Digital literacy: Impacts of technology on learning from Generation Y
This article reports the results of a research project whose purpose was to understand the form of acquisition of digital literacy by Generation Y. The project goal was to identify how this new generation learns and uses Digital Technologies of Information and Communication (TDIC) in and out of school. It also sought to analyze how the domain of such technologies affects such generation’s performance in school. The digital literacy is understood here as a set of skills to read, write and interact with other people, mediated by digital technology devices, whose acquisition by Generation Y occurs at home, still in infancy. A questionnaire about socio-economic and technological development was applied, and the participants (children and adolescents aged 9 to 14) were filmed when performing learning activities in the school computer lab in order to observe what were their technological skills. The resultsindicated that exposure to early technological equipment makes the acquisition of digital literacy by Generation Y as natural as learningto walk and talk and bring in positive impacts on its school learning.Key words: digital literacy, technology, learning.</p

Corn Grain Yield and Potassium Uptake and Recycling as affected by Rootworm Resistance and Potassium Fertilization
New corn hybrids increase yield and may change potassium (K) uptake or fertilization needs through improved traits that increase yield and root efficiency. Hybrids, soil conditions, and rainfall may affect the rate at which K in cornstalks is released to the soil and becomes available to plant uptake. Therefore, a study was conducted from 2006 through 2009 at the Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering Research Farm to evaluate the effects of K fertilization and rootworm resistance on grain yield, K uptake, and K recycling with residue
Measurement of resistance curves in the longitudinal failure of composites using digital image correlation
This paper presents a new methodology to measure the crack resistance curves associated with fiber-dominated failure modes in polymer–matrix composites. The crack resistance curves not only characterize the fracture toughness of the material, but are also the basis for the identification of the parameters of the softening laws used in the numerical simulation of fracture in composite materials. The proposed method is based on the identification of the crack tip location using Digital Image Correlation and the calculation of the J-integral directly from the test data using a simple expression derived for cross-ply composite laminates. It is shown that the results obtained using the proposed methodology yield crack resistance curves similar to those obtained using Finite Element based methods for compact tension carbon–epoxy specimens. However, it is also shown that, while the Digital Image Correlation based technique mitigates the problems resulting from Finite Element based data reduction schemes applied to compact compression tests, the delamination that accompanies the propagation of a kink-band renders compact compression test specimens unsuitable to measure resistance curves associated with fiber kinking
A Conceptual approach to tourism typology. A classification proposal
During these past decades, tourist supply and demand have both diversified. This is one major reason why different types of tourism have multiplied (golf tourism, birdwatching, etc.) Along with these typologies, there are others that are more difficult to conceptualise. To avoid this confusion, clear guidelines are necessary in order to classify types of tourism. The present article sets out a proposal to classify tourist typologies or modalities based on a series of previously defined basic criteria
This thesis is a linguistic study of Hypertext as a new enunciative technology from which the digital form of enunciation emerges. Its main objective is to show that Hypertext makes the digital form of enunciation possible. Based on theories like Social Interactionism, Textual Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, we describe the characteristcs which differentiate text from Hypertext on-line. We also describe how the users make digital references, the different types and functions of hyperlinks in the web and we analyze the relationship between Hypertext and the Postmodernism. ...
Bayesian networks for disease diagnosis: What are they, who has used them and how?
A Bayesian network (BN) is a probabilistic graph based on Bayes' theorem,
used to show dependencies or cause-and-effect relationships between variables.
They are widely applied in diagnostic processes since they allow the
incorporation of medical knowledge to the model while expressing uncertainty in
terms of probability. This systematic review presents the state of the art in
the applications of BNs in medicine in general and in the diagnosis and
prognosis of diseases in particular. Indexed articles from the last 40 years
were included. The studies generally used the typical measures of diagnostic
and prognostic accuracy: sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, precision, and the
area under the ROC curve. Overall, we found that disease diagnosis and
prognosis based on BNs can be successfully used to model complex medical
problems that require reasoning under conditions of uncertainty.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, Student PhD first pape
A New Long-term Study: Evaluation of Hybrid, Nitrogen, and Potassium Interactions in Continuous Corn
A long-term experiment was established in 2009 to study continuous corn responses to potassium (K), nitrogen (N), and hybrid rootworm resistance. Previous research suggested a need for this type of study in Southeast Iowa. A long-term trial conducted until 2001 at the Northern Research Farm in a soil testing low in P and K showed that N, P, and K fertilizers greatly increased corn yield but there was an interaction only between N and K. The maximum corn yield level, the relative yield response to N (percent increase for each N addition), and the N rate that maximized yields were highest when K was optimal or higher. In contrast, the relative yield response to N and the N rate that maximized yield were similar for soil-test P levels ranging from very low to very high. Ongoing studies at this research farm and four other farms show that rootworm resistance often increases yield compared with untreated susceptible hybrids. It does not affect the yield response to K consistently, but increases K removal because of the higher yields. Therefore, this new long-term study evaluates possible interactions between corn rootworm resistance, N fertilization, and K fertilization
