We measure 2H(e,e′p)n cross sections at 4-momentum transfers of Q2 = 4.5 ± 0.5   (GeV/c)2 over a range of neutron recoil momenta pr, reaching up to ∼1.0  GeV/c. We obtain data at fixed neutron recoil angles θnq = 35°, 45°, and 75° with respect to the 3-momentum transfer →q. The new data agree well with previous data, which reached pr ∼ 500  MeV/c. At θnq = 35° and 45°, final state interactions, meson exchange currents, and isobar currents are suppressed and the plane wave impulse approximation provides the dominant cross section contribution. We compare the new data to recent theoretical calculations, where we observe a significant discrepancy for recoil momenta pr \u3e 700  MeV/c

Contribution to the Improvement of the Correlation Filter Method for Modal Analysis with a Spatial Light Modulator

Modal decomposition of light is essential to study its propagation properties in waveguides and photonic devices. Modal analysis can be carried out by implementing a computer-generated hologram acting as a match filter in a spatial light modulator. In this work, a series of aspects to be taken into account in order to get the most out of this method are presented, aiming to provide useful operational procedures. First of all, a method for filter size adjustment based on the standard fiber LP-mode symmetry is presented. The influence of the mode normalization in the complex amplitude encoding-inherent noise is then investigated. Finally, a robust method to measure the phase difference between modes is proposed. These procedures are tested by wavefront reconstruction in a conventional few-mode fiber

A significant part of the historic center of Camagüey is a World Heritage Site and, in turn, has a high concentration of the main commercial corridors of the city. As these are considered to be highly central spaces where the public converges, and due to their heritage relevance and deterioration, it was decided to intervene. A comprehensive process of conservation was carried out using the Patrimonial Intervention Methodology developed by CECONS. The deterioration at the urban architectural level and its causes, as well as the degree of protection were identified. In addition, the valid actions to be executed according to buildings and surroundings were determined. As a result, urban compatibility and integrated project management were used in this comprehensive conservation project, which guaranteed the quality of the interventions and the joint participation of the population and institutions, together with a cultural revitalization plan that makes it possible to regain these spaces of coexistence as an expression of citizen identity.

Impact of in vitro HIV infection on human thymic regulatory T cell differentiation

BackgroundThe differentiation and function of immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs) is dictated by the master transcription factor FoxP3. During HIV infection, there is an increase in Treg frequencies in the peripheral blood and lymphoid tissues. This accentuates immune dysfunction and disease progression. Expression of FoxP3 by thymic Tregs (tTregs) is partially controlled by TGF-β. This cytokine also contributes to Treg development in the peripheral blood and lymphoid tissues. Although TGF-β mediates lymphoid tissue fibrosis and peripheral Treg differentiation in HIV-infected individuals, its role in the induction and maintenance of Tregs within the thymus during HIV infection remains unclear.MethodsThymocytes were isolated from fresh human thymic tissues obtained from pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Infection by both R5- and X4-tropic HIV-1 strains and TGF-β treatment of human thymocytes was performed in an in vitro co-culture model with OP9-DL1 cells expressing Notch ligand delta-like 1 without T cell receptor (TCR) activation.ResultsDespite high expression of CCR5 and CXCR4 by tTregs, FoxP3 +  CD3highCD8- thymocytes were much less prone to in vitro infection with R5- and X4-tropic HIV strains compared to FoxP3-CD3highCD8- thymocytes. As expected, CD3highCD4+ thymocytes, when treated with TGF-β1, upregulated CD127 and this treatment resulted in increased FoxP3 expression and Treg differentiation, but did not affect the rate of HIV infection. FoxP3 expression and Treg frequencies remained unchanged following in vitro HIV infection alone or in combination with TGF-β1.ConclusionFoxP3 expression and tTreg differentiation is not affected by in vitro HIV infection alone or the combination of in vitro HIV infection and TGF-β treatment

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis is a worldwide health problem getting a prioritized attention by the Cuban National Health System. To describe the main indicators of the Cuban Tuberculosis Control Program. METHODS: Based on surveillance data from the Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology, the health care network and strategies of the tuberculosis control program were reviewed; incidence rates, case finding indicators, diagnosis and case management were described. RESULTS: Eight subjects with respiratory symptoms were found per 1,000 attending general medical care services. The incidence rates of all tuberculosis types declined from 16.4 in 1995 to 12.0 x 10(5) people in 1999. Pulmonary tuberculosis incidence rate was reduced from 15.1 in1995 to 10.4 x 10(5) in 1999, whereas extrapulmonary tuberculosis had an increment from 1.3 to 1.6 x 10(5) in the same period. Of all new cases, 40-50 % were diagnosed at multispecialty clinics, 67.6% were diagnosed by positive smears, 15.2 % by positive cultures, 13.8 % by clinical and X-rays evidences only; and 0.9 % and 1.5 % were respectively diagnosed by biopsy and necropsy. There was an increase in the incidence rate in the age group 15-64 years in 1996 and 1997 but it declined again in 1998 and 1999. The age group 64 years and over showed a rate reduction from 1995 to 1999. In general, incidence rates diminished in the overall period. The average delay between onset of symptoms and diagnosis improved from 42 days in 1995 to 28.6 days in 1999. CONCLUSIONS: There seems to be a halt in reporting trends of new cases in 1996.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anthelmintic used in an equine ranch in Cuba. The faecal egg count reduction test of Strongyles (FECRT) was used to evaluate albendazole and ivermectin. Thirty-three horses were selected (18 treated with albendazole, 15 treated with ivermectin). The egg count reduction for albendazole was 38% for micronized albendazole and 33% for albendazole sulfoxide. Ivermectin effectiveness was 100%. Subsequently, four horses that showed high counts of eggs after the albendazole treatment were treated with ivermectin on day 17 after the initial deworming to collect resistant nematodes in the faeces. These nematodes were morphologically identified. It was possible to identified 493 specimens: Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cyathostomum catinatum, Cylicostephanus longibursatus, Cylicostephanus goldi and Cylicostephanus minutus which represented 78.5, 7.7, 6.5, 3.9 and 3.4% respectively. This has been the first report for Cylicostephanus minutus in equines in Cuba. It is concluded that at least five of species of cyathostomes were resistant to albendazole.
