    A three-dimensional multidimensional gas-kinetic scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations under gravitational fields

    This paper extends the gas-kinetic scheme for one-dimensional inviscid shallow water equations (J. Comput. Phys. 178 (2002), pp. 533-562) to multidimensional gas dynamic equations under gravitational fields. Four important issues in the construction of a well-balanced scheme for gas dynamic equations are addressed. First, the inclusion of the gravitational source term into the flux function is necessary. Second, to achieve second-order accuracy of a well-balanced scheme, the Chapman-Enskog expansion of the Boltzmann equation with the inclusion of the external force term is used. Third, to avoid artificial heating in an isolated system under a gravitational field, the source term treatment inside each cell has to be evaluated consistently with the flux evaluation at the cell interface. Fourth, the multidimensional approach with the inclusion of tangential gradients in two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases becomes important in order to maintain the accuracy of the scheme. Many numerical examples are used to validate the above issues, which include the comparison between the solutions from the current scheme and the Strang splitting method.     Stimulated emission from semi-polar (11-22) GaN overgrown on sapphire

    (11-22) semi-polar GaN is expected to exhibit major advantages compared with current c-plane polar GaN in the fabrication of long wavelength such as green and yellow emitters. However, all the III-nitride based semi-/non- polar laser diodes (LDs) reported so far have been achieved exclusively based on homo-epitaxial growth on extremely expensive free-standing GaN substrates with a very limited size. In this paper, we have observed a stimulated emission at room temperature achieved on our semi-polar (11-22) GaN overgrown on a micro-rod arrayed template with an optimized design on m-plane sapphire. This has never been achieved previously on any semi-polar GaN grown on sapphire. Furthermore, an optical gain of 130cm−1 has been measured by means of performing a standard laser stripe-length dependent optical measurement. The values of the threshold and the optical gain obtained are comparable to those of the c-plane GaN reported so far, further validating the satisfactory crystal quality of our overgrown semi-polar (11-22) GaN on sapphire. This represents a major step towards the development of III-nitride semi-polar based LDs on sapphire, especially in the long wavelength regime

    Characterizations of Cross-Bridges in the Presence of Saturating Concentrations of MgAMP-PNP in Rabbit Permeabilized Psoas Muscle

    Several earlier studies have led to different conclusions about the complex of myosin with MgAMP-PNP. It has been suggested that subfragment 1 of myosin (S1)-MgAMP-PNP forms an S1-MgADP-like state, an intermediate between the myosin S1-MgATP and myosin S1-MgADP states or a mixture of cross-bridge states. We suggest that the different states observed result from the failure to saturate S1 with MgAMP-PNP. At saturating MgAMP-PNP, the interaction of myosin S1 with actin is very similar to that which occurs in the presence of MgATP. 1) At 1°C and 170 mM ionic strength the equatorial x-ray diffraction intensity ratio I11/I10 decreased with an increasing MgAMP-PNP concentration and leveled off by ĂąË†ÂŒ20 mM MgAMP-PNP. The resulting ratio was the same for MgATP-relaxed fibers. 2) The two dimensional x-ray diffraction patterns from MgATP-relaxed and MgAMP-PNP-relaxed bundles are similar. 3) The affinity of S1-MgAMP-PNP for the actin-tropomyosin-troponin complex in solution in the absence of free calcium is comparable with that of S1-MgATP. 4) In the presence of calcium, I11/I10 decreased toward the relaxed value with increasing MgAMP-PNP, signifying that the affinity between cross-bridge and actin is weakened by MgAMP-PNP. 5) The degree to which the equatorial intensity ratio decreases as the ionic strength increases is similar in MgAMP-PNP and MgATP. Therefore, results from both fiber and solution studies suggest that MgAMP-PNP acts as a non hydrolyzable MgATP analogue for myosin

    Long-range quantum discord in critical spin systems

    We show that quantum correlations as quantified by quantum discord can characterize quantum phase transitions by exhibiting nontrivial long-range decay as a function of distance in spin systems. This is rather different from the behavior of pairwise entanglement, which is typically short-ranged even in critical systems. In particular, we find a clear change in the decay rate of quantum discord as the system crosses a quantum critical point. We illustrate this phenomenon for first-order, second-order, and infinite-order quantum phase transitions, indicating that pairwise quantum discord is an appealing quantum correlation function for condensed matter systems

    Adiponectin Prevents Diabetic Premature Senescence of Endothelial Progenitor Cells and Promotes Endothelial Repair by Suppressing the p38 MAP Kinase/p16INK4A Signaling Pathway

