    Screening for acquired cystic kidney disease: A decision analytic perspective. Acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) increases the risk of renal malignancy, and many authors suggest routine screening of dialysis patients for ACKD and renal tumors. However, they have defined neither the target population, the optimal screening strategy, the magnitude of its benefit, nor its risk. We used decision analysis to evaluate strategies of performing either computed tomography (CT) or ultrasound every three years on all dialysis patients and annually on patients found to have cysts. We compared these strategies to a strategy of seeking cysts and cancer only if these are clinically suspected. The baseline analysis shows that both CT and ultrasound may decrease cancer deaths by half for patients with a life expectancy of 25 years. Screening for ACKD offers these patients as much as a 1.6 year gain in life expectancy. However, for the majority of patients beginning renal replacement therapy, age or comorbid disease substantially limits life expectancy. For such patients, the gain in life expectancy from an ACKD screening program is measured in days. Sensitivity analyses show that the benefit of screening depends on the rate of malignant transformation, which needs better definition. The gain in life expectancy does not appear to be large enough to justify an ACKD screening program for the entire ESRD population. However, for the youngest and healthiest patients, a screening program would be of benefit. The magnitude of this benefit is uncertain, because the analysis was consistently biased in favor of the screening strategies

    Catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) functional haplotype is associated with recurrence of affective symptoms: A prospective birth cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) polymorphisms play an essential role in dopamine availability in the brain. However, there has been no study investigating whether a functional four-SNP (rs6269-rs4633-rs4818-rs4680) haplotype is associated with affective symptoms over the life course. METHODS: We tested this using 2093 members of the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development (MRC NSHD), who had been followed up since birth in 1946, and had data for COMT genotypes, adolescent emotional problems (age 13-15) and at least one measure of adult affective symptoms at ages 36, 43, 53, or 60-64 years. First, differences in the levels of affective symptoms by the functional haplotype using SNPs rs6269, rs4818, and rs4680 were tested in a structural equation model framework. Second, interactions between affective symptoms by COMT haplotype were tested under an additive model. Finally, a quadratic regressor (haplotype2) was used in a curvilinear model, to test for a possible inverted-U trend in affective symptoms according to COMT-related dopamine availability. RESULTS: Women had a significant interaction between COMT haplotypes and adolescent emotional problem on affective symptoms at age 53. Post hoc analysis showed a significant positive association between adolescent emotional problems and affective symptoms at age 53 years in the middle dopamine availability group (valA/valB or met/met; β = .11, p = .007). For men, no significant interactions were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Combination of the COMT functional haplotype model and inverted-U model may shed light on the effect of dopaminergic regulation on the trajectory of affective symptoms over the life course

    Social context mediates the expression of a personality trait in a gregarious lizard

    The social environment is a key factor that influences behavioural traits across a wide array of species. Yet, when investigating individual differences in behaviour, studies tend to measure animals in isolation from other conspecifics-even in social species. Surprisingly, whether behavioural traits measured in isolation are predictive of individual-level behaviour when in social groups is still poorly understood. Here, we repeatedly measured risk-taking behaviour (i.e. boldness; 741 total trials) in both the presence and absence of conspecifics in a social lizard, the delicate skink (Lampropholis delicata). Further, we manipulated food availability during group trials to test whether the effect of the social environment on risk-taking behaviour was mediated by competition over resources. Using 105 lizards collected from three independent populations, we found that individual risk-taking behaviour was repeatable when measured in either social isolation or within groups both with and without food resources available. However, lizards that were bolder during individual trials were not also bolder when in groups, regardless of resource availability. This was largely driven by individual differences in social behavioural plasticity, whereby individual skinks responded differently to the presence of conspecifics. Together, this resulted in a rank order change of individual behavioural types across the social conditions. Our results highlight the importance of the social environment in mediating animal personality traits across varying levels of resource availability. Further, these findings suggest that behavioural traits when measured in isolation, may not reflect individual variation in behaviour when measured in more ecologically realistic social groups

    3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum Spitzer{\it Spitzer} Phase Curves of the Highly-Irradiated Hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b

    We analyze full-orbit phase curve observations of the transiting hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b at 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope. For WASP-19b, we measure secondary eclipse depths of 0.485%±0.024%0.485\%\pm 0.024\% and 0.584%±0.029%0.584\%\pm 0.029\% at 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum, which are consistent with a single blackbody with effective temperature 2372±602372 \pm 60 K. The measured 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum secondary eclipse depths for HAT-P-7b are 0.156%±0.009%0.156\%\pm 0.009\% and 0.190%±0.006%0.190\%\pm 0.006\%, which are well-described by a single blackbody with effective temperature 2667±572667\pm 57 K. Comparing the phase curves to the predictions of one-dimensional and three-dimensional atmospheric models, we find that WASP-19b's dayside emission is consistent with a model atmosphere with no dayside thermal inversion and moderately efficient day-night circulation. We also detect an eastward-shifted hotspot, suggesting the presence of a superrotating equatorial jet. In contrast, HAT-P-7b's dayside emission suggests a dayside thermal inversion and relatively inefficient day-night circulation; no hotspot shift is detected. For both planets, these same models do not agree with the measured nightside emission. The discrepancies in the model-data comparisons for WASP-19b might be explained by high-altitude silicate clouds on the nightside and/or high atmospheric metallicity, while the very low 3.6 μ\mum nightside planetary brightness for HAT-P-7b may be indicative of an enhanced global C/O ratio. We compute Bond albedos of 0 (<0.08<0.08 at 1σ1\sigma) and 0.38±0.060.38\pm 0.06 for WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b, respectively.     CARMA Survey Toward Infrared-bright Nearby Galaxies (STING) II: Molecular Gas Star Formation Law and Depletion Time Across the Blue Sequence

    We present an analysis of the relationship between molecular gas and current star formation rate surface density at sub-kpc and kpc scales in a sample of 14 nearby star-forming galaxies. Measuring the relationship in the bright, high molecular gas surface density (\Shtwo\gtrsim20 \msunpc) regions of the disks to minimize the contribution from diffuse extended emission, we find an approximately linear relation between molecular gas and star formation rate surface density, \nmol\sim0.96\pm0.16, with a molecular gas depletion time \tdep\sim2.30\pm1.32 Gyr. We show that, in the molecular regions of our galaxies there are no clear correlations between \tdep\ and the free-fall and effective Jeans dynamical times throughout the sample. We do not find strong trends in the power-law index of the spatially resolved molecular gas star formation law or the molecular gas depletion time across the range of galactic stellar masses sampled (\mstar ∼\sim109.7−1011.510^{9.7}-10^{11.5} \msun). There is a trend, however, in global measurements that is particularly marked for low mass galaxies. We suggest this trend is probably due to the low surface brightness CO, and it is likely associated with changes in CO-to-H2 conversion factor.Comment: To appear in ApJ, December 2011; 17 pages; 8 figure

    A formal methodology for integral security design and verification of network protocols

    We propose a methodology for verifying security properties of network protocols at design level. It can be separated in two main parts: context and requirements analysis and informal verification; and formal representation and procedural verification. It is an iterative process where the early steps are simpler than the last ones. Therefore, the effort required for detecting flaws is proportional to the complexity of the associated attack. Thus, we avoid wasting valuable resources for simple flaws that can be detected early in the verification process. In order to illustrate the advantages provided by our methodology, we also analyze three real protocols
