Model Suggests Potential for Porites Coral Population Recovery After Removal of Anthropogenic Disturbance (Luhuitou, Hainan, South China Sea)
Population models are important for resource management and can inform about potential trajectories useful for planning purposes, even with incomplete monitoring data. From size frequency data on Luhuitou fringing reef, Hainan, South China Sea, a matrix population model of massive corals (Porites lutea) was developed and trajectories over 100 years under no disturbance and random disturbances were projected. The model reflects a largely open population of Porites lutea, with low local recruitment and preponderance of imported recruitment. Under no further disturbance, the population of Porites lutea will grow and its size structure will change from predominance of small size classes to large size classes. Therewith, total Porites cover will increase. Even under random disturbances every 10 to 20 years, the Porites population could remain viable, albeit at lower space cover. The models suggest recovery at Luhuitou following the removal of chronic anthropogenic disturbance. Extending the area of coral reef reserves to protect the open coral community and the path of connectivity is advisable and imperative for the conservation of Hainan’s coral reefs
Fasudil in Combination With Bone Marrow Stromal Cells (BMSCs) Attenuates Alzheimer\u27s Disease-Related Changes Through the Regulation of the Peripheral Immune System.
Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease. Its mechanism is still not clear. Majority of research focused on the central nervous system (CNS) changes, while few studies emphasize on peripheral immune system modulation. Our study aimed to investigate the regulation of the peripheral immune system and its relationship to the severity of the disease after treatment in an AD model of APPswe/PSEN1dE9 transgenic (APP/PS1 Tg) mice. APP/PS1 Tg mice (8 months old) were treated with the ROCK-II inhibitor 1-(5-isoquinolinesulfonyl)-homo-piperazine (Fasudil) (intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections, 25 mg/kg/day), bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs; caudal vein injections, 1 × 1
Effects of surfactants/stabilizing agents on the microstructure and properties of porous geopolymers by direct foaming
Metakaolin-based porous geopolymers were synthesized by direct foaming using various surfactants/stabilizing agents with or without chemical pore-forming agent (hydrogen peroxide). The effects of surfactants/stabilizing agents and solid loading on their pore morphology, density, porosity, and some properties, such as thermal conductivity and compression strength, were investigated. Experimental data and different theoretical models were successfully applied to evaluate both compression strength (σ) and effective thermal conductivity (λ) as a function of porosity (ε). Porous geopolymers with higher ε presented both a lower value of mechanical strength and improved thermal conductivity performance. The variation of σ with ε could be well described by the minimum solid area (MSA) model, and the variation of λ with ε was found to be more accurately described using a universal model derived from the five basic models
Two-element interferometer for millimeter-wave solar flare observations
In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a two-element
interferometer working in the millimeter wave band (39.5 GHz - 40 GHz) for
observing solar radio emissions through nulling interference. The system is
composed of two 50 cm aperture Cassegrain antennas mounted on a common
equatorial mount, with a separation of 230 wavelengths. The cross-correlation
of the received signals effectively cancels the quiet solar component of the
large flux density (~3000 sfu) that reduces the detection limit due to
atmospheric fluctuations. The system performance is obtained as follows: the
noise factor of the AFE in the observation band is less than 2.1 dB, system
sensitivity is approximately 12.4 K (~34 sfu) with an integration time constant
of 0.1 ms (default), the frequency resolution is 153 kHz, and the dynamic range
is larger than 30 dB. Through actual testing, the nulling interferometer
observes a quiet sun with a low level of output fluctuations (of up to 50 sfu)
and has a significantly lower radiation flux variability (of up to 190 sfu)
than an equivalent single-antenna system, even under thick cloud cover. As a
result, this new design can effectively improve observation sensitivity by
reducing the impact of atmospheric and system fluctuations during observation
Fasudil in Combination With Bone Marrow Stromal Cells (BMSCs) Attenuates Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Changes Through the Regulation of the Peripheral Immune System
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease. APP/PS1 Tg mice (8 months old) were treated with the ROCK-II inhibitor 1-(5-isoquinolinesulfonyl)- homo-piperazine (Fasudil) (intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections, 25 mg/kg/day), bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs; caudal vein injections, 1 × 106 BMSCs /time/mouse), Fasudil combined with BMSCs, or saline (i.p., control) for 2 months. Morris water maze (MWM) test was used to evaluate learning and memory. The mononuclear cells (MNCs) of spleens of APP/PS1 Tg mice were analyzed using flow cytometry for CD4+ T-cells, macrophages, and the pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory molecules of the macrophages. Immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the expression of ROCK-II in the spleens of APP/PS1 Tg mice. The MWM test showed improved spatial learning ability in APP/PS1 Tg mice treated with Fasudil or BMSCs alone or in combination, compared to untreated APP/PS1 Tg mice. Fasudil combined with BMSCs intervention significantly promoted the proliferation of CD4+/CD25+ and CD4+/ IL-10 lymphocytes, induced the release of cytokine factors, and regulated the balance of the immune system to work functionally. It also shifted M1 (MHC-II, CD86) to M2 (IL-10, CD206) phenotype of macrophages of CD11b and significantly enhanced the anti-inflammatory and phagocytic abilities (CD16/32) of macrophages of CD11b. Immunohistochemical staining showed significantly decreased expression of ROCK-II in mice treated with combination of Fasudil with BMSCs as compared to saline control. Fasudil in combination of BMSCs improved cognition of APP/PS1 Tg mice through the regulation of the peripheral immune system, including reduction of ROCK-II expression and increased proportion of anti-inflammatory M2 mononuclear phenotype and phagocytic macrophages in the spleen of the peripheral immune system. The latter was achieved through the communication between brain and spleen to improve the immunoregulation of CNS and AD disease conditions
