In this work, Y2.95R0.05MgAl3SiO12 (R=Yb, Y, Dy, Eu, Sm) microwave single-phase dielectric ce-ramics were successfully prepared via conventional ceramic technology by doping a series of rare earth elements with different ionic radius (Yb, Y, Dy, Eu, Sm) for the first time. The effects of A site occupied by rare earth elements on the microwave dielectric properties of Y2.95R0.05MgAl3SiO12 were studied by crystal structure refinement, scanning electron microscope (SEM), bond valence theory, P-V-L theory and infrared reflection spectroscopy. It was found that the ionicity of Y-O bond, the lattice energy, the bond energy and bond valance of Al(Tet)-O bond had important effects on microwave dielectric properties. Particularly, the optimum microwave dielectric properties were obtained for Y2.95Dy0.05MgAl3SiO12 sintered at 1575 °C for 6 h, with εr = 9.68, Q×f = 68,866 GHz, and τf = -35.8 ppm/°C, displaying its potential prospect in the 5G communication

Klebsiella aerogenes is a common infectious bacterium that poses a threat to human health. Nevertheless, there are limited data on the population structure, genetic diversity, and pathogenicity of K. aerogenes, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). The present study aimed to clarify the sequence types (STs), clonal complexes (CCs), resistance genes, and virulence factors of popular strains. Multilocus sequence typing was used to describe the population structure of K. aerogenes. The Virulence Factor Database and Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database were used to assess the virulence and resistance profiles. In this study, next-generation sequencing was performed on nasal swabs specimens collected in an HIV Voluntary Counseling Testing outpatient department in Guangzhou, China, from April to August 2019. The identification results showed that a total of 258 K. aerogenes isolates were collected from 911 participants. We found that the isolates were most resistant to furantoin (89.53%, 231/258) and ampicillin (89.15%, 230/258), followed by imipenem (24.81%, 64/258) and cefotaxime (18.22%, 47/258). The most common STs in carbapenem-resistant K. aerogenes were ST4, ST93, and ST14. The population has at least 14 CCs, including several novel ones identified in this study (CC11-CC16). The main mechanism of drug resistance genes was antibiotic efflux. Based on the presence of the iron carrier production genes irp and ybt, we identified two clusters according to virulence profiles. In cluster A, CC3 and CC4 carry the clb operator encoding the toxin. Increased monitoring is needed for the three main ST type strains carried by MSM. The main clone group CC4 has a large number of toxin genes, and it spreads among MSM. Caution is needed to prevent further spread of this clone group in this population. In sum, our results may provide a foundation for the development of new therapeutic and surveillance strategies for treating MSM

Whether species coculture can overcome the shortcomings of crop monoculture requires additional study. Here, we show how aquatic animals (i.e. carp, crabs, and softshell turtles) benefit paddy ecosystems when cocultured with rice. Three separate field experiments and three separate mesocosm experiments were conducted. Each experiment included a rice monoculture (RM) treatment and a rice-aquatic animal (RA) coculture treatment; RA included feed addition for aquatic animals. In the field experiments, rice yield was higher with RA than with RM, and RA also produced aquatic animal yields that averaged 0.52–2.57 t ha-1. Compared to their corresponding RMs, the three RAs had significantly higher apparent nitrogen (N)-use efficiency and lower weed infestation, while soil N contents were stable over time. Dietary reconstruction analysis based on 13C and 15N showed that 16.0–50.2% of aquatic animal foods were from naturally occurring organisms in the rice fields. Stable-isotope-labeling (13C) in the field experiments indicated that the organic matter decomposition rate was greater with RA than with RM. Isotope 15N labeling in the mesocosm experiments indicated that rice used 13.0–35.1% of the aquatic animal feed-N. All these results suggest that rice-aquatic animal coculture increases food production, increases N-use efficiency, and maintains soil N content by reducing weeds and promoting decomposition and complementary N use. Our study supports the view that adding species to monocultures may enhance agroecosystem functions

