Bruno Bauch and the Comprehensibility of Nature

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to discuss how Bruno Bauch deals with the problem of the coordination between empirical concepts and spatiotemporal objects. We shall argue that Bauch reformulates the Kantian distinction between concepts and intuitions by means of a philosophical consideration of differential calculus and that he thereby explains the possibility of such coordination, avoiding certain difficulties of the Kantian doctrine.O propósito deste trabalho é discutir como o neokantismo de Bruno Bauch trabalha o problema da coordenação de conceitos e objetos espaço-temporais. Sustentaremos que Bauch reformula a distinção kantiana de conceitos e intuições mediante uma consideração filosófica do cálculo diferencial e que, assim, explica a possibilidade de tal coordenação, evitando certas dificuldades da doutrina de Kant.Fil: Pringe, Hernan Bruno. Kinematic Segregation of Flowing Grains in Sandpiles

We study the segregation of granular mixtures in two-dimensional silos using a set of coupled equations for surface flows of grains. We study the thick flow regime, where the grains are segregated in the rolling phase. We incorporate this dynamical segregation process, called kinematic sieving, free-surface segregation or percolation, into the theoretical formalism and calculate the profiles of the rolling species and the concentration of grains in the bulk in the steady state. Our solution shows the segregation of the mixture with the large grains being found at the bottom of the pile in qualitative agreement with experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, http://polymer.bu.edu/~hmakse/Home.htm

International trade, migration and investment with horizontal product differentiation and free entry and exit of firms

This paper builds a circular road model of the world with horizontal product differentiation and free entry and exit of firms, to show that freer international trade increases welfare -with ideal variety preferences- through the exploitation of economies of scale and better allocative efficiency, that all participating countries gain from trade, and that smaller countries have more to win from free trade than larger countries. Political resistance to trade liberalization, international migration and foreign direct investment are also analyzed with the model. Finally, the model provides a microfoundation for the use of demand curves with constant and negative slopes.monopolistic competition, horizontal product differentiation, internationaltrade, international migration, foreign direct investment

Conditional limit theorems for regulated fractional Brownian motion

We consider a stationary fluid queue with fractional Brownian motion input. Conditional on the workload at time zero being greater than a large value bb, we provide the limiting distribution for the amount of time that the workload process spends above level bb over the busy cycle straddling the origin, as bb\to\infty. Our results can be interpreted as showing that long delays occur in large clumps of size of order b21/Hb^{2-1/H}. The conditional limit result involves a finer scaling of the queueing process than fluid analysis, thereby departing from previous related literature.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/09-AAP605 the Annals of Applied Probability (http://www.imstat.org/aap/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org
