Imaging the Space-Time Evolution of High Energy Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions with Bremsstrahlung

    Get PDF
The bremsstrahlung produced when heavy nuclei collide is estimated for central collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Bremsstrahlung photons with energies below 100 to 200 MeV are sufficient to discern the gross features of the space-time evolution of electric charge, if they can be separated from other sources of photons experimentally. This is illustrated explicitly by considering two very different models, one Bjorken-like, the other Landau-like, both of which are constructed to give the same final charge rapidity distribution.Comment: 9 pages revtex style, 9 embedded PS figure

Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. An integrated analog tuner for Open-Cable applications is designed in a standard 0.18-μm CMOS process using single-conversion architecture. The tuner integrates a whole signal path including a wide-band low-noise amplifier, a novel image-rejection mixer, and a fully-integrated integer-N frequency synthesizer with a wide-band ring VCO. At 1.8-V supply and over the whole input frequency range from 54 MHz to 880 MHz, the tuner measures image rejection of 63-dB, maximum noise figure of 8.5-dB, IIP2 of 80.9 dBmV and IIP 3 of 55.8 dBmV corresponding to CTB of -53.8 dBc and CSO of -54.3 dBc. The tuner dissipates a total of 531 mW while occupying a chip area of 5.4 mm2. © 2005 IEEE

Dynamic breakage and fragmentation of brittle single particles of various sizes and strength

Breakage, comminutioa, crushing and fragmentation of brittle solids under dynamic impacts are an important applied mechanics and rock mechanics problem. In civil engineering applications,impact-induced-fragmentation relates to crushing of rock mass during mining process, tunneling, and aggregate production. The main objective of this paper is to outline some of our recent experimental, analytical and numerical efforts in studying the dynamic fragmentation process in brittle particle.First,an analytical solution of a solid sphere compressod dynamically between two rigid flat platens is derived analytically.Secondly,a sequence of double impact tests on spheres were conducted using an impactor Dynatup 8250 at HKUST,with both impact velocity and contact force at the impactor measured accurately. Finally,a newly developed computer program,DIFAR,is used to investigate the mechanism of dynamic fragmentation. The paper will summarize and discuss briefly all three aspects of our comprehensive approach.Department of Civil and Environmental Engineerin
