    Synthesis and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic materials based on sulphonated polyamideimide and silica

    The preparation of hybrid organic–inorganic membrane materials based on a sulphonated polyamideimide resin and silica filler has been studied. The method allows the sol–gel process to proceed in the presence of a high molecular weight polyamideimide, resulting in well dispersed silica nanoparticles (<50 nm) within the polymer matrix with chemical bonding between the organic and inorganic phases. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was used as the silica precursor and the organosilicate networks were bonded to the polymer matrix via a coupling agent aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTrEOS). The structure and properties of these hybrid materials were characterized via a range of techniques including FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM and contact angle analysis. It was found that the compatibility between organic and inorganic phases has been greatly enhanced by the incorporation of APTrEOS. The thermal stability and hydrophilic properties of hybrid materials have also been significantly improved

    On the selection and design of proteins and peptide derivatives for the production of photoluminescent, red-emitting gold quantum clusters

    Novel pathways of the synthesis of photoluminescent gold quantum clusters (AuQCs) using biomolecules as reactants provide biocompatible products for biological imaging techniques. In order to rationalize the rules for the preparation of red-emitting AuQCs in aqueous phase using proteins or peptides, the role of different organic structural units was investigated. Three systems were studied: proteins, peptides, and amino acid mixtures, respectively. We have found that cysteine and tyrosine are indispensable residues. The SH/S-S ratio in a single molecule is not a critical factor in the synthesis, but on the other hand, the stoichiometry of cysteine residues and the gold precursor is crucial. These observations indicate the importance of proper chemical behavior of all species in a wide size range extending from the atomic distances (in the AuI-S semi ring) to nanometer distances covering the larger sizes of proteins assuring the hierarchical structure of the whole self-assembled system

    Structural recombination of polymethylsilicone induced by laser plasma

    A special synthetic reaction has been developed, in which vapor of the reactant interacts with the high temperature plasma generated by laser ablating a graphite target. By selecting chained methylsilicone as reactant, a series of methylsilsesquioxanes products with various structural configurations have been obtained. Among them, two products, which were separated by sublimation in high vacuum and recrystalization, were characterized by X - ray crystal diffraction as (CH3SiO1.5)(n)(n = 8, 10). Both of them are found to have three - dimensional cage structure. In addition, other products with double ring structure were detected by GC - MS analysis. The results demonstrate the potential application of the synthetic reaction. In the reaction described in this article, resulting from the collision and energy - transfer of the laser plasma, chain structure of the reactant dissociated and recombined to give the cage and ring structure of the products

    Down regulation of E-Cadherin (ECAD) - a predictor for occult metastatic disease in sentinel node biopsy of early squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Prognostic factors in predicting occult lymph node metastasis in patients with head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are necessary to improve the results of the sentinel lymph node procedure in this tumour type. The E-Cadherin glycoprotein is an intercellular adhesion molecule in epithelial cells, which plays an important role in establishing and maintaining intercellular connections.</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>To determine the value of the molecular marker E-Cadherin in predicting regional metastatic disease.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>E-Cadherin expression in tumour tissue of 120 patients with HNSCC of the oral cavity and oropharynx were evaluated using the tissue microarray technique. 110 tumours were located in the oral cavity (91.7%; mostly tongue), 10 tumours in the oropharynx (8.3%). Intensity of E-Cadherin expression was quantified by the Intensity Reactivity Score (IRS). These results were correlated with the lymph node status of biopsied sentinel lymph nodes. Univariate and multivariate analysis was used to determine statistical significance.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>pT-stage, gender, tumour side and location did not correlate with lymph node metastasis. Differentiation grade (<it>p </it>= 0.018) and down regulation of E-Cadherin expression significantly correlate with positive lymph node status (<it>p </it>= 0.005) in univariate and multivariate analysis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These data suggest that loss of E-cadherin expression is associated with increased lymhogeneous metastasis of HNSCC. E-cadherin immunohistochemistry may be used as a predictor for lymph node metastasis in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx.</p> <p><b>Level of evidence: 2b</b></p

    Measurement of the top quark mass using the matrix element technique in dilepton final states

    We present a measurement of the top quark mass in pp¯ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data were collected by the D0 experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.7  fb−1. The matrix element technique is applied to tt¯ events in the final state containing leptons (electrons or muons) with high transverse momenta and at least two jets. The calibration of the jet energy scale determined in the lepton+jets final state of tt¯ decays is applied to jet energies. This correction provides a substantial reduction in systematic uncertainties. We obtain a top quark mass of mt=173.93±1.84  GeV

    Efficient control of atmospheric sulfate production based on three formation regimes

    The formation of sulfate (SO₄²⁻) in the atmosphere is linked chemically to its direct precursor, sulfur dioxide (SO₂), through several key oxidation paths for which nitrogen oxides or NO_x (NO and NO₂) play essential roles. Here we present a coherent description of the dependence of SO₄²⁻ formation on SO₂ and NO_x under haze-fog conditions, in which fog events are accompanied by high aerosol loadings and fog-water pH in the range of 4.7–6.9. Three SO₄²⁻ formation regimes emerge as defined by the role played by NO_x. In the low-NO_x regime, NO_x act as catalyst for HO_x, which is a major oxidant for SO₂, whereas in the high-NO_x regime, NO₂ is a sink for HO_x. Moreover, at highly elevated NO_x levels, a so-called NO₂-oxidant regime exists in which aqueous NO₂ serves as the dominant oxidant of SO₂. This regime also exists under clean fog conditions but is less prominent. Sensitivity calculations using an emission-driven box model show that the reduction of SO₄²⁻ is comparably sensitive to the reduction of SO₂ and NO_x emissions in the NO₂-oxidant regime, suggesting a co-reduction strategy. Formation of SO₄²⁻ is relatively insensitive to NO_x reduction in the low-NO_x regime, whereas reduction of NO_x actually leads to increased SO₄²⁻ production in the intermediate high-NO_x regime

    Life Events, Coping, and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms among Chinese Adolescents Exposed to 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, China

    PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between negative life events, coping styles, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among adolescent survivors exposed to 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, China. METHODS: A survey was conducted in a sample of 2250 adolescent students from two schools in Dujiangyan District, a seriously damaged area, 20 kilometers away from the epicenter, 6 months after the earthquake. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire including demographics, negative life events, coping styles, and PTSD symptoms. RESULTS: Academic pressure was the strongest predictor of adolescents' PTSD symptoms among all negative life events. Main effects of negative life events, positive coping and negative coping on PTSD symptoms were significant in both younger adolescents and older adolescents, while the moderator effects of two coping styles were found significant only within older adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: Coping may play a role to moderate the relationship between post-earthquake negative life events and PTSD symptom, but the function seems to depend on the age of participants. Psychosocial coping skills training may be important in the prevention and intervention of mental health problems in adolescent survivors of traumatic earthquake
