    Learning masculinities in a Japanese high school rugby club

    This paper draws on research conducted on a Tokyo high school rugby club to explore diversity in the masculinities formed through membership in the club. Based on the premise that particular forms of masculinity are expressed and learnt through ways of playing (game style) and the attendant regimes of training, it examines the expression and learning of masculinities at three analytic levels. It identifies a hegemonic, culture-specific form of masculinity operating in Japanese high school rugby, a class-influenced variation of it at the institutional level of the school and, by further tightening its analytic focus, further variation at an individual level. In doing so this paper highlights the ways in which diversity in the masculinities constructed through contact sports can be obfuscated by a reductionist view of there being only one, universal hegemonic patterns of masculinity

    Magnetic-Field-Induced Antiferromagnetism in Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model: Analysis of CeRhIn5_5

    We propose the mechanism for the magnetic-field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) state in a two-dimensional Hubbard model in the vicinity of the AFM quantum critical point (QCP), using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation by taking the Zeeman energy due to the magnetic field BB into account. In the vicinity of the QCP, we find that the AFM correlation perpendicular to BB is enhanced, whereas that parallel to BB is reduced. This fact means that the finite magnetic field increases TNT_N, with the AFM order perpendicular to BB. The increment in TNT_N can be understood in terms of the reduction of both quantum and thermal fluctuations due to the magnetic field, which is caused by the self-energy effect within the FLEX approximation. The present study naturally explains the increment in TNT_N in CeRhIn_5 under the magnetic field found recently.Comment: 5 page

    Teacher-student interaction, empathy and their influence on learning in swimming lessons

    The bulk of interest in the role that interaction plays in learning in sport and physical education has focused on peer interaction at the expense of teacher-student interaction. This article redresses this imbalance in the literature by reporting on a study that inquired into the nature of teacher-student interaction and its effect on learning in physical education swimming lessons in a French secondary school. Informed by an enactivist conceptualization of learning, it emphasizes the subjective dynamics of interaction to suggest that patterns of coordination should not be seen as being predetermined and determining student learning but, instead, as forms of engagement that influence, and are influenced by, the dynamics of interaction. In doing so it suggests the pivotal importance of teacher empathy for student learning through interaction in physical education

    An International Analysis of the Maturity of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems Use

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems dominate the Information Technology (IT) landscape of global companies. Organisations are at different stages in the implementation process ranging from the initial strategic analysis of implementation options, through completed standard implementations and to the sophisticated exploitation of ERP systems using advanced knowledge management, decision support and supply chain management systems. There are also variances in the perspective of managers regarding the strategic potential of ERP systems. We present a maturity model for ERP systems that identifies three key implementation stages. The model is illustrated using case data from 24 organisations in the US and Europe. In stage one, organisations are managing legacy systems and starting the ERP project. In stage two, implementation is complete and the functionality of the ERP system is being exploited across the organisation. In stage three, organisations have normalised the ERP system into the organisation and are engaged in the process of obtaining strategic value from the system by using additional ‘satellite’ systems including knowledge management and supply chain planning. It is shown that the organisations follow an S shaped curve, and that most companies are in the middle stage

    Co-design and robots: A case study of a robot dog for aging people

    © Springer International Publishing AG 2016. The day-to-day experiences of aging citizens differ significantly from young, technologically savvy engineers. Yet, well-meaning engineers continue to design technologies for aging citizens, informed by skewed stereotypes of aging without deep engagements from these users. This paper describes a co-design project based on the principles of Participatory Design that sought to provide aging people with the capacity to co-design technologies that suit their needs. The project combined the design intuitions of both participants and designers, on equal footing, to produce a companion robot in the form of a networked robotic dog. Besides evaluating a productive approach that empowers aging people in the process of co-designing and evaluating technologies for themselves, this paper presents a viable solution that is playful and meaningful to these elderly people; capable of enhancing their independence, social agency and well-being

    Practices of readiness: punctuation, poise and the contingencies of participatory design

    How do we ready ourselves to intervene responsively in the contingent situations that arise in co-designing to make change? How do we attune to group dynamics and respond ethically to unpredictable developments when working with ‘community’? Participatory Design (PD) can contribute to social transitions, yet its focus is often tightly tuned to technique for designing ICT at the cost of participatory practice. We challenge PD conventions by addressing what happens as we step into a situation to alter it with others, an aspect of practice that cannot be replicated or interchanged. We do so to argue that practices of readiness are constituted by personal histories, experiences, philosophies and culture. We demonstrate this political argument by giving reflexive accounts of our dimensions of preparation. The narratives here are distinct, yet reveal complementary theories and worldviews that shape PD ontologies. We have organized these around the qualities of punctuation and poise as a way to draw out some less easily articulated aspects of PD practice

    Conductance distribution between Hall plateaus

    Mesoscopic fluctuations of two-port conductance and four-port resistance between Hall plateaus are studied within a realistic model for a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field and a smooth disordered potential. The two-port conductance distribution P(g)P(g) is concave between g=0g=0 and g=1g=1 and is nearly flat between g=0.2g=0.2 and g=0.8g=0.8. These characteristics are consistent with recent observations. The distribution is found to be sharply peaked near the end-points g=0g=0 and g=1g=1. The distribution functions for the three independent resistances in a four-port Hall bar geometry are, on the other hand, characterized by a central peak and a relatively large width.Comment: 11 pages, 5 ps figures, submitted to Phys.     Movement variability in stroke patients and controls performing two upper limb functional tasks: a new assessment methodology

    Background: In the evaluation of upper limb impairment post stroke there remains a gap between detailed kinematic analyses with expensive motion capturing systems and common clinical assessment tests. In particular, although many clinical tests evaluate the performance of functional tasks, metrics to characterise upper limb kinematics are generally not applicable to such tasks and very limited in scope. This paper reports on a novel, user-friendly methodology that allows for the assessment of both signal magnitude and timing variability in upper limb movement trajectories during functional task performance. In order to demonstrate the technique, we report on a study in which the variability in timing and signal magnitude of data collected during the performance of two functional tasks is compared between a group of subjects with stroke and a group of individually matched control subjects. Methods: We employ dynamic time warping for curve registration to quantify two aspects of movement variability: 1) variability of the timing of the accelerometer signals' characteristics and 2) variability of the signals' magnitude. Six stroke patients and six matched controls performed several trials of a unilateral ('drinking') and a bilateral ('moving a plate') functional task on two different days, approximately 1 month apart. Group differences for the two variability metrics were investigated on both days. Results: For 'drinking from a glass' significant group differences were obtained on both days for the timing variability of the acceleration signals' characteristics (p = 0.002 and p = 0.008 for test and retest, respectively); all stroke patients showed increased signal timing variability as compared to their corresponding control subject. 'Moving a plate' provided less distinct group differences. Conclusion: This initial application establishes that movement variability metrics, as determined by our methodology, appear different in stroke patients as compared to matched controls during unilateral task performance ('drinking'). Use of a user-friendly, inexpensive accelerometer makes this methodology feasible for routine clinical evaluations. We are encouraged to perform larger studies to further investigate the metrics' usefulness when quantifying levels of impairment
