This study addresses the trend estimation of the participation indices (PARTI) in the Istanbul Stock Exchange (BIST) using Markov chain (MC) theory. PARTI can be regarded as the Participation 50 Index (KAT50) and the Participation 30 Index (KATLM). Since KAT50 has only been calculated since 9th July 2014, there are only a few studies on this index. Therefore, in this study, we examine the PARTI indices. Firstly, we have employed MC method using 520 daily closing values of KATLM, between 1st July 2014 and 29th July 2016. For the KAT50 index, we used 514 daily closing values between 9th July 2014 and 29th July 2016, considering the states of these indices as increasing, decreasing or remaining stable. In order to perform a Markov chain analysis relating to prediction of the future situation, a transition probability matrix was created. Using this matrix, a steady-state analysis of the chain was performed and the future trends of KAT50-KATLM were forecasted successfully. It can be concluded that the results of this study are very helpful for individual and institutional investors’ investment decisions within global economies.

Competitive Jihadism : A New Theorethical Approach to Jihadi De Facto States

Due to its rather un-celebrated characteristics and lack of legal basis it was hard to encircle it with definitions and understand with theories. This thesis is concerned with state-building phase of jihadi de facto states and especially it's consolidation of sovereignty and jihadi competition with their parent states. This thesis accepts " Competitive Democratization" of Nina Caspersen as main frame and customizes it for jihadi de- facto states. Moreover it accepts each fact comprises three-level reality and grand theories may not properly function as Rosenau forecasts and names it as " Turbulence Approach". In this study , it is acclaimed that there is a positive correlation between consolidation level of sovereignty of a jihadi de facto state and it's competition on jihadi policies with it's parent state(s). Consolidation requirements are adjusted accordingly League of Nations parameters. I especially confirmed that adopted a more jihadist policy by de facto jihadi state comparing to it's parent state will have positive contribution to its sovereignty level by helping it to gain more repercussion from target audiences and create its own legitimate basis. I applied this hypothesis on "Islamic State-Iraq-Syria" example throughout the thesis, as it is the richest by offering data to study and the most contemporary one. Although it is a recent fact, this case proved to be fully supportive. Machining strategy development in 5-axis milling operations using process models

    Get PDF
Increased productivity and part quality can be achieved by selecting machining strategies and conditions properly. At one extreme very high speed and feed rate with small depth of cut can be used for high productivity whereas deep cuts accompanied with slow speeds and feeds may also provide increased material removal rates in some cases. In this study, it is shown that process models are useful tools to simulate and compare alternative strategies for machining of a part. 5-axis milling of turbine engine compressors made out of titanium alloys is used as the case study where strategies such as flank milling (deep cuts), point milling (light cuts) and stripe milling (medium depths) are compared in terms of process time by considering chatter stability, surface finish and tool deflections

This study presents two new numerical techniques for solving time-fractional one-dimensional cable differential equation (FCE) modeling neuronal dynamics. We have introduced new formulations for the approximate-analytical solution of the FCE by using modified homotopy perturbation method defined with conformable operator (MHPMC) and reduced differential transform method defined with conformable operator (RDTMC), which are derived the solutions for linear-nonlinear fractional PDEs. In order to show the efficiencies of these methods, we have compared the numerical and exact solutions of fractional neuronal dynamics problem. Moreover, we have declared that the proposed models are very accurate and illustrative techniques in determining to approximate-analytical solutions for the PDEs of fractional order in conformable sense

The peace is uneasy and needs to be won everyday: Economic assistance and peacebuilding among marginalized groups in Northern Ireland and the Border Area

    Get PDF
While Northern Ireland is still recovering from the violent legacy of the 30-year Troubles during a global COVID-19 pandemic, people still experience violence daily. Economic and political inequalities heighten intergroup tensions and insecurity contributing to the promotion of destructive stories. Brexit has escalated the culture wars between the Protestant Unionist Loyalist and Catholic Nationalist Republican communities as Loyalist youth and paramilitary groups protest on Belfast’s streets. Through 120 semi-structured interviews, we explore the experiences and understandings of Civil Society Organization (CSO) peacebuilding and reconciliation workers that liaison with ex-combatants and youth in Derry and the Border area of Northern Ireland. Findings indicate that working-class youth and former combatants continue to suffer from poverty and the legacy of the conflict with few employment opportunities. CSO led projects that empower youth may end when the funding ends as youth and ex-combatants continue to feel disenfranchised

Today students need to take responsibility for their own learning and be autonomous more than thirty years ago. Learner autonomy, which makes the learners more effective, has been given attention in the language learning process over the last three decades. The goal of this study is to explore Iraqi English teachers’ beliefs about learner autonomy. The participants of the study consist of 116 EFL teachers (87 males and 29 females) from different academic (Diploma, Bachelor, Master and PhD) and teaching (intermediate, secondary and university) levels. A questionnaire developed by Borg & AlBusaidi (2012) is used to elicit the required data. Data is analyzed by using SPSS version 22. The results of the study reveal that EFL teachers have a positive attitude to some extent towards learner autonomy. The results of the study and their pedagogical implications are discussed, and recommendations for further research are provided

Leadership Styles and Technology: Leadership Competency Level of Educational Leaders

    Get PDF
AbstractResearchers have studied the leadership styles of educational leaders in connection with their level of computer use and success in integration of ICT. This study aims to reveal if the leadership style can be a predictor of competent technology leaders. The importance of this study is to investigate the leaders’ competency as technology leaders rather than level of perceived use of technology, using Technology Leadership Competency Scale for School Administrators (TELÖY) (Hacıfazlıoğlu, Karadeniz, & Dalgıç, 2011) which is adapted from International Society for Technology and Education (ISTE) standards for school administrators. Fifty educators, who take leadership or administrative roles in educational institutions from the Eastern part of Turkey, completed Multi factor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) developed by Bass (1985) and translated and modified for the Turkish leaders by Demir and Okan (2008) and TELÖY. The results indicate moderate correlation between both transactional and transformational leadership styles. It is concluded that leadership style is not a predictor of competency level of technology leadership. The study contributes into literature discussing the effects of cultural differences in different countries on desired leadership styles, which in result may effect the level of technology leadership competency. In addition it also argues that leadership style characteristics cannot be used as a method to transform education and schools

COVID-19 and its Economic Implications for Turkish Tour Guides

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 outbreak, which became one of the most stunning pandemics of the modern era, had a truly global effect on the world economy in a short period of time. Almost all countries were negatively impacted by the outbreak, which practically paralysed global life and resulted in negative dynamics, unprecedented conditions, and obstacles. Türkiye was not immune to this, having felt seriously negative consequences during this period. Tourism, nearly coming to a complete interruption for the first time since World War II in the 21st century, happened to be one of the hardest hit industries. The industry of tourism in Türkiye, steadily growing over the previous decade was subjected to this difficult process, bringing the situation to a near-standstill. Tour guides who are major front-line employees in the industry experienced this negativity and faced numerous job-related challenges. With these considerations in mind, the present study sought to uncover how the COVID-19 outbreak impacted Turkish tour guides. For this purpose, a sample of 26 certified tour guides associated with the Izmir Chamber of Tour Guides were interviewed using a semi-structured interview form in September 2021. The study findings reveal that the COVID-19 outbreak greatly affected tour guides, reducing their sources of income while maintaining most of their fixed expenses. To ensure their survival, tour guides require more supports, particularly financial ones
