    Theory of photoinduced charge transfer in weakly coupled donor-acceptor conjugated polymers: application to an MEH-PPV:CN-PPV pair

    In a pair of coupled donor-acceptor conjugated polymer chains, it is possible for an exciton photoexcited on either polymer to decay into a hole in the donor polymer's valence band and an electron in the conduction band of the acceptor polymer. We calculate the corresponding exciton decay rate and its dependence on inter-polymer distance. For a pair of derivatives of poly(phenylene vinylene), PPV, specifically poly[2-methoxy, 5-(2^\prime-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1, 4 PPV], MEH-PPV, and poly(2,5-hexyloxy pp-phenylene cyanovinylene), CN-PPV, at a separation of 6 \AA the characteristic decay time is 2.2 ps, whereas at 4 \AA it is 50\sim 50 fs.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 4 PS files, to be published in a special issue of Chem.     Ultraviolet and soft X--ray photon--photon elastic scattering in an electron gas

    We have considered the processes which lead to elastic scattering between two far ultraviolet or X--ray photons while they propagate inside a solid, modeled as a simple electron gas. The new ingredient, with respect to the standard theory of photon--photon scattering in vacuum, is the presence of low--energy, nonrelativistic electron--hole excitations. Owing to the existence of two--photon vertices, the scattering processes in the metal are predominantly of second order, as opposed to fourth order for the vacuum case. The main processes in second order are dominated by exchange of virtual plasmons between the two photons. For two photons of similar energy Ω\hbar \Omega, this gives rise to a cross section rising like Ω2\Omega^2 up to maximum of around 103210^{-32}~cm2^2, and then decreasing like Ω6\Omega^{-6}. The maximal cross section is found for the photon wavevector kkFk \sim k_{F}, the Fermi surface size, which typically means a photon energy Ω\hbar \Omega in the keV range. Possible experiments aimed at checking the existence of these rare but seemingly measurable elastic photon--photon scattering processes are discussed, using in particular intense synchrotron sources.Comment: 33 pages, TeX, Version 3.1, S.I.S.S.A. preprint 35/93/C

    Intra-annual sediment dynamic assessment in the Wei River Basin, China, using the AIC functional-structural connectivity index

    Hydrological and sediment dynamics have changed considerably on the Chinese Loess Plateau during the last six decades due to large scale land use changes and numerous water regulation actions. Understanding the mechanism of sediment transport change and its effects is of great importance to food and environmental security. Numerical approaches are useful to map and assess spatio-temporal patterns in sediment dynamics. This study evaluates monthly and annual sediment connectivity in the Wei River Basin (134,800 km2) at the basin and sub-basin scales using the aggregated index of sediment connectivity (AIC). For the first time, this index is applied on this relatively large regional scale. The two objectives were to (1) evaluate the performance of the AIC at the regional scale, addressing substantial differences among areas, and (2) analyze how each AIC sub-factor co-determines the monthly sediment and connectivity patterns. Results show that AIC has strong or moderate positive correlation with sediment yield from 15 out of 23 stations in the Wei and Jing sub-basin. The Jing sub-basin has the highest sediment connectivity due to degraded vegetation, while the Beiluo sub-basin has the lowest sediment connectivity on average due to better ecological restoration. Within the year, sediment connectivity is highest in April and lowest in January, due to the rainfall regime and intra-annual land cover variations. Among the AIC factors, the rainfall factor has the highest effect on sediment connectivity, implying that functional connectivity (graded by rainfall and soil cover) determines sediment dynamics more than structural connectivity (mainly determined by topography and soil permeability). This study provides one of the first large-scale estimates of spatial and temporal sediment connectivity from hillslopes to river stream and including large reservoirs, which can be further employed to implement regional ecological construction works and environmental catchment management.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Extensions and degenerations of spectral triples

    For a unital C*-algebra A, which is equipped with a spectral triple and an extension T of A by the compacts, we construct a family of spectral triples associated to T and depending on the two positive parameters (s,t). Using Rieffel's notation of quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance between compact quantum metric spaces it is possible to define a metric on this family of spectral triples, and we show that the distance between a pair of spectral triples varies continuously with respect to the parameters. It turns out that a spectral triple associated to the unitarization of the algebra of compact operators is obtained under the limit - in this metric - for (s,1) -> (0, 1), while the basic spectral triple, associated to A, is obtained from this family under a sort of a dual limiting process for (1, t) -> (1, 0). We show that our constructions will provide families of spectral triples for the unitarized compacts and for the Podles sphere. In the case of the compacts we investigate to which extent our proposed spectral triple satisfies Connes' 7 axioms for noncommutative geometry.Comment: 40 pages.     Effect of microstructures on the electron-phonon interaction in the disordered metals Pd60_{60}Ag40_{40}

