Progress of the journal «Revista Española de Documentación Científica» through its references

To get accurate estimates of the academic quality of the journals it is necessary a clear approach on the basis of a well recognized method. The dimensionality of the data from the Spanish journal «Revista Española de Documentación Científica» has been made using its bibliographic references printed at the end of the research articles. The information space defines an internal communication model able to experiment with the history of the journal. The second step of this approach would be to design the representation of the space occupied by the research articles of the journal inside different international databases. The study has tried to create a grid of points of absence/presence that give an idea of how the density of the contents are close to each database. Finally, according to the frequency of coauthorship, an estimate reflecting the existence of invisible colleges has been produced

Thesaurus digital: Recursos metadata para biología marina

To keep abreast of the Spanish thesaurus regarding the bibliographic databases publicly available within the Web, a benchmarking search has been conducted. The four universities with Ms.D. studies on marine sciences, the spanish council for scientific research (CSIC), the spanish institute for the oceanography (IEO), and the spanish network for the R&D (Network IRIS) have been focused on. The assessment is performed with the vision that there is no fixed, universal technology transfer process common to all institutions. Financial metrics have been discarded as particular disadvantaged for interdisciplinary research fields. Instead of this, a helpful reference point have resulted from the thematic groups oriented framing production of externalities. The study indicates the advantages of being able to mount the results of the metadata work on the internet. It presents the thesaurus of Icman (Marine Sciences Institute of Andalusia), as a digital publication available to make sense of the web-based contents on the intranet of the library

How to Evaluate University Performance

The capacity of Library Science to produce knowledge in such an information system as the decision-taking process in scientific policy, is highlighted by the assessment of University teachers' research activity, as recently performed in Spain. The social environment of written communication has been stated, noticing the controversy on scholarly productivity concentration and some key concerns in the analysis of citations as quality indicators. Different meanings of the term "quality" are studied and analysis of the relationships within bibliometric indicators and between bibliometric and non-bibliometric data has been undertaken. From the investigation of an important information source in research areas, it is advanced the adequacy of dialogue in complex situations where problem solving oriented librarianship work shows defined features of a post-hoc rationalization of events

El uso del software HistCite para identificar artículos significativos en búsquedas por materias en la Web of Science

HistCiteTM is a large-scale computer tool for mapping science. Its power of visualization combines the production of historiographs on the basis of the analysis of co-citations of documents, with the use of bibliometrics specific indicators. The objective of this article is, to present the advantages of the new bibliometrics configuration of HistCiteTM (2004) when identifying articles to analyze the histograms that produces HistCiteTM, in terms of cumulative advantage and aging of the citations to do a comparative study of the results of HistCiteTM, in its indicators of amplitude and recognition.
