    Behaviours of Bubbles in the Gas-Solid Fluidized-Beds

    The size, shape and rising velocity of bubbles and also particle concentration in bubbles which appeared in the air-solid fluidized bed were investigated by photography, X-ray photograpy, X-ray cinematography and capacitance method. The results were that the bubbles had nearly the shape of spherical cap and there were few particles in the bubbles. Although the rising velocity of the bubble was affected largely by other bubbles, it was proportional to the square root of the vertical bubble length and the bubbles became large with the process of repetition of coalescence and redispersion

    Semiconductor Lasers With Integrated Plasmonic Polarizers

    The authors reported the plasmonic control of semiconductor laser polarization by means of metallic gratings and subwavelength apertures patterned on the laser emission facet. An integrated plasmonic polarizer can project the polarization of a semiconductor laser onto other directions. By designing a facet with two orthogonal grating-aperture structures, a polarization state consisting of a superposition of a linearly and right-circularly polarized light was demonstrated in a quantum cascade laser; a first step toward a circularly polarized laser.Engineering and Applied Science

    Age-dependent trajectories differ between within-pair and extra-pair paternity success.

    Reproductive success is associated with age in many taxa, increasing in early life followed by reproductive senescence. In socially monogamous, but genetically polygamous species, this generates the interesting possibility of differential trajectories of within-pair and extra-pair siring success with age in males. We investigate these relationships simultaneously using within-individual analyses with 13 years of data from an insular house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population. As expected, we found that both within- and extra-pair paternity success increased with age, followed by a senescence-like decline. However, the age trajectories of within- and extra-pair paternity successes differed significantly, with the extra-pair paternity success increasing faster, albeit non-significantly so, in early life, and showing a delayed decline by 1.5 years on average later in life compared to within-pair paternity success. These different trajectories indicate that the two alternative mating tactics should have age-dependent payoffs. Males may partition their reproductive effort between within- and extra-pair matings depending on their current age in order to reap the maximal combined benefit from both strategies. The interplay between these mating strategies and age-specific mortality may explain the variation in rates of extra-pair paternity observed within and between-species.     Cystic Lymphangioma of the Pancreas with Spontaneous Rupture: Report of a Case

    Lymphangioma is a benign and congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. Most lymphangiomas are preferentially located in the head and neck region. The abdominal organs are uncommon sites of origin. Several cases of lymphangioma in abdominal organs were reported, however, the pancreas is one of the rarest origins. Generally, intra-abdominal lymphangioma is asymptomatic and found incidentally, but in some cases, the patient complains of abdominal distension or a palpable mass. We describe the case of a 38-year-old male who presented with sudden-onset upper abdominal pain. Rupture of a cystic tumor of the pancreatic head was suspected, based on the findings of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and endoscopic ultrasonography. Subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was undertaken. The tumor, which was 4 × 4.5 × 8 cm in size, was pathologically diagnosed as a cystic lymphangioma. In conclusion, pancreatic lymphangioma is mostly asymptomatic, a ruptured case causing ‘acute abdomen’ has never been reported. Since lymphangioma is benign, it could be observed with accurate diagnosis. The surgical indication would be limited to cases of symptomatic lymphangiomas

    Growth and characterization of α\alpha-Sn thin films on In- and Sb-rich reconstructions of InSb(001)

    α\alpha-Sn thin films can exhibit a variety of topologically non-trivial phases. Both studying the transitions between these phases and making use of these phases in eventual applications requires good control over the electronic and structural quality of α\alpha-Sn thin films. α\alpha-Sn growth on InSb often results in out-diffusion of indium, a p-type dopant. By growing α\alpha-Sn via molecular beam epitaxy on the Sb-rich c(4×\times4) surface reconstruction of InSb(001) rather than the In-rich c(8×\times2), we demonstrate a route to substantially decrease and minimize this indium incorporation. The reduction in indium concentration allows for the study of the surface and bulk Dirac nodes in α\alpha-Sn via angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy without the common approaches of bulk doping or surface dosing, simplifying topological phase identification. The lack of indium incorporation is verified in angle-resolved and -integrated ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy as well as in clear changes in the Hall response

    The C-Terminal Fragment of Prostate-Specific Antigen, a 2331 Da Peptide, as a New Urinary Pathognomonic Biomarker Candidate for Diagnosing Prostate Cancer

    Background and Objectives: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers and leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men. Mass screening has been carried out since the 1990s using prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in the serum as a PCa biomarker. However, although PSA is an excellent organ-specific marker, it is not a cancer-specific marker. Therefore, the aim of this study was to discover new biomarkers for the diagnosis of PCa. Materials and Methods: We focused on urine samples voided following prostate massage (digital rectal examination [DRE]) and conducted a peptidomic analysis of these samples using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS_n). Urinary biomaterials were concentrated and desalted using CM-Sepharose prior to the following analyses being performed by MALDI-TOF/MS_n: 1) differential analyses of mass spectra; 2) determination of amino acid sequences; and 3) quantitative analyses using a stable isotope-labeled internal standard. Results: Multivariate analysis of the MALDI-TOF/MS mass spectra of urinary extracts revealed a 2331 Da peptide in urine samples following DRE. This peptide was identified as a C-terminal PSA fragment composed of 19 amino acid residues. Moreover, quantitative analysis of the relationship between isotope-labeled synthetic and intact peptides using MALDI-TOF/MS revealed that this peptide may be a new pathognomonic biomarker candidate that can differentiate PCa patients from non-cancer subjects. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that the 2331 Da peptide fragment of PSA may become a new pathognomonic biomarker for the diagnosis of PCa. A further large-scale investigation is currently underway to assess the possibility of using this peptide in the early detection of PCa

    A Case of Dermatomyositis with Severe Myalgia and Muscle Weakness Testing Positive for Anti-melanoma Differentiation-associated Gene 5 Antibody

    We report a case of a woman with typical dermatomyositis (DM) with skin manifestations, severe myalgia and muscle weakness complicated by interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pneumomediastinum. Pneumomediastinum persisted despite treatment with immunosuppressive therapy (steroids and cyclosporine). After the test for anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibody came out positive, we doubled the cyclosporine dose and her condition improved. Despite typical clinical features of DM, in cases complicated by pneumomediastinum or steroid resistance, measurement of anti-MDA5 antibody may be useful for immunosuppressant dose titration
