Relationship between intermittency and stratification
A formal analogy exists between 2D turbulence and 3D turbulence with stratification and rotation. Although the effect of the rotation, to the scale typical of the turbulence, is negligible in the atmosphere, we have found a relationship between the behavior of the intermittency and that of the atmospheric stratification. In order to do that, the intermittency has been characterized through the flatness of the PDFs of velocity increments, for the smallest possible scale, present in our measurements
The anatomy of urban social networks and its implications in the searchability problem
The appearance of large geolocated communication datasets has recently
increased our understanding of how social networks relate to their physical
space. However, many recurrently reported properties, such as the spatial
clustering of network communities, have not yet been systematically tested at
different scales. In this work we analyze the social network structure of over
25 million phone users from three countries at three different scales: country,
provinces and cities. We consistently find that this last urban scenario
presents significant differences to common knowledge about social networks.
First, the emergence of a giant component in the network seems to be controlled
by whether or not the network spans over the entire urban border, almost
independently of the population or geographic extension of the city. Second,
urban communities are much less geographically clustered than expected. These
two findings shed new light on the widely-studied searchability in
self-organized networks. By exhaustive simulation of decentralized search
strategies we conclude that urban networks are searchable not through
geographical proximity as their country-wide counterparts, but through an
homophily-driven community structure
Implementation of a resistance training on young football players
El GE y el GC incrementan el porcentaje de grasa corporalThe aim of this study is to check the effect of a specific training strength program on young footballers. 38 players took place in the study; they were divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG). The EG added a specific strength work to their football workout, whereas the CG just practised football. Both of them were assessed at the beginning and at the end of the program to know their maximum dynamic strength in their flexor and extensor muscles of their knees; their muscle mass in their lower extremities; their body mass and fat percentage; and their speed in the 10 and 20 metres trials. Just the EG improves remarkably their maximum dynamic strength … No differences in their muscle mass or in their movement strength are found. The EG and the CG increase their MBRate and their body fa
Setting conclitions, Petrology ancl Geochemistry of calc-alkaline rhyolites, stephanian-permian, in the iberian chains
Estas riolitas representan un origen crustal, con baja tasa de fusión, previo a un magmatismo calco-alcalino de origen subcrustal.[Abstract] The setting characters, the petrological and geochemical composition are exposed for sorne rhyolitic sills, with calc-alkaline affinity, which were set, in a syncollisional environment, in several areas of the Iberian Chains. These rhyolites represent a crustal origin, with a low degree of fussion, previous to a calc-alkaline magmatism of subcrustal origino

Inhibition of γ-secretase induces G2/M arrest and triggers apoptosis in breast cancer cells
γ-Secretase activity is vital for the transmembrane cleavage of Notch receptors and the subsequent migration of their intracellular domains to the nucleus. Notch overexpression has been associated with breast, colon, cervical and prostate cancers. We tested the effect of three different γ-secretase inhibitors (GSIs) in breast cancer cells. One inhibitor (GSI1) was lethal to breast cancer cell lines at concentrations of 2 μM and above but had a minimal effect on the non-malignant breast lines. GSI1 was also cytotoxic for a wide variety of cancer cell lines in the NCI60 cell screen. GSI1 treatment resulted in a marked decrease in γ-secretase activity and downregulation of the Notch signalling pathway with no effects on expression of the γ-secretase components or ligands. Flow cytometric and western blot analyses indicated that GSI1 induces a G2/M arrest leading to apoptosis, through downregulation of Bcl-2, Bax and Bcl-XL. GSI1 also inhibited proteasome activity. Thus, the γ-secretase inhibitor GSI1 has a complex mode of action to inhibit breast cancer cell survival and may represent a novel therapy in breast cancer
Setting, Petrology and Geochemistry of the Volcanoclastic Complex of Orea (Guadalajara, Iberian Chain)
[Abstract] The volcanoclastic outcrop ofOrea (south margin of the Iberian Chain) reflects a pluriepisodic igneous activity, expressed in agglomerates and tuffs ofdacitic composition (with a calc-alkaline affinity) and Autunian-Thuringian age. The tuffs are the results' of a hydromagmatic activity, developed under a thin sheet of water (in a paludal environment). The structure of the magmatic outcrop
results of the late-Hercynian extensional tectonics, equivalent to that observed
in many other outcrops ofthe southeast border ofthe Iberian Chain. The setting
characters and composition of the involved magmatic rock-types, suggest the
presence of only one volcanic focus, as in other coetaneous half-grabens of this
sector of the Iberian Chain
Base Case Analysis of a HYSOL Power Plant
Concentrating solar power (CSP) plants are regarded as an alternative solution for electricity generation. The main drawback of this technology is related to the intermittent and seasonal nature of the solar irradiation. As a consequence, most CSP plants have a reduced capacity factor and difficulties to supply electricity on demand to the grid. The integration of energy back-up systems may contribute to increasing power generation capacity and stability. Several options are being developed at present which are based on the incorporation of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and also the use of auxiliary fuels. HYSOL is a new concept in CSP technology that relies on the integration of a molten salt TES system operating in hybrid mode with a biogas turbine with a Heat Recovery System (HRS). This paper illustrates the methodology and first results obtained during the development of the static model, considering a Base Case of HYSOL configuration. The study of this Base Case allows evaluating the impact of HYSOL technology, providing preliminary plant information and defining the required tools to be used in the project

Preliminary comparison of magmatic manifestations, calc-alkaline affinity and stephanian-permian age, in the Iberian Chain

A synthetic and actualized study of several magmatic calc-alkaline manifestations