    OBJECTIVE - A reduced number of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are casually associated with the cardiovascular complication of diabetes. Adiponectin exerts multiple protective effects against cardiovascular disease, independent of its insulin-sensitizing activity. The objective of this study was to investigate whether adiponectin plays a role in modulating the bioavailability of circulating EPCs and endothelial repair. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - Adiponectin knockout mice were crossed with db+/- mice to produce db/db diabetic mice without adiponectin. Circulating number of EPCs were analyzed by flow cytometry. Reendothelialization was evaluated by staining with Evans blue after wire-induced carotid injury. RESULTS - In adiponectin knockout mice, the number of circulating EPCs decreased in an age-dependent manner compared with the wild-type controls, and this difference was reversed by the chronic infusion of recombinant adiponectin. In db/db diabetic mice, the lack of adiponectin aggravated the hyperglycemia-induced decrease in circulating EPCs and also diminished the stimulatory effects of the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone on EPC production and reendothelialization. In EPCs isolated from both human peripheral blood and mouse bone marrow, treatment with adiponectin prevented high glucose-induced premature senescence. At the molecular level, adiponectin decreased high glucose-induced accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species and consequently suppressed activation of p38 MAP kinase (MAPK) and expression of the senescence marker p16INK4A. CONCLUSIONS - Adiponectin prevents EPC senescence by inhibiting the ROS/p38 MAPK/p16 INK4A signaling cascade. The protective effects of adiponectin against diabetes vascular complications are attributed in part to its ability to counteract hyperglycemia-mediated decrease in the number of circulating EPCs. © 2010 by the American Diabetes Association.published_or_final_versio

    Dynamics of multipartite quantum correlations under decoherence

    Quantum discord is an optimal resource for the quantification of classical and non-classical correlations as compared to other related measures. Geometric measure of quantum discord is another measure of quantum correlations. Recently, the geometric quantum discord for multipartite states has been introduced by Jianwei Xu [arxiv:quant/ph.1205.0330]. Motivated from the recent study [Ann. Phys. 327 (2012) 851] for the bipartite systems, I have investigated global quantum discord (QD) and geometric quantum discord (GQD) under the influence of external environments for different multipartite states. Werner-GHZ type three-qubit and six-qubit states are considered in inertial and non-inertial settings. The dynamics of QD and GQD is investigated under amplitude damping, phase damping, depolarizing and flipping channels. It is seen that the quantum discord vanishes for p>0.75 in case of three-qubit GHZ states and for p>0.5 for six qubit GHZ states. This implies that multipartite states are more fragile to decoherence for higher values of N. Surprisingly, a rapid sudden death of discord occurs in case of phase flip channel. However, for bit flip channel, no sudden death happens for the six-qubit states. On the other hand, depolarizing channel heavily influences the QD and GQD as compared to the amplitude damping channel. It means that the depolarizing channel has the most destructive influence on the discords for multipartite states. From the perspective of accelerated observers, it is seen that effect of environment on QD and GQD is much stronger than that of the acceleration of non-inertial frames. The degradation of QD and GQD happens due to Unruh effect. Furthermore, QD exhibits more robustness than GQD when the multipartite systems are exposed to environment.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 4 table

    Non-Equilibrium Quasiclassical Theory for Josephson Structures

    We present a non-equilibrium quasiclassical formalism suitable for studying linear response ac properties of Josephson junctions. The non-equilibrium self-consistency equations are satisfied, to very good accuracy, already in zeroth iteration. We use the formalism to study ac Josephson effect in a ballistic superconducting point contact. The real and imaginary parts of the ac linear conductance are calculated both analytically (at low frequencies) and numerically (at arbitrary frequency). They show strong temperature, frequency, and phase dependence. Many anomalous properties appear near phi = pi.     Sexual violence against women and children in Chinese societies

    This article provides a comprehensive overview of the reported patterns of sexual violence against women and children in China. It reviews the prevalence of and risk factors for various types of sexual violence and discusses community knowledge and perceptions of these violent acts. It also critically examines three major problems of sexual violence research in China. First, the diversity of findings and study methods reported by surveys and criminal reports reflects the problems in obtaining accurate figures on the scope of the problem. Second, precautions must be taken in reading studies on Chinese culture-specific risk factors for domestic violence. Third, the study of culture-specific factors should not focus solely on cultural factors in a vacuum but rather, should examine traditional culture in the context of modern societies and consensus international standards of human rights.     Measurement of \Gamma(\eta -> \pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\Gamma(\eta -> \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0) with the KLOE Detector

    The ratio R_{\eta}=\Gamma(\eta -> \pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\Gamma(\eta -> \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0) has been measured by analyzing 22 million \phi \to \eta \gamma decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DA\PhiNE, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb^{-1}. The \eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma proceeds both via the \rho resonant contribution, and possibly a non-resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. Our result, R_{\eta}= 0.1856\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0028_{syst}, points out a sizable contribution of the direct term to the total width. The di-pion invariant mass for the \eta -> \pi^+\pi^-\gamma decay could be described in a model-independent approach in terms of a single free parameter, \alpha.
