Moisture content-affected electrokinetic remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated clay by a hydrocalumite barrier

    No full text
An electrokinetic–permeable reaction barrier (EKPRB) system was introduced in this study with hydrocalumite as the barrier material. The combined system effectively remediated the Cr(VI)-contaminated clay after a 72-h treatment, and the Cr(VI) removal efficiency increased with the initial soil moisture content. Further evidence was found that the changing soil pH value and current density were highly associated with the initial moisture content, showing its important roles in the Cr(VI) removal process. Additionally, the total Cr removal efficiency was much lower than that of Cr(VI) owing to the partial conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the electrokinetic remediation process. Under high soil moisture conditions (40 %), the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) and total Cr was 96.6 and 67.3 %, respectively. Further analysis also revealed the new mineral phase, chromate hydrocalumite, for Cr fixation in the hydrocalumite barrier, which was significantly affected by the initial soil moisture content. Our results showed that the EK-PRB system with a hydrocalumite barrier is highly promising with great potential for the effective remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated clay and engineering implementation

Abstract Background To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of premature thelarche (PT) in girls and gynecomastia (GM) in boys in Southern China. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of preschool children across 9 cities in Zhejiang province. A total of 6273 children in the age-group of 2–7 years were recruited from January 2014 to March 2015. Relevant information was collected from mothers through face-to-face interviews. Logistic regression models were used to examine the correlates of PT and GM. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are reported. Results The prevalence of PT among girls was 4.8% and that of GM among boys was 0.8%. One hundred girls were diagnosed with PT before the age of 2 years; 69 (69.0%) of these girls experienced spontaneous resolution of PT. Twenty-four boys were diagnosed with GM before the age of 2 years; 10 (41.7%) of these experienced spontaneous resolution of GM. Children borne of mothers with early onset of menarche and those belonging to high-income families were at a higher risk of premature breast development. Greater consumption of eggs was associated with premature breast development in early childhood. Conclusions Socioeconomic status of family, early onset of menarche in mother, and consumption of eggs were strongly associated with premature breast development in early childhood

Due to the importance and complexity of water resources regulations in the pond irrigation systems of the Jiang-Huai hilly regions, a water allocation simulation model for pond irrigation districts based on system simulation theory was developed in this study. To maximize agricultural irrigation benefits while guaranteeing rural domestic water demand, an optimal water resources regulation model for pond irrigation districts and a simulation-based optimal water resources regulation technology system for the pond irrigation system were developed. Using this system, it was determined that the suitable pond coverage rate (pond capacity per unit area) was 2.92 × 105 m3/km2. Suitable water supply and operational rules for adjusting crop planting structure were also developed the water-saving irrigation method and irrigation system. To guarantee rural domestic water demand, the multi-year average total irrigation water deficit of the study area decreased by 4.66 × 104 m3/km2; the average multi-year water deficit ratio decreased from 20.40% to 1.18%; the average multi-year irrigation benefit increased by 1.11 × 105 RMB (16,128$)/km2; and the average multi-year revenue increased by 6.69%. Both the economic and social benefits were significant. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis and technological support for comprehensive pone governance in the Jiang-Huai hilly regions and promote the establishment of a water allocation scheme and irrigation system for pond irrigation districts, which have practical significance and important application value

Cysteine-Functionalized Metal–Organic Framework: Facile Synthesis and High Efficient Enrichment of N‑Linked Glycopeptides in Cell Lysate

Cysteine-functionalized metal–organic framework (MOF) was synthesized via a common and facile two-step method of in situ loading of Au nanoparticles on amino-derived MOF followed by l-cysteine (Cys) immobilization. Owing to the large specific surface area and ultrahigh hydrophilicity of this nanocomposite, excellent performance was observed in the enrichment of N-linked glycopeptides in both model glycoprotein and HeLa cell lysate. By using this nanocomposite, 16 and 31 glycopeptides were efficiently extracted from digest of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and human serum immunoglobulin G (IgG), respectively. The short incubation time (5 min), large binding capacity (150 mg/g, IgG digest to material), good selectivity (1:50, molar ratio of IgG and bovine serum albumin (BSA) digest), high recovery (over 80%), and low detection limit (1 fmol) ensure the effectiveness and robustness of MIL-101(NH2)@Au-Cys in complex HeLa cell lysate. As a result, 1123 N-glycosylation sites corresponding to 1069 N-glycopeptides and 614 N-glycoproteins were identified from the lysate. Compared with those of previously reported hydrophilic methods, to our knowledge, it was the best result. This work paves a new way for fast functionalization of MOF and also provides a novel idea for material design in sample preparation, especially in glycoproteome and related analysis
