The Incidence and Cost of New Onset Hyperlipidemia Claims Among US Wait-Listed and Transplanted Renal Allograft Recipients
Background: Hyperlipidemia increases mortality and is common with kidney-disease. New-onset
hyperlipidemia (NOHL) among patients wait-listed and after transplantation may impact costs and graft-survival of
patients with kidney disease. Methods: Using the United States Renal Data System, we compared the costs to Medicare
associated with or without NOHL in wait-listed patients in the second and first year pre-transplant and transplanted
patients in the first and second year post-transplant. We also examined the impact on graft-survival of NOHL. Results:
New onset hyperlipidemia was especially expensive when it occurred well before transplantation. When compared with
individuals with no hyperlipidemia, patients with early onset hyperlipidemia cost an extra 14,673 in the two years following transplantation. As has been found in prior studies,
patients without any NOHL had the worst graft survival rates. Conclusions: Although NOHL was associated with
increased pre- and post-transplant costs, patients diagnosed with NOHL between the second year before and second year
after transplantation experienced higher graft-survival rates than those without NOHL by 2-years post-transplantation.
Prior studies attribute this relationship to inflammation and malnutrition, which result in lower cholesterol levels and
worse outcomes
An Efficient Implementation of Flux Formulae in Multidimensional Relativistic Hydrodynamical Codes
We derive and analyze a simplified formulation of the numerical viscosity
terms appearing in the expression of the numerical fluxes associated to several
High-Resolution Shock-Capturing schemes. After some algebraic pre-processing,
we give explicit expressions for the numerical viscosity terms of two of the
most widely used flux formulae, which implementation saves computational time
in multidimensional simulations of relativistic flows. Additionally, such
treatment explicitely cancells and factorizes a number of terms helping to
amortiguate the growing of round-off errors. We have checked the performance of
our formulation running a 3D relativistic hydrodynamical code to solve a
standard test-bed problem and found that the improvement in efficiency is of
high practical interest in numerical simulations of relativistic flows in

Theory of periodic swarming of bacteria: application to Proteus mirabilis
The periodic swarming of bacteria is one of the simplest examples for pattern
formation produced by the self-organized collective behavior of a large number
of organisms. In the spectacular colonies of Proteus mirabilis (the most common
species exhibiting this type of growth) a series of concentric rings are
developed as the bacteria multiply and swarm following a scenario periodically
repeating itself. We have developed a theoretical description for this process
in order to get a deeper insight into some of the typical processes governing
the phenomena in systems of many interacting living units. All of our
theoretical results are in excellent quantitative agreement with the complete

Particulate air pollutants, APOE alleles and their contributions to cognitive impairment in older women and to amyloidogenesis in experimental models
Exposure to particulate matter (PM) in the ambient air and its interactions with APOE alleles may contribute to the acceleration of brain aging and the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Neurodegenerative effects of particulate air pollutants were examined in a US-wide cohort of older women from the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) and in experimental mouse models. Residing in places with fine PM exceeding EPA standards increased the risks for global cognitive decline and all-cause dementia respectively by 81 and 92%, with stronger adverse effects in APOE ɛ4/4 carriers. Female EFAD transgenic mice (5xFAD+/−/human APOE ɛ3 or ɛ4+/+) with 225 h exposure to urban nanosized PM (nPM) over 15 weeks showed increased cerebral β-amyloid by thioflavin S for fibrillary amyloid and by immunocytochemistry for Aβ deposits, both exacerbated by APOE ɛ4. Moreover, nPM exposure increased Aβ oligomers, caused selective atrophy of hippocampal CA1 neurites, and decreased the glutamate GluR1 subunit. Wildtype C57BL/6 female mice also showed nPM-induced CA1 atrophy and GluR1 decrease. In vitro nPM exposure of neuroblastoma cells (N2a-APP/swe) increased the pro-amyloidogenic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). We suggest that airborne PM exposure promotes pathological brain aging in older women, with potentially a greater impact in ɛ4 carriers. The underlying mechanisms may involve increased cerebral Aβ production and selective changes in hippocampal CA1 neurons and glutamate receptor subunits
Hole-doping dependence of percolative phase separation in Pr_(0.5-delta)Ca_(0.2+delta)Sr_(0.3)MnO_(3) around half doping
We address the problem of the percolative phase separation in polycrystalline
samples of PrCaSrMnO for (hole doping between 0.46 and 0.54). We perform
measurements of X-ray diffraction, dc magnetization, ESR, and electrical
resistivity. These samples show at a paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic
(FM) transition, however, we found that for there is a coexistence of
both of these phases below . On lowering below the charge-ordering
(CO) temperature all the samples exhibit a coexistence between the FM
metallic and CO (antiferromagnetic) phases. In the whole range the FM phase
fraction () decreases with increasing . Furthermore, we show that only
for the metallic fraction is above the critical percolation
threshold . As a consequence, these samples show very
different magnetoresistance properties. In addition, for we
observe a percolative metal-insulator transition at , and for
the insulating-like behavior generated by the enlargement of
with increasing is well described by the percolation law , where is a critical exponent. On the basis of
the values obtained for this exponent we discuss different possible percolation
mechanisms, and suggest that a more deep understanding of geometric and
dimensionality effects is needed in phase separated manganites. We present a
complete vs phase diagram showing the magnetic and electric properties

