    Application of Modified Correction-Factor Analysis to Solvent Extraction in Rectangular Membrane Modules with External Recycle

    [[abstract]]The expressions of mass transfer rate for membrane extraction through a rectangular module with external recycle have been derived under cocurrent-flow, countercurrent-flow and cross-flow operations based on the modified correction-factor analysis coupled with the mass balances. These expressions are explicit and the results can be readily calculated without using try-and-error method, which should be employed in the classical correction-factor analysis for designing heat and mass exchangers. For cross-flow operation, the correction factors are function of flow rate, mass-transfer area, distribution coefficient and overall mass-transfer coefficient, and some values of them are given graphically. Considerable improvement in mass transfer rate is achievable if the devices are operated with recycle, leading to increase the mass transfer coefficient.[[notice]]補正完

    [[abstract]]A design for inserting an absorbing plate to divide the air duct into two channels (the upper and the lower) for double-flow operation in solar air heaters with fins attached over and under the absorbing plate has been investigated both experimentally and analytically. The present work is restricted to the case where the outside air is being heated directly, and the configuration investigated here will have lower collector efficiency if the inlet-air temperature is substantially higher than the ambient temperature because of the far greater potential for heat loss from the top. However, the double-flow device introduced here was designed for creating a solar collector with heat-transfer area double between the absorbing plate and heated air. This advantage may compensate for the heat loss from the top when the inlet-air temperature is higher than the ambient temperature. The agreement of the theoretical predictions with those measured values from the experimental results is fairly good. Considerable improvement in collector efficiency of solar air heaters with fins attached is obtained by employing such a double-flow device, instead of using a single-flow example and operating at the same total flow rate. Both the theoretical predictions and experimental results showed that the optimal fraction of airflow rate in upper and lower subchannels is around the value of 0.5. The effect of the flow-rate ratio of the two air streams of flowing over and under the absorbing plate on the enhancement of collector efficiency is also investigated.[[notice]]補正完

    [[abstract]]The collector efficiency in a downward-type double-pass external-recycle solar air heater with fins attached on the absorbing plate has been investigated theoretically. Considerable improvement in collector efficiency is obtainable if the collector is equipped with fins and the operation is carried out with an external recycle. Due to the recycling, the desirable effect of increasing the heat transfer coefficient compensates for the undesirable effect of decreasing the driving force (temperature difference) of heat transfer, while the attached fins provide an enlarged heat transfer area.     Use of Advance Directives in US Veterans and Non-Veterans: Findings from the Decedents of the Health and Retirement Study 1992–2014

    Evidence shows that older patients with advance directives such as a living will, or durable power of attorney for healthcare, are more likely to receive care consistent with their preferences at the end of life. Less is known about the use of advance directives between veteran and non-veteran older Americans. Using data from the decedents of a longitudinal survey, we explore whether there is a difference in having an established advance directive between the veteran and non-veteran decedents. Data were taken from the Harmonized End of Life data sets, a linked collection of variables derived from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Exit Interview. Only male decedents were included in the current analysis (N = 4828). The dependent variable, having an established advance directive, was measured by asking the proxy, “whether the deceased respondent ever provided written instructions about the treatment or care he/she wanted to receive during the final days of his/her life” and “whether the deceased respondent had a Durable Power of Attorney for healthcare?” A “yes” to either of the two items was counted as having an advance directive. The independent variable, veteran status, was determined by asking participants, “Have you ever served in the active military of the United States?” at their first HRS core interview. Logistic regression was used to predict the likelihood of having an established advance directive. While there was no difference in having an advance directive between male veteran and non-veteran decedents during the earlier follow-up period (from 1992 to 2003), male veterans who died during the second half of the study period (from 2004 to 2014) were more likely to have an established advance directive than their non-veteran counterparts (OR = 1.24, p \u3c 0.05). Other factors positively associated with having an established advance directive include dying at older ages, higher educational attainment, needing assistance in activities of daily living and being bedridden three months before death, while Black decedents and those who were married were less likely to have an advance directive in place. Our findings suggest male veterans were more likely to have an established advance directive, an indicator for better end-of-life care, than their non-veteran counterparts. This observed difference coincides with a time when the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) increased its investment in end-of-life care. More studies are needed to confirm if this higher utilization of advance directives and care planning among veterans can be attributed to the improved access and quality of end-of-life care in the VHA system

    Occult thoraco-abdominal injuries from an airbag and seatbelt

    AbstractA combination of a seatbelt and airbags decreases the risk of injury for most body regions in motor vehicle crashes. Although the severity of injuries decreases, injuries still occur. We report a case of occult thoraco-abdominal trauma in a patient who was wearing a three-point seatbelt and had airbag protection. A 59-year-old man presented to the emergency department in shock after a motor vehicle accident. He was protected by a three-point seatbelt and airbag. Chest radiographs and focused assessment with sonography for trauma showed no abnormalities. However, computed tomography revealed multiple injuries in the chest and abdomen. This case report highlights occult thoraco-abdominal trauma in a victim protected by a seatbelt and airbag, which may be a pitfall for emergency physicians. Emergency physicians should understand the limitations of chest radiographs in trauma evaluation and carry out a complete evaluation of patients

    Personal Mastery and All-Cause Mortality among Older Americans Living with Diabetes

    Introduction: Higher personal mastery is associated with better physical functioning, wellbeing, and longevity among older populations. However, few studies have focused on whether personal mastery is protective against mortality among older adults living with diabetes over time. Methods: A total of 1,779 participants were identified from an off-year survey of the Health and Retirement Study. Proportional Hazard Models were used to evaluate the significance of selected variables in predicting the survival of participants over a 13-year period. Results: A substantial proportion (46.7%) of the diabetic patients had survived by the end of 2016. Adults with lower mastery scores were more likely to die (Hazard Ratio = .94, p \u3c .001). Gender differences in the association patterns between personal mastery and survival were identified. Personal mastery had an independent health-protective effect on the survival of diabetes patients over the study period. With lower educational attainment, the foreign-born female diabetics scored higher in personal mastery measure when compared to their male counterparts. In the face of more severe diabetes comorbidity, foreign-born female diabetics also outlived their male counterparts over the study period. Conclusion: As a crucial psychological resource and a modifiable factor, personal mastery holds a potential for improving the health status among lower SES groups of older adults. Further investigations into the identified gender difference could be applied to break the cycle of poor health among lower Socio-Economic Status groups of older adults

    Homogeneous point mutation detection by quantum dot-mediated two-color fluorescence coincidence analysis

    This report describes a new genotyping method capable of detecting low-abundant point mutations in a homogeneous, separation-free format. The method is based on integration of oligonucleotide ligation with a semiconductor quantum dot (QD)-mediated two-color fluorescence coincidence detection scheme. Surface-functionalized QDs are used to capture fluorophore-labeled ligation products, forming QD-oligonucleotide nanoassemblies. The presence of such nanoassemblies and thereby the genotype of the sample is determined by detecting the simultaneous emissions of QDs and fluorophores that occurs whenever a single nanoassembly flows through the femtoliter measurement volume of a confocal fluorescence detection system. The ability of this method to detect single events enables analysis of target signals with a multiple-parameter (intensities and count rates of the digitized target signals) approach to enhance assay sensitivity and specificity. We demonstrate that this new method is capable of detecting zeptomoles of targets and achieve an allele discrimination selectivity factor >10(5)

    We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish, the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of mixed commutation relations among themselves.
