Experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2
Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of matter [1-12] hosting the condensed
matter physics counterpart of relativisticWeyl fermion [13] originally
introduced in high energy physics. The Weyl semimetal realized in the TaAs
class features multiple Fermi arcs arising from topological surface states [10,
11, 14-16] and exhibits novel quantum phenomena, e.g., chiral anomaly induced
negative mag-netoresistance [17-19] and possibly emergent supersymmetry [20].
Recently it was proposed theoretically that a new type (type-II) of Weyl
fermion [21], which does not have counterpart in high energy physics due to the
breaking of Lorentz invariance, can emerge as topologically-protected touching
between electron and hole pockets. Here, we report direct spectroscopic
evidence of topological Fermi arcs in the predicted type-II Weyl semimetal
MoTe2 [22-24]. The topological surface states are confirmed by directly
observing the surface states using bulk-and surface-sensitive angle-resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and the quasi-particle interference (QPI)
pattern between the two putative Fermi arcs in scanning tunneling microscopy
(STM). Our work establishes MoTe2 as the first experimental realization of
type-II Weyl semimetal, and opens up new opportunities for probing novel
phenomena such as exotic magneto-transport [21] in type-II Weyl semimetals.Comment: submitted on 01/29/2016. Nature Physics, in press. Spectroscopic

Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width

Semimetallic carbon allotrope with topological nodal line in mixed - bonding networks
Graphene is known as a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, in which electron
states are described by the Dirac equation of relativistic quantum mechanics.
Three-dimensional analogues of graphene are characterized by Dirac points or
lines in momentum space, which are protected by symmetry. Here, we report a
novel 3D carbon allotrope belonging to a class of topological nodal line
semimetals, discovered by using an evolutionary structure search method. The
new carbon phase in monoclinic 2 space group, termed -, consists
of five-membered rings with bonding interconnected by -bonded
carbon networks. Enthalpy calculations reveal that - is more favorable
over recently reported topological semimetallic carbon allotropes, and the
dynamical stability of - is verified by phonon spectra and molecular
dynamics simulations. Simulated x-ray diffraction spectra propose that
- would be one of the unidentified carbon phases observed in detonation
shoot. The analysis of electronic properties indicates that - exhibits
the nodal line protected by both inversion and time-reversal symmetries in the
absence of spin-orbit coupling and the surface band connecting the projected
nodal points. Our results may help design new carbon allotropes with exotic

Thalamic Activation Modulates the Responses of Neurons in Rat Primary Auditory Cortex: An In Vivo Intracellular Recording Study
Auditory cortical plasticity can be induced through various approaches. The medial geniculate body (MGB) of the auditory thalamus gates the ascending auditory inputs to the cortex. The thalamocortical system has been proposed to play a critical role in the responses of the auditory cortex (AC). In the present study, we investigated the cellular mechanism of the cortical activity, adopting an in vivo intracellular recording technique, recording from the primary auditory cortex (AI) while presenting an acoustic stimulus to the rat and electrically stimulating its MGB. We found that low-frequency stimuli enhanced the amplitudes of sound-evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in AI neurons, whereas high-frequency stimuli depressed these auditory responses. The degree of this modulation depended on the intensities of the train stimuli as well as the intervals between the electrical stimulations and their paired sound stimulations. These findings may have implications regarding the basic mechanisms of MGB activation of auditory cortical plasticity and cortical signal processing
The influence of macrophytes on sediment resuspension and the effect of associated nutrients in a shallow and large lake (Lake Taihu, China)
A yearlong campaign to examine sediment resuspension was conducted in large, shallow and eutrophic Lake Taihu, China, to investigate the influence of vegetation on sediment resuspension and its nutrient effects. The study was conducted at 6 sites located in both phytoplankton-dominated zone and macrophyte-dominated zone of the lake, lasting for a total of 13 months, with collections made at two-week intervals. Sediment resuspension in Taihu, with a two-week high average rate of 1771 g.m(-2).d(-1) and a yearly average rate of 377 g.m(-2).d(-1), is much stronger than in many other lakes worldwide, as Taihu is quite shallow and contains a long fetch. The occurrence of macrophytes, however, provided quite strong abatement of sediment resuspension, which may reduce the sediment resuspension rate up to 29-fold. The contribution of nitrogen and phosphorus to the water column from sediment resuspension was estimated as 0.34 mg.L-1 and 0.051 mg.L-1 in the phytoplankton-dominated zone. Sediment resuspension also largely reduced transparency and then stimulated phytoplankton growth. Therefore, sediment resuspension may be one of the most important factors delaying the recovery of eutrophic Lake Taihu, and the influence of sediment resuspension on water quality must also be taken into account by the lake managers when they determine the restoration target.Peer reviewe
Improved gradient descent algorithms for time-delay rational state-space systems: Intelligent search method and momentum method
This study proposes two improved gradient descent parameter estimation algorithms for rational state-space models with time-delay. These two algorithms, based on intelligent search method and momentum method, can simultaneously estimate the time-delay and parameters without the matrix eigenvalue calculation in each iteration. Compared with the traditional gradient descent algorithm, the improved algorithms come with two advantages: having quicker convergence rates and less computational efforts, particularly meaningful for those large scale systems. A simulated example is selected to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms
Nicotine Dependence among Rural-Urban Migrants in China
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The complex mechanism of nicotine dependency makes it challenging to evaluate dependence or progress towards dependence. The aim of this study was to estimate nicotine dependence levels and identify determinants of dependence among Chinese rural-urban migrants.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Multi-stage systematic sampling was used to select 4,198 rural-urban migrants aged 18 years or older from three metropolises in China. A structured questionnaire was administered during face-to-face interviews. Nicotine dependence among participants was assessed by means of the six-item Mandarin Chinese Version of the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (CFTND). Determinants of dependence were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among 4,198 participants, estimated current, daily, and occasional smoking rates were 28.3%, 21.2%, and 7.1%, respectively. The CTFND score for the 894 daily smokers was 3.39(SD: 2.32). MANOVA showed that work type, age at first migration, length of migration, and number of cities ever lived were associated with nicotine dependence.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A migratory lifestyle is associated with nicotine dependence. Results could inform the design of tobacco control programs that target Chinese rural-urban migrant workers as a special at-risk population.</p
Large-scale and rapid synthesis of disk-shaped and nano-sized graphene
We synthesized disk-shaped and nano-sized graphene (DSNG) though a novel ion-exchange methodology. This new methodology is achieved by constructing metal ion/ion-exchange resin framework. The morphology and size of the graphene can be modulated by changing the mass ratio of the carbon-containing resin to the cobalt-containing precursor. This is the first time to show that the DSNG formed on the granular transition metal substrate. The DSNG gives a high intensity of photoluminescence at near-UV wavelength of 311 nm which may provide a new type of fluorescence for applications in laser devices, ultraviolet detector UV-shielding agent and energy technology. The emission intensity of the DSNG is thirty times higher than that of the commercial large graphene. Our approach for graphene growth is conveniently controllable, easy to scale-up and the DSNG shows superior luminescent properties as compared to conventional large graphene
