Sperm competition shapes gene expression and sequence evolution in the ocellated wrasse.
Gene expression differences between males and females often underlie sexually dimorphic phenotypes, and the expression levels of genes that are differentially expressed between the sexes are thought to respond to sexual selection. Most studies on the transcriptomic response to sexual selection treat sexual selection as a single force, but postmating sexual selection in particular is expected to specifically target gonadal tissue. The three male morphs of the ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) make it possible to test the role of postmating sexual selection in shaping the gonadal transcriptome. Nesting males hold territories and have the highest reproductive success, yet we detected feminization of their gonadal gene expression compared to satellite males. Satellite males are less brightly coloured and experience more intense sperm competition than nesting males. In line with postmating sexual selection affecting gonadal gene expression, we detected a more masculinized expression profile in satellites. Sneakers are the lowest quality males and showed both de-masculinization and de-feminization of gene expression. We also detected higher rates of gene sequence evolution of male-biased genes compared to unbiased genes, which could at least in part be explained by positive selection. Together, these results reveal the potential for postmating sexual selection to drive higher rates of gene sequence evolution and shape the gonadal transcriptome profile
Structure evolution of soft magnetic (Fe36Co36B19.2Si4.8Nb4)100âxCux (x=0 and 0.5) bulk glassy alloys
AbstractFully amorphous rods with diameters up to 2mm diameter were obtained upon 0.5at.% Cu addition to the Fe36Co36B19.2Si4.8Nb4 bulk metallic glass. The Cu-added glass shows a very good thermal stability but, in comparison with the Cu-free base alloy, the entire crystallization behavior is drastically changed. Upon heating, the glassy (Fe36Co36B19.2Si4.8Nb4)99.5Cu0.5 samples show two glass transitions-like events, separated by an interval of more than 100K, in between which a bcc-(Fe,Co) solid solution is formed. The soft magnetic properties are preserved upon Cu-addition and the samples show a saturation magnetization of 1.1T combined with less than 2A/m coercivity. The relaxation behavior prior to crystallization, as well as the crystallization behavior, were studied by time-resolved X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation. It was found that both glassy alloys behave similar at temperatures below the glass transition. The incidence of melanoma in South Africa : an exploratory analysis of national cancer registry data from 2005 to 2013 with a specific focus on melanoma in black Africans
BACKGROUND. Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer with poor survival when diagnosed late. There are important differences in clinical and
histological features of melanoma and disease outcomes in people with darker skin types.
METHODS. A retrospective review of data captured by the National Cancer Registry (NCR) of South Africa (SA) was performed for 2005 -
2013. Data on patient numbers, demography, location and biological features were analysed for all records. Closer analysis of melanoma of
the limbs reported in black Africans was done after manually collecting this information from original reports.
RESULTS. With 11 784 invasive melanomas reported to the NCR, the overall incidence of melanoma for SA was 2.7 per 100 000. Males (51%),
individuals aged â„60 years (48%) and the anatomical sites of lower limb (36%) and trunk (27%) were most commonly affected. Melanoma
incidences in the white and black populations were 23.2 and 0.5 per 100 000, respectively. Most cases were diagnosed at private pathology
laboratories (73%). Superficial spreading melanoma (47%) and nodular melanoma (20%) predominated. Among 878 black Africans
diagnosed in the public sector with melanoma of the limbs, females (68%) and individuals aged â„60 years (61%) were most commonly
affected. Lower-limb lesions (91%) and acral lentiginous melanoma (65%) predominated, with 74% of cases affecting the foot and 62% of
cases presenting with a Breslow depth >4 mm.
CONCLUSIONS. This study provides up-to-date NCR incidence and demographic data on melanoma and highlights the neglected research
gaps in relation to melanoma in black Africans to provide evidence needed to address health disparities in overlooked population groups.CYW receives funding from the South African Medical Research

Quasiparticle excitation in and around the vortex core of underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 studied by site-selective NMR
We report a site-selective ^{17}O spin-lattice relaxation rate T_1^{-1} in
the vortex state of underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8. We found that T_1^{-1} at the
planar sites exhibits an unusual nonmonotonic NMR frequency dependence. In the
region well outside the vortex core, T_1^{-1} cannot be simply explained by the
density of states of the Doppler-shifted quasiparticles in the d-wave
superconductor. Based on T_1^{-1} in the vortex core region, we establish
strong evidence that the local density of states within the vortex core is

