    Aberration measurement using in-situ two-beam interferometry

    A reticle with phase-only blazed gratings ofvaiying azimuthal orientations diffracts light into only two orders, 0 & +1, discretely illuminating a lens pupil. The image ofeach grating is a sinusoidal interference pattern and is recorded as a surface relief in a highly absorbing photoresist. The maximum image contrast occurs when focus is set such that the RMS wavefront error over the two beams is minimized. This maximum contrast vs focus is recorded by a CCD array mounted on a dark-field optical microscope and the aberrations are obtained from an analysis of this record. Repeatability of equivalent primary aberrations ofless than O.OO17RMS are achieved and used to monitor lens stability.published_or_final_versio

    Fidelity of SNP array genotyping using Epstein Barr virus-transformed B-lymphocyte cell lines: Implications for genome-wide association studies

    Background: As availability of primary cells can be limited for genetic studies of human disease, lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL) are common sources of genomic DNA. LCL are created in a transformation process that entails in vitro infection of human B-lymphocytes with the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). Methodology/Principal Findings: To test for genotypic errors potentially induced by the Epstein-Barr Virus transformation process, we compared single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype calls in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and LCL from the same individuals. The average mismatch rate across 19 comparisons was 0.12% for SNPs with a population call rate of at least 95%, and 0.03% at SNPs with a call rate of at least 99%. Mismatch rates were not correlated across genotype subarrays run on all sample pairs. Conclusions/Significance: Genotypic discrepancies found in PBMC and LCL pairs were not significantly different than control pairs, and were not correlated across subarrays. These results suggest that mismatch rates are minimal with stringent quality control, and that most genotypic discrepancies are due to technical artifacts rather than the EBV transformation process. Thus, LCL likely constitute a reliable DNA source for host genotype analysis. © 2009 Herbeck et al

    Review article: Mycobacterium marinum infection of the hand and wrist.

    Misdiagnosis and delayed treatment of Mycobacterium marinum infection is common because of its diverse manifestations. This leads to inappropriate use of antimicrobials, extension of the infection from the skin to the tenosynovium, and a poor prognosis (loss of tendons and prolonged immobilisation, secondary to multiple debridements and joint contractures). Clinicians should be aware of this type of infection, especially in subjects at risk (fishermen and aquarium enthusiasts), and those with a history of trauma coupled with exposure to water or marine life. A proactive approach to obtain a biopsy for histopathological and microbiological diagnosis is advised. Anti-mycobacterial treatment should be started promptly. The combined use of rifampicin, ethambutol, and clarithromycin appears to be effective, and debridement is indicated in patients with deep-seated infections.published_or_final_versio

    Correlation between hot-carrier-induced interface states and GIDL current increase in N-MOSFET's

    Correlation between created interface states and GIDL current increase in n-MOSFET's during hot-carrier stress is quantitatively discussed. A trap-assisted two-step tunneling model is used to relate the increased interface-state density (ADH) with the shift in GIDL current (ΔI d). Results show that under appropriate drain-gate biases, the two-step tunneling is so dominant that A/d is insensitive to temperatures up to about 50 °C. With the help of 2-D device simulation, the locations of the drain region with significant two-step tunneling and the energy levels of the traps involved can be found, with both depending on the drain voltage. From these insights on ADit,A/d and their relation, A Du near the midgap can be estimated, with an error less than 10% as compared to the results of chargepumping measurement on the same transistors. Devices with nitrided gate oxide, different gate-oxide thicknesses and different channel dimensions are also tested to verify the above correlation. © 1998 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Developments in the fluidised bed process for fibre recovery from thermoset composites

    Carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is being used in increasing quantities particularly in the transport industry to reduce carbon emissions through weight reduction and in the energy industries for renewable technologies, such as wind turbines. As a high value and energy intensive material to manufacture a good case can be made for recovering and reusing carbon fibre from waste material. A number of companies in Europe and the USA are now in the early stages of commercial operation, but the focus is upon the recycling of clean, uncontaminated scrap from manufacturing processes and it is recognised that CFRP that is mixed with other materials eg. sandwich panels, metal inserts, painted surfaces and composites made from toughened polymers are more difficult to recycle effectively with existing commercial processes. The fluidised bed process developed at the University of Nottingham for recovering carbon fibre from waste composite material has the potential to process mixed and contaminated CFRP waste. The oxidising conditions allow full removal of any organic materials and the fluidised bed effectively separates the carbon fibres from other incombustible materials, such as metals. The process has now been developed to a scale representative of commercial operation and a waste CFRP comprising intermediate modulus carbon fibre and toughened epoxy resin has been processed successfully and good quality recycled fibres recovered. This paper will present the results and discuss the quality of the carbon fibre recovered from the process. A discussion of some of the key requirements to build a viable fluidised bed plant will also be presented

    Weight-for-Height, Body Fat, and Development in Children in the East Asia and Pacific Region

    Importance: Weight-for-height z score (WHZ) is a standard indicator of children’s nutritional status even though it does not fully reflect body fat. Objective: To examine the combined association of WHZ and body fat with early development in the East Asia and Pacific region. Design, Setting, and Participants: Children from the East Asia–Pacific Early Child Development Scales validation study, with full data available regarding their nutritional status and outcomes, were included in this cross-sectional analysis. In brief, a multilevel stratified random sampling was used to select representative samples from each participating country in the study. WHZ and body fat were independently trichotomized using established references and were combined to form a 9-category exposure variable. Data collection was performed between 2012 and 2014, and the analyses were conducted in June 2021. Main Outcomes and Measures: The binary outcome variable of not being developmentally on track (hereafter referred to as poor development) was defined as a score less than the 25th percentile in the following domains: cognitive, language, socioemotional, motor development, and total development score. Poisson regression models were used to analyze the associations between the combined categories and poor development, adjusted for sociodemographic factors. Results: A total of 6815 children (mean [SD] age, 4.02 [0.8] years; 3434 girls [50.4%]) had full data available and were included in this study. Compared with children with normal weight and normal fat, those with wasting and low body fat had the highest likelihood of total poor development (prevalence ratio, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.28-1.70), followed by those with normal weight but low fat (prevalence ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.11-1.36). Similar associations were found in language, cognitive, and socioemotional development, but not in motor development. Conclusions and Relevance: Poor development was more commonly found in children with low body fat independent of WHZ (wasted or normal weight). Early public health strategies may consider using a combination of WHZ and body fat as an indicator of poor development
