results: The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress were 29.8%, 27.3%. and 34.7% respectively. The most commonly used coping strategy was religion (M= 5.62, SD = 2.10) while the least practiced strategy was substance abuse (M = 2.16, SD = .77). In general, the medical students favored approach coping strategies (M = 29.19, SD = 9.27). Pre-clinical students were inclined to use avoidant coping strategies. When comparing coping strategies among both genders, male students coped more significantly with humor, while females students coped more significantly with religion. Medical students who practised approach coping strategies were less likely to develop depression. Conclusion(s): Understanding of coping strategy of the university students helps the authority to strategize psychological interventions during the present pandemic and future disaster

    Combinatorial network of primary and secondary microRNA-driven regulatory mechanisms

    Recent miRNA transfection experiments show strong evidence that miRNAs influence not only their target but also non-target genes; the precise mechanism of the extended regulatory effects of miRNAs remains to be elucidated. A hypothetical two-layer regulatory network in which transcription factors (TFs) function as important mediators of miRNA-initiated regulatory effects was envisioned, and a comprehensive strategy was developed to map such miRNA-centered regulatory cascades. Given gene expression profiles after miRNA-perturbation, along with putative miRNA–gene and TF–gene regulatory relationships, highly likely degraded targets were fetched by a non-parametric statistical test; miRNA-regulated TFs and their downstream targets were mined out through linear regression modeling. When applied to 53 expression datasets, this strategy discovered combinatorial regulatory networks centered around 19 miRNAs. A tumor-related regulatory network was diagrammed as an example, with the important tumor-related regulators TP53 and MYC playing hub connector roles. A web server is provided for query and analysis of all reported data in this article. Our results reinforce the growing awareness that non-coding RNAs may play key roles in the transcription regulatory network. Our strategy could be applied to reveal conditional regulatory pathways in many more cellular contexts

    MiR-223 Suppresses Cell Proliferation by Targeting IGF-1R

    To study the roles of microRNA-223 (miR-223) in regulation of cell growth, we established a miR-223 over-expression model in HeLa cells infected with miR-223 by Lentivirus pLL3.7 system. We observed in this model that miR-223 significantly suppressed the proliferation, growth rate, colony formation of HeLa cells in vitro, and in vivo tumorigenicity or tumor formation in nude mice. To investigate the mechanisms involved, we scanned and examined the potential and putative target molecules of miR-223 by informatics, quantitative PCR and Western blot, and found that insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) was the functional target of miR-223 inhibition of cell proliferation. Targeting IGF-1R by miR-223 was not only seen in HeLa cells, but also in leukemia and hepatoma cells. The downstream pathway, Akt/mTOR/p70S6K, to which the signal was mediated by IGF-1R, was inhibited as well. The relative luciferase activity of the reporter containing wild-type 3′UTR(3′untranslated region) of IGF-1R was significantly suppressed, but the mutant not. Silence of IGF-1R expression by vector-based short hairpin RNA resulted in the similar inhibition with miR-223. Contrarily, rescued IGF-1R expression in the cells that over-expressed miR-223, reversed the inhibition caused by miR-223 via introducing IGF-1R cDNA that didn't contain the 3′UTR. Meanwhile, we also noted that miR-223 targeted Rasa1, but the downstream molecules mediated by Rasa1 was neither targeted nor regulated. Therefore we believed that IGF-1R was the functional target for miR-223 suppression of cell proliferation and its downstream PI3K/Akt/mTOR/p70S6K pathway suppressed by miR-223 was by targeting IGF-1R

    Production of phi mesons at mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC

    We present the first results of meson production in the K^+K^- decay channel from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as measured at mid-rapidity by the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Precision resonance centroid and width values are extracted as a function of collision centrality. No significant variation from the PDG accepted values is observed. The transverse mass spectra are fitted with a linear exponential function for which the derived inverse slope parameter is seen to be constant as a function of centrality. These data are also fitted by a hydrodynamic model with the result that the freeze-out temperature and the expansion velocity values are consistent with the values previously derived from fitting single hadron inclusive data. As a function of transverse momentum the collisions scaled peripheral.to.central yield ratio RCP for the is comparable to that of pions rather than that of protons. This result lends support to theoretical models which distinguish between baryons and mesons instead of particle mass for explaining the anomalous proton yield.Comment: 326 authors, 24 pages text, 23 figures, 6 tables, RevTeX 4.
