Direct fabrication of high-performance high speed steel products enhanced by LaB6
A direct fabrication technology (DFT) without smelting has been developed for fabricating sophisticated high speed steel products with low pollution, near-net shaping and short process. The steel consisting of (wt.%): 6.4W, 5.0Mo, 4.2Cr, 3.1V, 8.5Co and 1.28C, was fabricated as exemplary material. The activated and reactive sintering of green compacts under vacuum with low activation energy, redox reaction enhanced diffusion and the construction of concentration gradient of alloying elements around pores, promotes the nearly full densification (>\ua099.40%). Also, the DFT steels show high purity and superior mechanical properties. Minor strengthening agent LaB (0.1\ua0wt.%), which is easily to be accurately introduced in DFT, obviously increases the hot hardness, temper resistance, bend strength and toughness of DFT M3:2. The strengthening effect of boron atoms and La-rich complexes are proposed to directly result in the high hot hardness and temper resistance of LaB containing steel
The productions of the top-pions and top-Higgs associated with the charm quark at the hadron colliders
In the topcolor-assistant technicolor (TC2) model, the typical physical
particles, top-pions and top-Higgs, are predicted and the existence of these
particles could be regarded as the robust evidence of the model. These
particles are accessible at the Tevatron and LHC, and furthermore the
flavor-changing(FC) feature of the TC2 model can provide us a unique chance to
probe them. In this paper, we study some interesting FC production processes of
top-pions and top-Higgs at the Tevatron and LHC, i.e., and
productions. We find that the light charged top-pions
are not favorable by the Tevatron experiments and the Tevatron has a little
capability to probe neutral top-pion and top-Higgs via these FC production
processes. At the LHC, however, the cross section can reach the level of
pb for production and fb for
production. So one can expect that enough signals could be
produced at the LHC experiments. Furthermore, the SM background should be clean
due to the FC feature of the processes and the FC decay modes can provide us the typical signal to
detect the top-pions and top-Higgs. Therefore, it is hopeful to find the signal
of top-pions and top-Higgs with the running of the LHC via these FC processes.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Identification of essential histidine residues in a recombinant alpha-amylase of thermophilic and alkaliphilic Bacillus sp strain TS-23
To understand the structure-function relationships of a truncated Bacillus sp. strain TS-23 alpha-amylase, each of His-137, His-191, His-239, His-269, His-305, His-323, His-361, His-436, and His-475 was replaced with leucine. The molecular masses of the purified wild-type and mutant enzymes were approximately 54 kDa. The specific activity of His323Leu and His436Leu was decreased by more than 52%, while His239Leu, His305Leu, and His475Leu showed activity similar to that of the wild-type enzyme. As compared with the wild-type enzyme, His323Leu and His436Leu exhibited a 62% decrease in the value of k(cat)/K-m. Alterations in His-191, His-239, His-305, and His-475 did not cause a significant change in the K-m or k(cat) values. At 70degreesC, a decreased half-life was observed in His436Leu. These results indicate that His-137, His-269, and His-361 of Bacillus sp. strain TS-23 alpha-amylase are important for proper catalytic activity and that His-436 may contribute to the thermostability of the enzyme
High-throughput avian molecular sexing by SYBR green-based real-time PCR combined with melting curve analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Combination of <it>CHD </it>(chromo-helicase-DNA binding protein)-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with electrophoresis (PCR/electrophoresis) is the most common avian molecular sexing technique but it is lab-intensive and gel-required. Gender determination often fails when the difference in length between the PCR products of <it>CHD-Z </it>and <it>CHD-W </it>genes is too short to be resolved.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here, we are the first to introduce a PCR-melting curve analysis (PCR/MCA) to identify the gender of birds by genomic DNA, which is gel-free, quick, and inexpensive. <it>Spilornis cheela hoya </it>(<it>S. c. hoya</it>) and <it>Pycnonotus sinensis </it>(<it>P. sinensis</it>) were used to illustrate this novel molecular sexing technique. The difference in the length of <it>CHD </it>genes in <it>S. c. hoya </it>and <it>P. sinensis </it>is 13-, and 52-bp, respectively. Using Griffiths' P2/P8 primers, molecular sexing failed both in PCR/electrophoresis of <it>S. c. hoya </it>and in PCR/MCA of <it>S. c. hoya </it>and <it>P. sinensis</it>. In contrast, we redesigned sex-specific primers to yield 185- and 112-bp PCR products for the <it>CHD-Z </it>and <it>CHD-W </it>genes of <it>S. c. hoya</it>, respectively, using PCR/MCA. Using this specific primer set, at least 13 samples of <it>S. c. hoya </it>were examined simultaneously and the Tm peaks of <it>CHD-Z </it>and <it>CHD-W </it>PCR products were distinguished.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this study, we introduced a high-throughput avian molecular sexing technique and successfully applied it to two species. This new method holds a great potential for use in high throughput sexing of other avian species, as well.</p
Electron scattering in multi-wall carbon-nanotubes
We analyze two scattering mechanisms that might cause intrinsic electronic
resistivity in multi-wall carbon nanotubes: scattering by dopant impurities,
and scattering by inter-tube electron-electron interaction. We find that for
typically doped multi-wall tubes backward scattering at dopants is by far the

