Learning from data: Plant breeding applications of machine learning

    Get PDF
Increasingly, new sources of data are being incorporated into plant breeding pipelines. Enormous amounts of data from field phenomics and genotyping technologies places data mining and analysis into a completely different level that is challenging from practical and theoretical standpoints. Intelligent decision-making relies on our capability of extracting from data useful information that may help us to achieve our goals more efficiently. Many plant breeders, agronomists and geneticists perform analyses without knowing relevant underlying assumptions, strengths or pitfalls of the employed methods. The study endeavors to assess statistical learning properties and plant breeding applications of supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques. A soybean nested association panel (aka. SoyNAM) was the base-population for experiments designed in situ and in silico. We used mixed models and Markov random fields to evaluate phenotypic-genotypic-environmental associations among traits and learning properties of genome-wide prediction methods. Alternative methods for analyses were proposed

Water Resources Management Public Policy Evaluation: a Propositive Model from Brazilian Legal Context

This study proposes a conceptual model applied to water resources management for assessing environmental management policies according to sustainable development principles. The main premise is that public policies have a natural cycle of design, regulation, implementation and evaluation, to achieve their institutional objectives. Institutions involved in politics are conditioned by the cultural environment, so that institutional performance is influenced by subjects and standards behaviors, physical parameters, and in turn, can orient institutional change. These elements define the criteria for efficiency assessment under a measure of sustainable development and in accordance to Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) methodology. Based on literature, documents, case study and by applying the deductive method, Brazilian National Water Resources Policy (1997) is analyzed, especially for groundwater industrial user’s rights in the lower course of Paraiba River Basin, Paraiba, Brazil, located on a semi-arid region. Through the establishment of qualitative and quantitative analysis, the generated model was calibrated at institutional and environmental levels with data from the case study. The generated metadata w ere used to compose the indicators that feed the model. This model allow s a perspective of IWRM application, providing objective results on the efficiency feasibility assessment of environmental and water management public policies

Increasing Predictive Ability by Modeling Interactions between Environments, Genotype and Canopy Coverage Image Data for Soybeans

Phenomics is a new area that offers numerous opportunities for its applicability in plant breeding. One possibility is to exploit this type of information obtained from early stages of the growing season by combining it with genomic data. This opens an avenue that can be capitalized by improving the predictive ability of the common prediction models used for genomic prediction. Imagery (canopy coverage) data recorded between days 14–71 using two collection methods (ground information in 2013 and 2014; aerial information in 2014 and 2015) on a soybean nested association mapping population (SoyNAM) was used to calibrate the prediction models together with the inclusion of several types of interactions between canopy coverage data, environments, and genomic data. Three different scenarios were considered that breeders might face testing lines in fields: (i) incomplete field trials (CV2); (ii) newly developed lines (CV1); and (iii) predicting lines in unobserved environments (CV0). Two different traits were evaluated in this study: yield and days to maturity (DTM). Results showed improvements in the predictive ability for yield with respect to those models that solely included genomic data. These relative improvements ranged 27–123%, 27–148%, and 65–165% for CV2, CV1, and CV0, respectively. No major changes were observed for DTM. Similar improvements were observed for both traits when the reduced canopy information for days 14–33 was used to build the training-testing relationships, showing a clear advantage of using phenomics in very early stages of the growing season

This work addresses the dynamics of translation, circulation, and (self)dissemination of the poetic production of Brazilian writers Angélica Freitas, Ricardo Domeneck and Érica Zíngano in the German language space, observing the conditions and strategies through printed and digital media. We focus on the role played by translators, their decisive motivations for selection, as well as the dynamics of reception and dissemination of this poetry and its translations in the publishing market, highlighting global and local aspects. These three poets reveal the complex dynamics of transits and exchanges in a contemporary network of poets, translators as well as cultural and literary agents, where the activity of translation became a relevant role in the publication of personal blogs and international sites dedicated to world poetry with the proliferation of electronic publishing platforms.

The search for results and its interface with culture, with the adaptation to the transition of customs and technological innovations generate impacts on social factors. The diversity of cultures in work occupations and their association with group culture is a gap to be observed. As a result of this trend, it was observed the need to understand the studies carried out within a chronological approach, which brought the need to perform a bibliometric analysis. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the scenario of research carried out to understand the transition of culture within the strategic decision-making processes in multinational companies and its deployment through the projects in the different layers of these organizations due to the changes brought by technological advances as in special connectivity in the last 30 years referenced in the creation of the World Wide Web. For this purpose, bibliometrics was made with the keywords “Cultur*” and Boolean intersections “AND” for “business strateg*” OR “project portfolio management” OR "multinational compan*" consolidated into two different research bases. Through tools of analysis by specific statistical software can be highlighted as the main research outputs: the search for the subject and the importance of the theme, the focus on obtaining financial return based on performance; the base concentration on research with more than 20 years of publication linked to the companies' difficulty in the interaction of Culture with the transition of generations associated with customs and new technology; the concentration of research in know-how countries linked to the top-down management approach; and the factors of interaction between the internal culture of the organization and the local cultures of the groups in the countries of operation of these companies with the association of a top-down management communication line
