The Political Economy of the Yugoslav Revolution

    Get PDF
Industrialisation, agrarian structures, nationalism, dependency and the role of the state have all been important themes in development studies during the post-war period. The focus has, of course, been mainly on peripheral capitalist economies in Africa, Asia and Latin America, reflecting the rapid internationalisation of capital in different forms during this period. This paper, in contrast, brings these themes much closer to home by examining them in the context of the European periphery during the interwar period, in a country which was a creation of the European powers, namely, Yugoslavia

On the origin of the family

We present a game theoretic model to explain why people form life long monogamous families. Three components are essential in our framework, paternal investment, fatherhood uncertainty, and, perhaps the most distinctive feature of all, the overlap of children of different ages. When all three conditions are present, monogamy is the most efficient form of sexual organization in the sense that it yields greater survivorship than serial monogamy, group marriage, and polygyny. Monogamy is also the only configuration that fosters altruistic ties among siblings. Finally, our result sheds light to the understanding of why most religions center around the monogamous fidelity family

Primary teachers' views about trying to support children’s learning without using ‘ability’ grouping

A seminar by Dr Phil Wright, Lecturer in Primary PGCE Teacher Education and University of Cumbria Partnership Tutor. In this session we will be thinking about how children are typically organised in ‘ability’ groups in primary classrooms and the potential for an alternative approach. We will think about the reasons why this practice is so prevalent and some of the effects it has on children (and adults). I will then share some work I did with 15 primary teachers who wanted to explore an alternative way of supporting children to learn. We will look at how they adjusted their practice and their thinking, and how they realised that the positive change they experienced “starts with me!”

Tumour to Tumour Metastasis of Malignant Melanoma to Intracranial Tumour

Tumours can metastasize to sites of other tumours but this is a rare event. The phenomenon has been well described in primary tumours of the lung and breast. This has been described in melanomas but as very rare occurrence. We describe a case of a malignant melanoma that metastasized to a pre-existing meningioma. We have tried to highlight this phenomenon in patient with melanoma and need for close vigilance of other pre-existing tumours to identify early metastasis

La teoría del desarrollo desigual de Óscar Braun. Un análisis critico

    Get PDF

Effect of “finite pool of worry” and COVID-19 on UK climate change perceptions

This is the final version. Available on open access from the National Academy of Sciences via the DOI in this record. Research reveals that a "finite pool of worry" constrains concern about and action on climate change. Nevertheless, a longitudinal panel survey of 1,858 UK residents, surveyed in April 2019 and June 2020, reveals little evidence for diminishing climate change concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, the sample identifies climate change as a bigger threat than COVID-19. The findings suggest climate change has become an intransigent concern within UK public consciousness.Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC
