Some Evidence for a Non-Movement Approach to Japanese Case Licensing

    Get PDF
This paper provides some evidence for the non-movement hypothesis that Japanese nominals are licensed in situ and do not undergo movement for Case-feature checking (Fukui 1986,Takano 1996,Ikawa 1997,and Fukui and Takano 1998). We focus on three scopal contrasts between English and Japanese : (i) scope rigidity in Japanese, (ii) distribution of Negative Polarity Items (henceforth NPIs) and Positive Polarity Items (henceforth PPIs) in negative sentences, and (iii) lack of scope ambiguity between an o-marked Accusative object and a Postpositional phrase in Japanese. Those facts are simultaneously accounted for by the assumption that Japanese nominals undergo no movement from a theta-position to a Case-checking position. This leads one to conclude that Japanese has no Agr projection

The purpose of this study was to clarify the change of the sleep and the mood of the university student in geriatric nursing practice. Sleep before and after the conference-the Awakening Rhythmand mood changes were compared. As a result, there is a decrease in sleep deprivation and quality of sleep before and after the conference. The weekend before and after the conference is compensated for the lack of sleep on weekdays. The mood before and after the conference is in a healthy state. The physical load due to the lack of sleep before and after the conference is easy to accumulate fatigue. Therefore, it was suggested that it was necessary to help the stress condition be able to be solved by an appropriate means and to be able to get good sleep

As a result of this research, the following was clarified. Both the family living alone and the couple\u27s households are generally in good sleeping state. Both the living alone household and the couple household are generally in a state of mental health. There are many conversation exchanges between families and social activities, and we are able to make intimate social exchanges. Conversation exchanges have a positive effect on sleep and mental health. Meanwhile, there are people who do not talk much, suggesting that it is necessary to consider how to support the elderly according to the actual circumstances of the area

Suzaku Observation of the Brightest Broad-Line Radio Galaxy 4C 50.55 (IGR J 21247+5058)

We report the results from a deep Suzaku observation of 4C 50.55 (IGR J 21247+5058), the brightest broad-line radio galaxy in the hard X-ray (> 10 keV) sky. The simultaneous broad band spectra over 1-60 keV can be represented by a cut-off power law with two layers of absorption and a significant reflection component from cold matter with a solid angle of \Omega/2\pi \approx 0.2. A rapid flux rise by ~ 20% over 2 \times 10^4 sec is detected in the 2-10 keV band. The spectral energy distribution suggests that there is little contribution to the total X-ray emission from jets. Applying a thermal Comptonization model, we find that corona is optically thick (\tau_e \approx 3) and has a relatively low temperature (kT_e \approx 30 keV). The narrow iron-K emission line is consistent with a picture where the standard disk is truncated and/or its inner part is covered by optically thick Comptonizing corona smearing out relativistic broad line features. The inferred disk structure may be a common feature of accretion flows onto black holes that produce powerful jets.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Scattered X-rays in Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei and their Implications for Geometrical Structure and Evolution

We construct a new sample of 32 obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the Second XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue to investigate their multiwavelength properties in relation to the "scattering fraction", the ratio of the soft X-ray flux to the absorption-corrected direct emission. The sample covers a broad range of the scattering fraction (0.1%-10%). A quarter of the 32 AGNs have a very low scattering fraction (smaller than 0.5%), which suggests that they are buried in a geometrically thick torus with a very small opening angle. We investigate correlations between the scattering fraction and multiwavelength properties. We find that AGNs with a small scattering fraction tend to have low [O III]lambda5007/X-ray luminosity ratios. This result agrees with the expectation that the extent of the narrow-line region is small because of the small opening angle of the torus. There is no significant correlation between scattering fraction and far-infrared luminosity. This implies that a scale height of the torus is not primarily determined by starburst activity. We also compare scattering fraction with black hole mass or Eddington ratio and find a weak anti-correlation between the Eddington ratio and scattering fraction. This implies that more rapidly growing supermassive black holes tend to have thicker tori.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

The Effect of a Blue Light Filtering Intraocular Lens on Macular Edema

    Get PDF
This study sought to compare the effects of either a blue light-filtering intraocular lens (blue-filtering IOL) or an ultraviolet light-filtering intraocular lens (UV-filtering IOL) on the incidence of angiographic macular edema (ME) 3 and 12 months after implantation. A prospective randomized parallel clinical study was performed at Showa University Hospital. Forty-five cataract patients randomly received either a blue-filtering IOL (n = 21) or a UV-filtering IOL (n = 24), and macular leakage was evaluated by fluorescence angiography. At 3 months, ME was 24% in the blue- and 25% in the UV-filtering IOL group. At 12 months, ME was 5% in the blue- and 21% in the UV-filtering IOL group. The recovery rate in the blue-filtering IOL group was higher than in the UV-filtering IOL group at 12 months after surgery (P = 0.0457). These results suggested that an implanted blue-filtering IOL is more effective for recovery of ME than a UV-filtering IOL

FQ Subjects and Scope in Minimalist Syntax

Ueda (2000, 2002, 2003a, 2003b) propose a new scope calculation system named a phase-based approach. The new system treats scope calculation as a feature-matching operation in C_. We call this matching operation F_-matching. On the basis of our new approach to scope calculation, this paper explores scope interpretation in sentences with floating quantifiers (henceforth FQs), focusing on the case in which FQs appear in the subject position. We call subjects of this type FQ subjects. We observe interesting scope phenomena concerning FQs, which are problematic data for previous analyses. It is demonstrated that the mysterious scope facts in FQ subject constructions with and without scrambling are reducible to our phase-based approach
