    A Measurement of the D±D^{*\pm} Cross Section in Two-Photon Processes

    We have measured the inclusive D±D^{*\pm} production cross section in a two-photon collision at the TRISTAN e+ee^+e^- collider. The mean s\sqrt{s} of the collider was 57.16 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 150 pb1pb^{-1}. The differential cross section (dσ(D±)/dPTd\sigma(D^{*\pm})/dP_T) was obtained in the PTP_T range between 1.6 and 6.6 GeV and compared with theoretical predictions, such as those involving direct and resolved photon processes.Comment: 8 pages, Latex format (article), figures corrected, published in Phys.     In-situ X-ray computed tomography characterisation of 3D fracture evolution and image-based numerical homogenisation of concrete

    In-situ micro X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) tests of concrete cubes under progressive compressive loading were carried out to study 3D fracture evolution. Both direct segmentation of the tomography and digital volume correlation (DVC) mapping of the displacement field were used to characterise the fracture evolution. Realistic XCT-image based finite element (FE) models under periodic boundaries were built for asymptotic homogenisation of elastic properties of the concrete cube with Young’s moduli of cement and aggregates measured by micro-indentation tests. It is found that the elastic moduli obtained from the DVC analysis and the FE homogenisation are comparable and both within the Reuss-Voigt theoretical bounds, and these advanced techniques (in-situ XCT, DVC, micro-indentation and image-based simulations) offer highly-accurate, complementary functionalities for both qualitative understanding of complex 3D damage and fracture evolution and quantitative evaluation of key material properties of concrete

    A systematic review of musculoskeletal disorders among school teachers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) represent one of the most common and most expensive occupational health problems in both developed and developing countries. School teachers represent an occupational group among which there appears to be a high prevalence of MSD. Given that causes of MSD have been described as multi-factorial and prevalence rates vary between body sites and location of study, the objective of this systematic review was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for MSD among teaching staff.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study involved an extensive search of MEDLINE and EMBASE databases in 2011. All studies which reported on the prevalence and/or risk factors for MSD in the teaching profession were initially selected for inclusion. Reference lists of articles identified in the original search were then examined for additional publications. Of the 80 articles initially located, a final group of 33 met the inclusion criteria and were examined in detail.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This review suggests that the prevalence of self-reported MSD among school teachers ranges between 39% and 95%. The most prevalent body sites appear to be the back, neck and upper limbs. Nursery school teachers appear to be more likely to report suffering from low back pain. Factors such as gender, age, length of employment and awkward posture have been associated with higher MSD prevalence rates.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Overall, this study suggests that school teachers are at a high risk of MSD. Further research, preferably longitudinal, is required to more thoroughly investigate the issue of MSD among teachers, with a greater emphasis on the possible wider use of ergonomic principles. This would represent a major step forward in the prevention of MSD among teachers, especially if easy to implement control measures could be recommended.</p

    Increasing the source/sink ratio in Vitis vinifera (cv Sangiovese) induces extensive transcriptome reprogramming and modifies berry ripening

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cluster thinning is an agronomic practice in which a proportion of berry clusters are removed from the vine to increase the source/sink ratio and improve the quality of the remaining berries. Until now no transcriptomic data have been reported describing the mechanisms that underlie the agronomic and biochemical effects of thinning.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We profiled the transcriptome of <it>Vitis vinifera </it>cv. Sangiovese berries before and after thinning at veraison using a genome-wide microarray representing all grapevine genes listed in the latest V1 gene prediction. Thinning increased the source/sink ratio from 0.6 to 1.2 m<sup>2 </sup>leaf area per kg of berries and boosted the sugar and anthocyanin content at harvest. Extensive transcriptome remodeling was observed in thinned vines 2 weeks after thinning and at ripening. This included the enhanced modulation of genes that are normally regulated during berry development and the induction of a large set of genes that are not usually expressed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Cluster thinning has a profound effect on several important cellular processes and metabolic pathways including carbohydrate metabolism and the synthesis and transport of secondary products. The integrated agronomic, biochemical and transcriptomic data revealed that the positive impact of cluster thinning on final berry composition reflects a much more complex outcome than simply enhancing the normal ripening process.</p

    Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA

    Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the γp\gamma p centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil

    In-situ investigation of unidirectional solidification in Sn-0.7Cu and Sn-0.7Cu-0.06Ni

    The dynamics of off-eutectic solidification are studied in two Pb-free solders using synchrotron X-ray radiography and post mortem scanning electron microscopy. The early stages of growth revealed the onset of coupled growth and phase competition. In Sn-0.7 wt.% Cu, the βSn-CuSn eutectic then grew with CuSn rods leading the βSn phase, with a range of rod spacings and local interface curvatures. However, these nonfaceted-faceted eutectic features were exhibited much more weakly than in the Al-Si and Fe-C eutectics, despite primary CuSn crystals exhibiting marked faceting. In Sn-0.7 wt.% Cu-0.06 wt.% Ni, primary intermetallic laths grew ahead of a rod-like βSn-(Cu,Ni)Sn univariant eutectic front. The univariant eutectic had a narrow freezing range and a similar spacing to the invariant eutectic at the same velocity. Composition measurements suggest that the univariant eutectic groove descends in the direction of the Sn + CuSn binary eutectic point