Scalar field exact solutions for non-flat FLRW cosmology: A technique from non-linear Schr\"odinger-type formulation
We report a method of solving for canonical scalar field exact solution in a
non-flat FLRW universe with barotropic fluid using non-linear Schr\"{o}dinger
(NLS)-type formulation in comparison to the method in the standard Friedmann
framework. We consider phantom and non-phantom scalar field cases with
exponential and power-law accelerating expansion. Analysis on effective
equation of state to both cases of expansion is also performed. We speculate
and comment on some advantage and disadvantage of using the NLS formulation in

Sub-Poissonian statistics in order-to-chaos transition
We study the phenomena at the overlap of quantum chaos and nonclassical
statistics for the time-dependent model of nonlinear oscillator. It is shown in
the framework of Mandel Q-parameter and Wigner function that the statistics of
oscillatory excitation number is drastically changed in order-to chaos
transition. The essential improvement of sub-Poissonian statistics in
comparison with an analogous one for the standard model of driven anharmonic
oscillator is observed for the regular operational regime. It is shown that in
the chaotic regime the system exhibits the range of sub- and super-Poissonian
statistics which alternate one to other depending on time intervals. Unusual
dependence of the variance of oscillatory number on the external noise level

Chaos in a double driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator
We propose an anharmonic oscillator driven by two periodic forces of
different frequencies as a new time-dependent model for investigating quantum
dissipative chaos. Our analysis is done in the frame of statistical ensemble of
quantum trajectories in quantum state diffusion approach. Quantum dynamical
manifestation of chaotic behavior, including the emergence of chaos, properties
of strange attractors, and quantum entanglement are studied by numerical

Soil biochemistry and microbial activity in vineyards under conventional and organic management at Northeast Brazil.
The SĂŁo Francisco Submedium Valley is located at the Brazilian semiarid region and is an important center for irrigated fruit growing. This region is responsible for 97% of the national exportation of table grapes, including seedless grapes. Based on the fact that organic fertilization can improve soil quality, we compared the effects of conventional and organic soil management on microbial activity and mycorrhization of seedless grape crops. We measured glomerospores number, most probable number (MPN) of propagules, richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species, AMF root colonization, EE-BRSP production, carbon microbial biomass (C-MB), microbial respiration, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity (FDA) and metabolic coefficient (qCO2). The organic management led to an increase in all variables with the exception of EE-BRSP and qCO2. Mycorrhizal colonization increased from 4.7% in conventional crops to 15.9% in organic crops. Spore number ranged from 4.1 to 12.4 per 50 g-1 soil in both management systems. The most probable number of AMF propagules increased from 79 cm-3 soil in the conventional system to 110 cm-3 soil in the organic system. Microbial carbon, CO2 emission, and FDA activity were increased by 100 to 200% in the organic crop. Thirteen species of AMF were identified, the majority in the organic cultivation system. Acaulospora excavata, Entrophospora infrequens, Glomus sp.3 and Scutellospora sp. were found only in the organically managed crop. S. gregaria was found only in the conventional crop. Organically managed vineyards increased mycorrhization and general soil microbial activity
Observation of exclusive DVCS in polarized electron beam asymmetry measurements
We report the first results of the beam spin asymmetry measured in the
reaction e + p -> e + p + gamma at a beam energy of 4.25 GeV. A large asymmetry
with a sin(phi) modulation is observed, as predicted for the interference term
of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and the Bethe-Heitler process. The
amplitude of this modulation is alpha = 0.202 +/- 0.028. In leading-order and
leading-twist pQCD, the alpha is directly proportional to the imaginary part of
the DVCS amplitude.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Electron Scattering From High-Momentum Neutrons in Deuterium
We report results from an experiment measuring the semi-inclusive reaction
where the proton is moving at a large angle relative to the
momentum transfer. If we assume that the proton was a spectator to the reaction
taking place on the neutron in deuterium, the initial state of that neutron can
be inferred. This method, known as spectator tagging, can be used to study
electron scattering from high-momentum (off-shell) neutrons in deuterium. The
data were taken with a 5.765 GeV electron beam on a deuterium target in
Jefferson Laboratory's Hall B, using the CLAS detector. A reduced cross section
was extracted for different values of final-state missing mass ,
backward proton momentum and momentum transfer . The data
are compared to a simple PWIA spectator model. A strong enhancement in the data
observed at transverse kinematics is not reproduced by the PWIA model. This
enhancement can likely be associated with the contribution of final state
interactions (FSI) that were not incorporated into the model. A ``bound neutron
structure function'' was extracted as a function of and
the scaling variable at extreme backward kinematics, where effects of
FSI appear to be smaller. For MeV/c, where the neutron is far
off-shell, the model overestimates the value of in the region of
between 0.25 and 0.6. A modification of the bound neutron structure
