Validation of Goals for Pre-Departure Missionary Orientation

Problem Cross-cultural orientation programs facilitate missionary preparedness. Orientation is more effective if driven by valid and suitable goals determined before methods are selected and programs implemented. This study attempted to identify valid goals for pre-departure programs and develop a framework for selecting them. Method The goals of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Institute for World Mission (IWM) were selected for validation. IWM is a 4-6 week pre-departure orientation program that started in 1966 and had effectively prepared 2,500+ cross-cultural missionaries by 1993. Their goals are broad areas suitable for establishing sub-goals and objectives. The validation process comprised four phases: identification and clarification of goals, collection of data from six validation sources, synthesis/analysis of data for cross-validation, and a reconceptualization of findings into a framework to guide determination/evaluation of suitable goals. A combination of documentary, statistical, and analytical techniques was used to treat the data from six sources: three case study populations (staff/attendees, leaders, and current/returned missionaries); and three external sources (missionary preparation literature and practice, cross-cultural literature, trends/issues). Results All IWM’s goals were validated directly or indirectly by the six sources. Goals were considered appropriate (important, essential, and relevant) by 96% or more of the enthusiastic case populations. No essential goals are missing, although women’s/children’s preparation and leaming-to-leam skills need greater emphasis. Conclusions Orientation contributed to cross-cultural personnel preparation in 12 critical goal areas: cross-cultural awareness and skills/competencies, a sense of call/commitment, spiritual formation/growth, essential emotional/attitudinal growth, cultural understanding from area studies and mission issues, knowledge and practices important for new roles and psychological/physical health, familiarity with the sending organization information about philosophy/practices/policies, a paradigm shift for continuing growth through the transformation of the mind/worldview, and fellowship which is a critical program goal for achieving an orientation purpose. Several other conclusions related to effective future preparation. Although IWM is more effective than might be expected because of valid goals, focus on participant readiness, and orientation purpose, it could improve if goal implementation were expanded to before and after the orientation program

Successful practical work in challenging circumstances: Lessons to be learned from Uganda

This article is written in support of the argument that to encourage practical work in chemistry in schools where previously little had taken place, teachers should be taught basic workshop skills that they can use to safely improvise equipment suitable for use in their own school environment. These skills include cutting and bending glass tubing, inserting tubing through bungs and soldering electrical components. With these skills, teachers can make equipment to prepare gases, make spirit burners, and complete electrical connections. By empowering the teachers with these skills, they can train enthusiastic students to assist as technicians and with the teachers, visit other schools to pass on these skills. This process will compliment any government initiatives in this field of professional development. Prior to our visit to Uganda we anticipated that there could be issues with equipment and laboratory services but were surprised by the poor quality of the chemicals we found in the schools. This would make teaching practical chemistry a challenge even with the right equipment.[AJCE, 3(1), January 2013

Excavations at the Viking Barrow Cemetery at Heath Wood, Ingleby, Derbyshire

The cemetery at Heath Wood, Ingleby, Derbyshire, is the only known Scandinavian cremation cemetery in the British Isles. It comprises fifty-nine barrows, of which about one-third have been excavated on previous occasions, although earlier excavators concluded that some were empty cenotaph mounds. From 1998 to 2000 three barrows were examined. Our investigations have suggested that each of the barrows contained a burial, although not all contain evidence of a pyre. A full report of the 1998-2000 excavations is provided, alongside a summary of the earlier finds. The relationship of Heath Wood to the neighbouring site at Repton is examined, in order to understand its significance for the Scandinavian settlement of the Danelaw. It is concluded that Heath Wood may have been a war cemetery of the Viking Great Army of AD 873-8

Constructive role of dissipation for driven coupled bosonic modes

We describe four cases of childhood B-cell progenitor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (BCP-ALL) and one of T-cell (T-ALL) with unexpected numbers of interphase signals for ETV6 with an ETV6-RUNX1 fusion probe. Three fusion negative cases each had a telomeric part of 12p terminating within intron 2 of ETV6, attached to sequences from 5q, 7p and 7q, respectively. Two fusion positive cases, with partial insertions of ETV6 into chromosome 21, also had a breakpoint in intron 2. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation ( FISH), array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) and Molecular Copy-Number Counting (MCC) results were concordant for the T-cell case. Sequences downstream of TLX3 on chromosome 5 were deleted, leaving the intact gene closely apposed to the first two exons of ETV6 and its upstream promoter. qRT-PCR showed a significant upregulation of TLX3. In this study we provide the first incontrovertible evidence that the upstream promoter of ETV6 attached to the first two exons of the gene was responsible for the ectopic expression of a proto-oncogene that became abnormally close as the result of deletion and translocation. We have also shown breakpoints in intron 2 of ETV6 in two cases of insertion with ETV6-RUNX1 fusion