Introduction: Metronomic maintenance therapy (MMT) has significantly improved the survival of patients with high-risk rhabdomyosarcoma in clinical trials. However, there remains a lack of relevant data on its effectiveness in real-world situations. Methods: We retrospectively retrieved data of 459 patients < 18 years of age diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from January 2011 to July 2020 from our database. The MMT regimen was oral vinorelbine 25–40 mg/m2 for twelve 4-week cycles on days 1, 8, and 15, and oral cyclophosphamide 25–50 mg/m2 daily for 48 consecutive weeks. Results: A total of 57 patients who underwent MMT were included in the analysis. The median follow-up time was 27.8 (range: 2.9–117.5) months. From MMT to the end of follow-up, the 3-year PFS and OS rates were 40.6% ± 6.8% and 58.3% ± 7.2%, respectively. The 3-year PFS was 43.6% ± 11.3% in patients who were initially diagnosed as low- and intermediate-risk but relapsed after comprehensive treatment (20/57), compared with 27.8% ± 10.4% in high-risk patients (20/57) and 52.8% ± 13.3% in intermediate-risk patients who did not relapse (17/57). The corresponding 3-year OS for these three groups was 65.8% ± 11.4%, 50.1% ± 12.9%, and 55.6% ± 13.6%, respectively. Conclusion: We present a novel study of MMT with oral vinorelbine and continuous low doses of cyclophosphamide in real-world pediatric patients with RMS. Our findings showed that the MMT strategy significantly improved patient outcomes and may be an effective treatment for high-risk and relapsed patients

Two new polyketide compounds, asperulosins A and B (1–2), and one new prenylated small molecule, asperulosin C (3), along with nine known compounds (4–12), were isolated and identified from a fungus Aspergillus rugulosa. Their structures were extensively elucidated via HRESIMS, 1D, and 2D NMR analysis. The absolute configurations of the new compounds were determined by the comparison of their electronic circular dichroism (ECD), calculated ECD spectra, and the detailed discussion with those in previous reports. Structurally, compounds 1 and 2 belonged to the polyketide family and were from different origins. Compound 2 was constructed by five continuous quaternary carbon atoms, which occur rarely in natural products. All of the isolates were evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity against the production of nitric oxide (NO) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. Among those, compounds 1 and 5 showed a significant inhibitory effect on NO production with IC50 values of 1.49 ± 0.31 and 3.41 ± 0.85 μM, respectively. Additionally, compounds 1 and 5 markedly increased the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL10 while suppressing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, MCP-1, and IL12. Besides, 1 and 5 inhibited the transcription level of pro-inflammatory macrophage markers IL6, IL1β, and TNF-α while remarkably elevating the anti-inflammatory factor IL10 and M2 macrophage markers ARG1 and CD206. Moreover, 1 and 5 restrained the expression and nuclear translocation of NF-κB, as well as its downstream signaling proteins COX-2 and iNOS. All these results suggest that 1 and 5 have potential as anti-inflammatory agents, with better or comparable activities than those of the positive control, dexamethasone

The gas-phase formation mechanism of iodic acid as an atmospheric aerosol source

    Get PDF
Iodine is a reactive trace element in atmospheric chemistry that destroys ozone and nucleates particles. Iodine emissions have tripled since 1950 and are projected to keep increasing with rising O-3 surface concentrations. Although iodic acid (HIO3) is widespread and forms particles more efficiently than sulfuric acid, its gas-phase formation mechanism remains unresolved. Here, in CLOUD atmospheric simulation chamber experiments that generate iodine radicals at atmospherically relevant rates, we show that iodooxy hypoiodite, IOIO, is efficiently converted into HIO3 via reactions (R1) IOIO + O-3 -> IOIO4 and (R2) IOIO4 + H2O -> HIO3 + HOI + O-(1)(2). The laboratory-derived reaction rate coefficients are corroborated by theory and shown to explain field observations of daytime HIO3 in the remote lower free troposphere. The mechanism provides a missing link between iodine sources and particle formation. Because particulate iodate is readily reduced, recycling iodine back into the gas phase, our results suggest a catalytic role of iodine in aerosol formation.Peer reviewe
