Weierstrass representations for harmonic morphisms on Euclidean spaces and spheres
We construct large families of harmonic morphisms which are holomorphic with
respect to Hermitian structures by finding heierarchies of Weierstrass-type
representations. This enables us to find new examples of complex-valued

Improved Oxygen Sources for Breathing Apparatus
Research is described which is directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen sources which exhibited improved O2 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(O2)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. the Ca(O2)2 was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(O2)2 syntheis process were studied. The reactivity of Ca(O2)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (CO2) was evaluated and was compared to that of KO2 under flow test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of KO2 and Ca(O2)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, KO2-based, self contained self rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(O2)2 or a mixture of KO2 and Ca(O2)2 were used as a replacement for KO2
Evidence for mass ejection associated with long secondary periods in red giants
Approximately 30% of luminous red giants exhibit a Long Secondary Period
(LSP) of variation in their light curves, in addition to a shorter primary
period of oscillation. The cause of the LSP has so far defied explanation:
leading possibilities are binarity and a nonradial mode of oscillation. Here,
large samples of red giants in the Large Magellanic Cloud both with and without
LSPs are examined for evidence of an 8 or 24 m mid-IR excess caused by
circumstellar dust. It is found that stars with LSPs show a significant mid-IR
excess compared to stars without LSPs. Furthermore, the near-IR - color
seems unaffected by the presence of the 24 m excess. These findings
indicate that LSPs cause mass ejection from red giants and that the lost mass
and circumstellar dust is most likely in either a clumpy or a disk-like
configuration. The underlying cause of the LSP and the mass ejection remains

A Coronal Hole's Effects on CME Shock Morphology in the Inner Heliosphere
We use STEREO imagery to study the morphology of a shock driven by a fast
coronal mass ejection (CME) launched from the Sun on 2011 March 7. The source
region of the CME is located just to the east of a coronal hole. The CME ejecta
is deflected away from the hole, in contrast with the shock, which readily
expands into the fast outflow from the coronal hole. The result is a CME with
ejecta not well centered within the shock surrounding it. The shock shape
inferred from the imaging is compared with in situ data at 1 AU, where the
shock is observed near Earth by the Wind spacecraft, and at STEREO-A. Shock
normals computed from the in situ data are consistent with the shock morphology

From Beads on a String to the Pearls of Regulation: the Structure and Dynamics of Chromatin
The assembly of eukaryotic chromatin, and the bearing of its structural organization on the regulation of gene expression, were the central topics of a recent conference organized jointly by the Biochemical Society and Wellcome Trust. A range of talks and poster presentations covered topical aspects of this research field and illuminated recent advances in our understanding of the structure and function of chromatin. The two-day meeting had stimulating presentations complemented with lively discourse and interactions of participants. In the present paper, we summarize the topics presented at the meeting, in particular highlighting subjects that are reviewed in more detail within this issue of Biochemical Society Transactions. The reports bring to life the truly fascinating molecular and structural biology of chromatin
Using high resolution displays for high resolution cardiac data
The ability to perform fast, accurate, high resolution visualization is fundamental
to improving our understanding of anatomical data. As the volumes of data
increase from improvements in scanning technology, the methods applied to rendering
and visualization must evolve. In this paper we address the interactive display of
data from high resolution MRI scanning of a rabbit heart and subsequent histological
imaging. We describe a visualization environment involving a tiled LCD panel
display wall and associated software which provide an interactive and intuitive user
interface.
The oView software is an OpenGL application which is written for the VRJuggler
environment. This environment abstracts displays and devices away from the
application itself, aiding portability between different systems, from desktop PCs to
multi-tiled display walls. Portability between display walls has been demonstrated
through its use on walls at both Leeds and Oxford Universities. We discuss important
factors to be considered for interactive 2D display of large 3D datasets,
including the use of intuitive input devices and level of detail aspects
Biomechanical comparison of the track start and the modified one-handed track start in competitive swimming: an intervention study
This study compared the conventional track and a new one-handed track start in elite age group swimmers to determine if the new technique had biomechanical implications on dive performance. Five male and seven female GB national qualifiers participated (mean ± SD:
age 16.7 ± 1.9 years, stretched stature 1.76 ± 0.8 m, body mass 67.4 ± 7.9 kg) and were assigned to a control group (n = 6) or an intervention group (n = 6) that learned the new onehanded dive technique. All swimmers underwent a 4-week intervention comprising 12 ± 3 thirty-minute training sessions. Video cameras synchronized with an audible signal and timing suite captured temporal and kinematic data. A
portable force plate and load cell handrail mounted to a swim starting block collected force data over 3 trials of each technique. A MANCOVA identified Block Time (BT),
Flight Time (FT), Peak Horizontal Force of the lower limbs (PHF) and Horizontal Velocity at Take-off (Vx) as covariates. During the 10-m swim trial, significant differences were found in Time to 10 m (TT10m), Total Time (TT), Peak Vertical Force (PVF), Flight Distance (FD), and Horizontal Velocity at Take-off (Vx) (p < .05). Results indicated that the conventional track start method was faster over 10 m, and therefore may be seen as a superior start after a short intervention. During training, swimmers and coaches should focus on the most statistically significant dive performance variables: peak horizontal force and velocity at take-off, block and flight time
