    Sub-percentage measure of distances to redshift of 0.1 by a new cosmic ruler

    Distance-redshift diagrams probe expansion history of the Universe. We show that the stellar mass-binding energy (massE) relation of galaxies proposed in our previous study offers a new distance ruler at cosmic scales. By using elliptical galaxies in the main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we construct a distance-redshift diagram over the redshift range from 0.05 to 0.2 with the massE ruler. The best-fit dark energy density is 0.675+-0.079 for flat Lambda-CDM, consistent with those by other probes. At the median redshift of 0.11, the median distance is estimated to have a fractional error of 0.34%, much lower than those by supernova (SN) Ia and baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) and even exceeding their future capability at this redshift. The above low-z measurement is useful for probing dark energy that dominates at the late Universe. For a flat dark energy equation of state model (flat wCDM), the massE alone constrains w to an error that is only a factor of 2.2, 1.7 and 1.3 times larger than those by BAO, SN Ia, and cosmic microwave background (CMB), respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS in press.     Regulation of welding residual stress in laser-welded AISI 304 steel-niobium joints using a Cu interlayer

    Residual stress and deformation in a welded joint will significantly reduce its service life, and thus the analysis and regulation of residual stresses are very important. In this paper, a SYSWELD software was used to numerically simulate the temperature field, residual stress field, and the welding deformation during welding with and without a Cu interlayer. Thermocouples were used to measure the thermal cycle curves, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to measure the residual stresses of the joints. The results show that the addition of a Cu interlayer does not significantly change the temperature field, and that the high temperature region on the niobium side is wider. In addition, the peak temperature in the centre of the welds and the temperature gradient perpendicular to the weld are greatly reduced by a Cu interlayer. Furthermore, a Cu interlayer contributes to a certain increase in both transverse and longitudinal residual stresses. Because the weld involves three different materials, steel, niobium, and Cu, the residual stresses in the welds are more complex. The simulation of the welding deformation shows that the transverse shrinkage in the thickness direction can be homogenized by the Cu interlayer, which leads to a significant reduction in deformation.acceptedVersio

    Simplified HIV Testing and Treatment in China: Analysis of Mortality Rates Before and After a Structural Intervention.

    BackgroundMultistage stepwise HIV testing and treatment initiation procedures can result in lost opportunities to provide timely antiretroviral therapy (ART). Incomplete patient engagement along the continuum of HIV care translates into high levels of preventable mortality. We aimed to evaluate the ability of a simplified test and treat structural intervention to reduce mortality.Methods and findingsIn the "pre-intervention 2010" (from January 2010 to December 2010) and "pre-intervention 2011" (from January 2011 to December 2011) phases, patients who screened HIV-positive at health care facilities in Zhongshan and Pubei counties in Guangxi, China, followed the standard-of-care process. In the "post-intervention 2012" (from July 2012 to June 2013) and "post-intervention 2013" (from July 2013 to June 2014) phases, patients who screened HIV-positive at the same facilities were offered a simplified test and treat intervention, i.e., concurrent HIV confirmatory and CD4 testing and immediate initiation of ART, irrespective of CD4 count. Participants were followed for 6-18 mo until the end of their study phase period. Mortality rates in the pre-intervention and post-intervention phases were compared for all HIV cases and for treatment-eligible HIV cases. A total of 1,034 HIV-positive participants (281 and 339 in the two pre-intervention phases respectively, and 215 and 199 in the two post-intervention phases respectively) were enrolled. Following the structural intervention, receipt of baseline CD4 testing within 30 d of HIV confirmation increased from 67%/61% (pre-intervention 2010/pre-intervention 2011) to 98%/97% (post-intervention 2012/post-intervention 2013) (all p < 0.001 [i.e., for all comparisons between a pre- and post-intervention phase]), and the time from HIV confirmation to ART initiation decreased from 53 d (interquartile range [IQR] 27-141)/43 d (IQR 15-113) to 5 d (IQR 2-12)/5 d (IQR 2-13) (all p < 0.001). Initiation of ART increased from 27%/49% to 91%/89% among all cases (all p < 0.001) and from 39%/62% to 94%/90% among individuals with CD4 count ≤ 350 cells/mm3 or AIDS (all p < 0.001). Mortality decreased from 27%/27% to 10%/10% for all cases (all p < 0.001) and from 40%/35% to 13%/13% for cases with CD4 count ≤ 350 cells/mm3 or AIDS (all p < 0.001). The simplified test and treat intervention was significantly associated with decreased mortality rates compared to pre-intervention 2011 (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.385 [95% CI 0.239-0.620] and 0.380 [95% CI 0.233-0.618] for the two post-intervention phases, respectively, for all newly diagnosed HIV cases [both p < 0.001], and aHR 0.369 [95% CI 0.226-0.603] and 0.361 [95% CI 0.221-0.590] for newly diagnosed treatment-eligible HIV cases [both p < 0.001]). The unit cost of an additional patient receiving ART attributable to the intervention was US83.80.TheunitcostofadeathpreventedbecauseoftheinterventionwasUS83.80. The unit cost of a death prevented because of the intervention was US234.52.ConclusionsOur results demonstrate that the simplified HIV test and treat intervention promoted successful engagement in care and was associated with a 62% reduction in mortality. Our findings support the implementation of integrated HIV testing and immediate access to ART irrespective of CD4 count, in order to optimize the impact of ART

    Robust constrained model predictive control based on parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions

    The problem of robust constrained model predictive control (MPC) of systems with polytopic uncertainties is considered in this paper. New sufficient conditions for the existence of parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions are proposed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which will reduce the conservativeness resulting from using a single Lyapunov function. At each sampling instant, the corresponding parameter-dependent Lyapunov function is an upper bound for a worst-case objective function, which can be minimized using the LMI convex optimization approach. Based on the solution of optimization at each sampling instant, the corresponding state feedback controller is designed, which can guarantee that the resulting closed-loop system is robustly asymptotically stable. In addition, the feedback controller will meet the specifications for systems with input or output constraints, for all admissible time-varying parameter uncertainties. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques

    Spatial algebraic solitons at the Dirac point in optically induced nonlinear photonic lattices

    The discovery of a new type of soliton occurring in periodic systems is reported. This type of nonlinear excitation exists at a Dirac point of a photonic band structure, and features an oscillating tail that damps algebraically. Solitons in periodic systems are localized states traditionally supported by photonic bandgaps. Here, it is found that besides photonic bandgaps, a Dirac point in the band structure of triangular optical lattices can also sustain solitons. Apart from their theoretical impact within the soliton theory, they have many potential uses because such solitons are possible in both Kerr material and photorefractive crystals that possess self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities. The findings enrich the soliton family and provide information for studies of nonlinear waves in many branches of physics

    Almost sure H∞ sliding mode control for nonlinear stochastic systems with Markovian switching and time-delays

    This paperinvestigatesthealmostsure H1 sliding mode control (SMC) problem for non linear stochastic systems with Markovian switching and time-delays. An integral sliding surface is first constructed for the addressed system. Then, by employing the topping time method combined with martingale in equalities, sufficient conditions are established to ensure the almost surely exponential stability and the H 1 performance of the system dynamics in the specified sliding surface. ASMC law is designed to guarantee the reach ability of the specified sliding surface almost surely. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to a class of special nonlinear stochastic systems with Markovian switching and time-delays, where the desired SMC law is obtained in terms of the solutions to a set of matrix in equalities. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed SMC scheme
