    Intercultural Communication and Foreign Language Teaching

    Nowadays intercultural communication is the subject of great topical interest in foreign languages circles. The close relationship between language and culture determines the connotation of foreign language teaching. We should realize that teaching foreign language means not only imparting of language knowledge but also spreading cultural knowledge and cultivating of students’intercultural communication ability. This between language and culture,and some problems existing in foreign language teaching and discusses the necessity and importance of cultivating of students’ intercultural communication ability. Keywords: culture, language, foreign language teaching, intercultural communication Résumé La communication transculturelle est aujourd’hui un sujet chaud dans le monde des langues étrangères. La relation inséparable entre la langue et la culture décide que l’enseignement des langues étrangères ne comprend pas seulement la transmission des connaissances de la langue, mais aussi celle de la culture et la formation des capacités des étudiants dans la communication transculturelle. Cet essai traite, à travers l’analyse de la connotation de la communication transculturelle, des relations entre la langue et la culture et des problèmes existants dans l’enseignement des langes étrangères, la nécessité et la signification de former les capacités de la communication transculturelle dans l’enseignement des langues étrangères.     Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Blocking the binding of WT1 to bcl-2 promoter by G-quadruplex ligand SYUIQ-FM05

    At present, wt1, a Wilms’ tumor suppressor gene, is recognized as a critical regulator of tumorigenesis and a potential therapeutic target. WT1 shows the ability to regulate the transcription of bcl-2 by binding to a GC-rich region in the promoter, which can then fold into a special DNA secondary structure called the G-quadruplex. This function merits the exploration of the effect of a G-quadruplex ligand on the binding and subsequent regulation of WT1 on the bcl-2 promoter. In the present study, WT1 was found to bind to the double strand containing the G-quadruplex-forming sequence of the bcl-2 promoter. However, the G-quadruplex ligand SYUIQ-FM05 effectively blocked this binding by interacting with the GC-rich sequence. Our new findings are significant in the exploration of new strategies to block WT1's transcriptional regulation for cancer-cell treatment

    Clinical and bacteriological features and prognosis of ascitic fluid infection in Chinese patients with cirrhosis

    Abstract Background Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and bacterascites (BA) represent frequent and serious complications in cirrhosis patients with ascites. However, few detailed data are available regarding the clinical and bacteriological feature of SBP or BA patients in China. Methods We retrospectively analyzed bacteriological and clinical characteristics of patients with SBP and BA at Beijing 302 Hospital in China from January 2012 to December 2015. Results A total of 600 patients with SBP (n = 408) or BA (n = 192) were enrolled. Patients with BA appeared to have a less severe clinical manifestation and lower mortality rate than patients with SBP. Gram-negative bacteria formed the majority of pathogens in SBP (73.9%) and BA (55.8%) cases. Higher ascitic fluid polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) count and hepatocellular carcinoma were independent risk factors for BA episode progressing to SBP. The concentration of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was independent risk factor for 30-day mortality of BA patients. For patients with SBP, the independent risk factors for 30-day mortality were age, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, septic shock and hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients with third-generation cephalosporin or carbapenems resistant infection had a significantly lower survival probability. There were significant differences in clinical characteristics and outcome among the major bacteria. Multivariate analysis showed that patients infected with Klebsiella spp. had higher hazard ratio of 30-day mortality. Conclusion Our study reported the bacteriological and clinical characteristics of patients with SBP and BA. Higher ascitic fluid PMN count and hepatocellular carcinoma were found to be independent risk factors for BA episode progressed to SBP.     Modulating Three-Dimensional Microenvironment with Hyaluronan of Different Molecular Weights Alters Breast Cancer Cell Invasion Behavior

    Hyaluronan (HA), a polymer with various molecular weights (MW) found in tumor microenvironments, is associated with malignant progression of breast cancer. Reducing the amount of high-MW HA in the microenvironment by hyaluronidase is a promising approach for breast cancer treatment. However, whether the generation of HA fragments negatively affects breast cancer cells remains to be determined. Furthermore, HA forms three-dimensional (3D) networks by cross-linking with other extracellular molecules to function. Therefore, a model mimicking the cross-linked HA network is required to determine the effect of HA fragments on breast cancer cells. To clarify the differential roles of low (HA35) versus high (HA117) MW HA on cancer cell phenotype, a 3D culture system was set up by covalently cross-linking HA with alginate and investigating the behavior of 4T-1 and SKBR3 breast cancer cells alongside a two-dimensional (2D) control. The results show the invasion and migration abilities of 4T-1 and SKBR3 cells are significantly enhanced by the presence of HA35 but inhibited by HA117 in both 2D monolayers and 3D spheroids. The differential effects of HA35 and HA117 on cancer cell epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype were further confirmed in terms of differential regulation of E-cadherin and vimentin as important EMT markers at both the cellular and mRNA levels. Additional experiments show the CD44–Twist signaling pathway might be involved in the differential effects of HA35 and HA117. These results have important implications with respect to understanding the role of HA in breast cancer development and for the design of therapeutic approaches based on the eradication of HA with hyaluronidase