    Using the weak-localization method, we have measured the electron-phonon scattering times τep\tau_{ep} in Pd60_{60}Ag40_{40} thick films prepared by DC- and RF-sputtering deposition techniques. In both series of samples, we find an anomalous 1/τepT21/\tau_{ep} \propto T^2\ell temperature and disorder dependence, where \ell is the electron elastic mean free path. This anomalous behavior cannot be explained in terms of the current concepts for the electron-phonon interaction in impure conductors. Our result also reveals that the strength of the electron-phonon coupling is much stronger in the DC than RF sputtered films, suggesting that the electron-phonon interaction not only is sensitive to the total level of disorder but also is sensitive to the microscopic quality of the disorder.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys.     Point singularities and suprathreshold stochastic resonance in optimal coding

    Motivated by recent studies of population coding in theoretical neuroscience, we examine the optimality of a recently described form of stochastic resonance known as suprathreshold stochastic resonance, which occurs in populations of noisy threshold devices such as models of sensory neurons. Using the mutual information measure, it is shown numerically that for a random input signal, the optimal threshold distribution contains singularities. For large enough noise, this distribution consists of a single point and hence the optimal encoding is realized by the suprathreshold stochastic resonance effect. Furthermore, it is shown that a bifurcational pattern appears in the optimal threshold settings as the noise intensity increases.     Deep hashing with self-supervised asymmetric semantic excavation and margin-scalable constraint

    Due to its effectivity and efficiency, deep hashing approaches are widely used for large-scale visual search. However, it is still challenging to produce compact and discriminative hash codes for images asso-ciated with multiple semantics for two main reasons, 1) similarity constraints designed in most of the existing methods are based upon an oversimplified similarity assignment (i.e., 0 for instance pairs sharing no label, 1 for instance pairs sharing at least 1 label), 2) the exploration in multi-semantic relevance are insufficient or even neglected in many of the existing methods. These problems significantly limit the dis-crimination of generated hash codes. In this paper, we propose a novel Deep Hashing with Self-Supervised Asymmetric Semantic Excavation and Margin-Scalable Constraint(SADH) approach to cope with these problems. SADH implements a self-supervised network to sufficiently preserve semantic information in a semantic feature dictionary and a semantic code dictionary for the semantics of the given dataset, which efficiently and precisely guides a feature learning network to preserve multi-label semantic information using an asymmetric learning strategy. By further exploiting semantic dictionaries, a new margin-scalable constraint is employed for both precise similarity searching and robust hash code generation. Extensive empirical research on four popular benchmarks validates the proposed method and shows it outperforms several state-of-the-art approaches.     Multi-label modality enhanced attention based self-supervised deep cross-modal hashing

    The recent deep cross-modal hashing (DCMH) has achieved superior performance in effective and efficient cross-modal retrieval and thus has drawn increasing attention. Nevertheless, there are still two limitations for most existing DCMH methods: (1) single labels are usually leveraged to measure the semantic similarity of cross-modal pairwise instances while neglecting that many cross-modal datasets contain abundant semantic information among multi-labels. (2) several DCMH methods utilized the multi-labels to supervise the learning of hash functions. Nevertheless, the feature space of multilabels suffers the weakness of sparse, resulting in sub-optimization for the hash functions learning. Thus, this paper proposed a multi-label modality enhanced attention-based self-supervised deep cross-modal hashing (MMACH) framework. Specifically, a multi-label modality enhanced attention module is designed to integrate the significant features from cross-modal data into multi-labels feature representations, aiming to improve its completion. Moreover, a multi-label cross-modal triplet loss is defined based on the criterion that the feature representations of cross-modal pairwise instances with more common categories should preserve higher semantic similarity than other instances. To the best of our knowledge, the multi-label cross-modal triplet loss is the first time designed for cross-modal retrieval. Extensive experiments on four multi-label cross-modal datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed MMACH. Moreover, the MMACH also achieved superior performance and outperformed several state-of-the-art methods on the task of cross-modal retrieval.