Lubricating Bacteria Model for Branching growth of Bacterial Colonies
Various bacterial strains (e.g. strains belonging to the genera Bacillus,
Paenibacillus, Serratia and Salmonella) exhibit colonial branching patterns
during growth on poor semi-solid substrates. These patterns reflect the
bacterial cooperative self-organization. Central part of the cooperation is the
collective formation of lubricant on top of the agar which enables the bacteria
to swim. Hence it provides the colony means to advance towards the food. One
method of modeling the colonial development is via coupled reaction-diffusion
equations which describe the time evolution of the bacterial density and the
concentrations of the relevant chemical fields. This idea has been pursued by a
number of groups. Here we present an additional model which specifically
includes an evolution equation for the lubricant excreted by the bacteria. We
show that when the diffusion of the fluid is governed by nonlinear diffusion
coefficient branching patterns evolves. We study the effect of the rates of
emission and decomposition of the lubricant fluid on the observed patterns. The
results are compared with experimental observations. We also include fields of
chemotactic agents and food chemotaxis and conclude that these features are

A study on the response of single and double circular plates subjected to localised blast loading
The response of single and double layered steel plates to localised air-blast loading was examined. Two configurations, both comprising fully clamped circular plates with a 200 mm exposed diameter, were considered: 4mm thick single and (2+2) mm double layered plates. The localised air-blast loading was applied by centrally detonating discs of PE4 plastic explosive. Similar failure modes were evident in the single and double plate configurations, namely, Mode I (large inelastic deformation) and Mode II (capping failure along with deformation) responses. The double plates exhibited larger midpoint deflections than the single plates, and partial tearing of the front plate in the double plates was observed at a lower impulse than in the single plates. However, complete capping of both plates in the double plate configuration occurred at the same charge mass as for the single plates, implying that both configurations offer equivalent protection from capping failure as a result of this type of localised blast loading. A metallographic study of the deformed and torn plate regions did not reveal any phase transformation in the steel. It was also found that the 2 mm thick plates exhibited larger increases in grain size than the 4 mm thick plates
Single-cell analysis shows that adipose tissue of persons with both HIV and diabetes is enriched for clonal, cytotoxic, and CMV-specific CD4+ T cells
Persons with HIV are at increased risk for diabetes mellitus compared with individuals without HIV. Adipose tissue is an important regulator of glucose and lipid metabolism, and adipose tissue T cells modulate local inflammatory responses and, by extension, adipocyte function. Persons with HIV and diabetes have a high proportion of CX3CR1+ GPR56+ CD57+ (C-G-C+) CD4+ T cells in adipose tissue, a subset of which are cytomegalovirus specific, whereas individuals with diabetes but without HIV have predominantly CD69+ CD4+ T cells. Adipose tissue CD69+ and C-G-C+ CD4+ T cell subsets demonstrate higher receptor clonality compared with the same cells in blood, potentially reflecting antigen-driven expansion, but C-G-C+ CD4+ T cells have a more inflammatory and cytotoxic RNA transcriptome. Future studies will explore whether viral antigens have a role in recruitment and proliferation of pro-inflammatory C-G-C+ CD4+ T cells in adipose tissue of persons with HIV
Perturbed angular correlation study of Ta-181-doped PbTi1-xHfxO3 compounds
In this work, the hyperfine quadrupole interaction at Ta-doped PbTi1-xHfxO3 polycrystalline samples is studied for the first time. Powders with x=0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) analyses were done as a function of temperature, using low concentration Ta-181 nuclei as probes. In the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases of these compounds two sites were occupied by the probes. For each site the quadrupole frequency, asymmetry and relative distribution width parameters were obtained as a function of temperature above and below the Curie temperature (T-C). One of these sites was assigned to the regular Ti-Hf site, while the other one was assigned to some kind of defect. The behavior of the hyperfine parameters as a function of temperature was analyzed in terms of a recent published phase diagram and the presence of disorder below and above T-C. For the three compositions measured, the obtained hyperfine parameters present discontinuities which correspond to the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. In both phases it was found broad frequency distributed interactions. The disorder in the electronic distribution would be responsible for the broad line width of the hyperfine interaction.