Lepton flavor violation decays in the topcolor-assisted technicolor model and the littlest Higgs model with parity
The new particles predicted by the topcolor-assisted technicolor ()
model and the littlest Higgs model with T-parity (called model) can
induce the lepton flavor violation () couplings at tree level or one loop
level, which might generate large contributions to some processes. Taking
into account the constraints of the experimental data on the relevant free
parameters, we calculate the branching ratios of the decay processes
with = , and
in the context of these two kinds of new physics models. We find
that the model and the model can indeed produce significant

Superconductivity in carbon nanotube ropes
We investigate the conditions in which superconductivity may develop in ropes
of carbon nanotubes. It is shown that the interaction among a large number of
metallic nanotubes favors the appearance of a metallic phase in the ropes,
intermediate between respective phases with spin-density-wave and
superconducting correlations. These arise in samples with about 100 metallic
nanotubes or more, where the long-range Coulomb interaction is very effectively
reduced and it may be overcome by the attractive interaction from the exchange
of optical phonons within each nanotube. We estimate that the probability for
the tunneling of Cooper pairs between neighboring nanotubes is much higher than
that for single electrons in a disordered rope. The effect of pair hopping is
therefore what establishes the intertube coherence, and the tunneling amplitude
of the Cooper pairs dictates the scale of the transition to the superconducting

Looking for magnetic monopoles at LHC with diphoton events
Magnetic monopoles have been a subject of interest since Dirac established
the relation between the existence of monopoles and charge quantization. The
intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. The
Large Hadron Collider is reaching energies never achieved before allowing the
search for exotic particles in the TeV mass range. In a continuing effort to
discover these rare particles we propose here other ways to detect them. We
study the observability of monopoles and monopolium, a monopole-antimonopole
bound state, at the Large Hadron Collider in the channel for
monopole masses in the range 500-1000 GeV. We conclude that LHC is an ideal
machine to discover monopoles with masses below 1 TeV at present running

It goes a step further than the existing literature: in the formulation of the fuzzy earned value we consider not only its duration, but also cost and production, and alternatives in the scheduling between the earliest and latest times. The mathematical model is implemented in a prototypical construction project with all the estimated values taken as fuzzy numbers. Our findings suggest that different possible schedules and the fuzzy arithmetic provide more objective results in uncertain environments than the traditional methodology. Electroweak Precision Constraints on Vector-like Fermions
We calculate the oblique electroweak corrections and confront with the
experiments in an extension of the Standard Model. The new fields added are a
vector-like weak doublet and a singlet fermion. After electroweak symmetry
breaking there is a mixing between the components of the new fields, but no
mixing allowed with the standard fermions. Four electroweak parameters,
, , W, Y are presented in the formalism of Barbieri et al.,
these are the generalization of the Peskin-Takeuchi S, T, U's. The vector-like
extension is slightly constrained, requires the new neutral fermion
masses not to be very far from each other, allowing higher mass difference for
higher masses and smaller mixing. gives practically no
constraints on the masses. This extension can give a positive contribution to
, allowing a heavy Higgs boson in electroweak precision tests of the
